Also, how fucked up is it that of those main 90's grunge bands, Eddie is the only lead singer left standing right now. I know there were a bunch of bands in that period, but I mean the most commercially successful- Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots. 4/5 lead singers dead. Shit that's not even counting Andy too.

Buying my PJ ticket right now. I don't want to go down a rabbit hole of a discussion but I think everyone's feelings towards depression/suicide is naturally their own defense against it. I just hope you don't at those whom have done it as bad people. I'd also like to clarify that depression and other factors that lead to suicide is absolutely not a "temporary problem"
I'm sure most here have some experience with suicide whether it's old friends or family in some capacity. It really does suck. I agree with the sentiment that it's bullshit and selfish, but I still prefer not to think of the person that way. I completely get why most do though. From what I've read, he suffered from depression as a kid and started using at a pretty early age. There's just something about his death that makes my stomach turn moreso than some of the other artists that have passed over the years.
It's crazy, me and esteban were literally just talking about him in here 2 days ago when I brought up his status and avatar. Hopefully some of you guys got to hear that voice live because it was incredible. When he came out with Pearl jam at PJ20 in 2011, the first time I heard it, he gave me spine-tingling chills when he started singing. We've all heard his voice but there's something about hearing it live (albeit when it's in good shape and not overworked). Fuckin blows, man.
I had to go up to Baton Rouge yesterday, so I'm way behind on work and was just going to recap some shit in the People Who Died Thread in The Other Tent. But since you mentioned our conversation, I'll just drop it here. Fuck.
Even my oldest two, both of who have seen them (oldest 2011 Voodoo, 2012 Hangout solo and 2013 in Austin, TX and then my middle kid in Austin in 2013) were bummed when I told them this morning. I woke up to a series of texts with some friends discussing. It's just fucked up. Keith Emerson, Allan Holdsworth and Chris Cornell all gone in a few months and all 3 of my favorite rockers of all times. Here's my Soundgarden world:
1) 1989 Tipitina's - Soundgarden opened for Voivod. We never even heard of them before. About 10-15 of us went as we were all giant Voivod fans at the time. We had an old Vietnam vet friend with us who hadn't really been to any hard rock shows and apparently thought he was at a punk show like the Sex Pistols and proceeded to flip off the band as often as possible. Cornell was originally questioning it, but when we assured him to ignore him, he laughed and just joined in. My witch friend Carridwin (sp?) remarked that she "licked his sweat" that night. Haha. Everyone who went became instant fans, and the Bacchus bar installed Ultramega OK into the juke box and also Louder than Love. People would blast Big Dumb Sex on that jukebox nightly. \m/
2) 1992 Lollapolooza - This was the infamous show that was apparently over 110 degrees in the pit. Day was like 98 and scorching. I got buried under over 100 people when I got tripped slam dancing and the pile fell on top of me and then people started dog piling on. No sooner than I had gotten up and was tripped again but this time only about 20-25 people were on top. I'll never forget the automatic thought that came to my head not to panic because if I did, I would have probably died on the spot. The cover of Ice T's "Cop Killer" was ballsy, and there were probably 20 cops off to the side standing there smugly and not happy. I thought they would either crack heads or shut it down. But they luckily didn't do ****.
3) 1994 UNO Arena (Down on the Upside tour) - They broke up later that year (or 95). Show was awesome except I was slamming and got pushed into some d-bag who threatened to punch me. I should have clocked him, but I'd been through all that crapola 10 years earlier while metal heads were integrating into the hardcore scene. Fuck that guy. I hope he got taken out later and his stupid fucking girlfriend as well. Moral of the story asshole, if you're on the rail and dozens of people are moshing, you might want to move.
4) 2011 Voodoo Festival Reunion Tour - This was great. Weather was terrible as the first cold front of the year had passed through. Winds were like 35-40mph, and it felt fucking cold. Cornell tells the story about how this is the first time he's played New Orleans not on a complete black-out and loves the city. He tells the story about how after getting stopped and seized of all their money out in Lake Charles by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office, they made it to Tipitina's for that aforementioned 1988 show almost out of gas. But that was show was so fucking rowdy and the first time apparently they got that kind of response from an audience (which was me and all my friends primarily) that's when they knew they were doing what they were supposed to be doing.
5) Hangout 2012 - Damn. As zaj and I were discussing earlier in the week, a blasting ray of sunshine coming through the stage rigging hit me during Sweet Sunshower. Then my hot Dos Equis 16 oz can of beer explodes out the open top during an alcohol reference. Show blew me away and will always be my Top 1 [tm] Hangout show. I made it to Gravity A after that set and that's pretty much what I remember from my first day of Hangout fest. It's disgusting that so many people at the show are talking on the YouTube videos of it, because my experience was more that people were just singing along or in awe where we were standing.
6) Austin 2013 - Went with both of my oldest kids and a bunch of our friends double fisting and partying it down. Show was excellent, and my friend Brad said it's all time Top 10 for him.
My middle kid just texted me that they finished the incredible show in Detroit with Led Zeppelin's In My Time of Dying. FUCKKKKKKKKKK
Anyway, I'm pretty much numb at this point. This is a guy I came up with who is about my age and whom I've admired since he was single-handedly the most responsible person for destroying hairspray metal and stupid glam fashion.
And with all due apologies to everyone else who also probably don't like their pictures splattered all over the f'n web, here's me, a couple of my kids, Jabco and some of our friends at the Austin show in 2013. I have the DxRxIx shirt on. We were double fisting as is usually the case when in Austin, Texas and certainly while at a Soundgarden show.
I couldn't find any Inforoo Ocean reefers up this morning on the way back from the beach walk. When are you due in krisplettuce and JUICY JAY? Who else closely on the west side besides me, Sarah, Chickinchickasaw, and Ocean reefers? The weather is awesome right now. A little windy, but fabulous sun on the sand.
Cooked me up some shrimp and grits for lunch...yummy
Austin Music Hall. It was fucking great. So my daughter calls me up a little in tears over not getting to see Soundgarden. She wanted to stop in on the Houston show next Thursday on the way to Austin except she had to work. She was highly upset for not ever being able to see them. I guess that's what happens when you learn Badmotorfinger and Superunknown from your car seat. She's EDM generation (will be 21 next week), but she loves Soundgarden and old Van Halen. Haha. Raised right. \m/
1989 and 1992 don't have any songs though I can vouch that 1989 was Louder than Love tour, and 1992 did Cop Killer and much of Bad Motorfinger
July 25, 1994 - Jesus Christ Pose, Spoonman, Let Me Drown, Mailman, The Day I Tried to Live, My Wave, Room 1,000 Years Wide, Black Hole Sun, Searching with My Good Eye Closed; Superunknown; Rusty Cage, Half, Mind Riot, Fell on Black Days, Drawing Files, Ugly Truth, Slaves & Bulldozers, Kickstand, Face Pollution, Like Suicide, Head Down. Some douchebag hit the bass player with a beer and he stormed off stage. People wanted more and Cornell came out and told the crowd if they want to hear some more, tell people not to throw shit at the bass player.
October 28, 2011 - Searching with My Good Eye Closed, Spoonman, Let Me Drown, Jesus Christ Pose, Gun (with Pepper Keenan of C.O.C.), Blow Up the Outside World, Loud Love, Ugly Truth, My Wave, The Day I Tried to Live, Pretty Noose, Black Hole Sun, Outshined, Rusty Cage, Room 1000 Years Wide; Drawing Flies, Hunted Down, Fell on Black Days; Superunknown; 4th of July; Beyond the Wheel; Slaves and Bulldozers
May 18, 2012 - What's SO Funny 'bout Peace, Love and Understanding (Brinsley Schwarz cover); All Night Thing (TotD), Sunshower, Wide Awake (Audioslave), Hunger Strike (TotD), Ground Zero, I Am the Highway (Audioslave), Fell on Black Days (SG), When I'm Down, Wooden Jesus (TotD), Like a Stone (Audioslave), Doesn't Remind Me (Audioslave), Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden), Imagine (John Lennon Cover)
May 25, 2013 - Searching with My Good Eye Closed, Jesus Christ Pose, Hands All Over, Rhinosaur, Spoonman, My Wave, Worse Dreams, The Day I Tried to Live, Mailman, A Thousand Days Before, Pretty Noose, Burden In My Hand, Never the Machine Forever (first time played since 1996), Flower, Outshined, Taree, Hunted Down, Drawing Flies, Blow Up the Outside World, Fell on Black Days, Incessant Mace; New Damage ( \\m// ), Rusty Cage

esteban, thanks for the recaps of the great shows. Nice pics there. Hope to meet you sometime.
For sure man. Hit me up if you end up doing Voodoo or Day for Night. Those are the only 2 I'm for sure going to but might hit ACL depending on Voodoo's lineup crossovers.
Last post on this for me, but according to CNN, Soundgarden did indeed finish the show with a cover of In My Time of Dying.
(CNN) — In my time of dying, I want nobody to mourn
All I want for you to do is take my body home
Those are the opening lines to the last song Chris Cornell ever sang on stage. It was a cover of Led Zeppelin's "In My Time of Dying."
Cornell and his band Soundgarden have covered the song before and they did it again to close out the show at Detroit's Fox Theater on Wednesday. Just hours later, Cornell was found dead. He was 52.
"Honestly something looked off last night with him," concert attendee Joey Mugan told CNN. "I just didn't think about it because the show was great."
Mugan managed to grab the set list from the front of the stage. On it, the encore performance is different than what was actually played, which isn't that unusual for a live rock show.
The next morning, when he learned Cornell was dead, Mugan said it was hard to believe he had seen him perform less than 12 hours before.
i get more jealous by the hour. there is a fucking klan rally in the same city (lancaster,PA) im gonna be in for this wedding saturday. as if missing this wasnt bad enough lol
Zaj, your corner unit is just over my left shoulder...pimpin pad.
Man I miss those days of lighting that place up like a god damn Christmas tree. We don't go that all out anymore but that year was one for the books for sure.
I'm here. Can't wait until tomorrow. Wish I could join you pool party. Still waiting for others to show up at the condo. Hope to see some of you tomorrow.

Had a great time playing with jdstultz, @brewdude, and everybody at the pool. Thanks to @sparysarah and chickinchickasaw for a fun pre party kick off. Wasted on Apple shine and copious amounts of beer. A lot of lurkers joined us. Good night.
