I'm going to be at a career fair put on by the Bulls January 4. 20 sports and sports-adjacent orgs will be there (think White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks, Bucks et al.). Stadium, Reinsdorf's new TV channel, will be there as well.
What do I do? This is my first career fair.
Curious: what would you like to do for a sports team? Writing for the team website? PR?
Are you using Teamwork Online to look for jobs in sports?

The nebuluous term that is "content creation." A lot of what I've done is in multimedia, so I have a working knowledge of video, audio, social media, etc.
I've never heard of that site, but looking at it it seems useful.

You should absolutely use TWOL if you are interested in sports. I hire almost all of my interns from there, and it is what most teams use for filling entry-level positions. You only fill out your info once, then it is like 4 clicks to apply to each new position. I used to bang out like 10 applications a day when I was nearing graduation. It is actually how I got my start with the Jaguars as an intern as well.
Content creation would be so fucking fun for a sports team. The only downside is that many teams would force you to take the company line regarding any negative news surrounding the franchise.
Hi everyone! If anyone has any connections to any talent agencies or festivals that are looking for summer interns I would greatly appreciate if you could DM me! Preferably if they are looking for something along the lines of talent buying but I am very flexible and can excel wherever they see fit.
is it relevant to the skills/tasks required to do the job you want?
Probably? I edited and wrote for a sports site in addition to running the social media.
it's a little tough to say for sure, without knowing your whole background and what type of job you're looking for.
Are you a professional with a degree looking for a job, are you in college looking for an internship, are you looking to just fill the page on your resume?

Last semester of college, looking for either an internship or an entry-level job.

Why wouldn't you list it? That's not to say you should, it's to ask why you don't have it.

I probably would. Bonus if you’re looking for something in the comm/pr/etc realm, since it’s relevant experience. I volunteered for the 2013 us open (golf), wasn’t relevant to my field, but put it on my resume. No one specifically asked about the experience, but i figured it may catch the attention of someone if they played golf.
edit- i was looking for entry level, full time jobs in 2015, so similar time gap.
How do you write a cover letter when the company gives you little indication as to what they want the cover letter to be about?
Cover letters should pretty much always be the same, unless they’ve specifically requested something different.
Paragraph 1: About you / your academic background / why you’re interested in this specific role or company.
Paragraph 2: Why you’re the right person for the job / more detailed look at & explanation of your qualifications and experience pertaining to the position / any relevant certifications that you have or are in process of getting
Paragraph 3: Conclusion / reiterate interest and why you’re the one they should hire / express interest in coming in for interview
Sincerely, Name Email Phone #
Happy to send you some examples of cover letters I’ve written in the past if it helps.

Wasn’t sure if this is grrrr thread material or this thread material, but I’m asking for a career advice, so here it goes.
I’ve been with my current company for 2 years and a couple months, everything’s pretty good. Good flexibility, decent benefits, work stays at work, stress is minimal. Based on an outline we got from hr/dept head, the career ladder just so happens to say that after 2 years and x skills/accomplishments you get a promotion from level 2 to level 3. Me, knowing corporate America moves at a glacial pace, was hoping to get ahead of this, so I started talking to my boss about this promotion a month ahead of time(late nov/early dec, anniversary is in Jan). Knowing nothing was going to happen around the holidays, I was anticipating getting the ball rolling some time in Jan.
Come late Jan, after my boss has had a chance to talk to his boss, and his boss’ boss, he tells me he’s had a chance to review everything with everyone and agrees that I deserve a raise/promotion and will start the paperwork. Cool.
I hear nothing for 2 months, expecting things are just moving along hr or whatever the hell they do. Early last week, I hear the director(boss’ boss) will talk to the dept head, but cautioned that nothing might happen because the dept head likes to do these around our review periods, one in early March for our bonus and another in July for our merit increases. If they determine that it has been too long since my last review, they will push it till July.
I’m pretty pissed for a couple reasons, apparently everything was good to go in late Jan, so why was the dept head just heading about it in late March? We also just had a department town hall, and our lowest scoring question from the employee survey was related to career advancement and growth. In my most recent one on one with my boss I voiced my frustrations in the length of the process and the fact that I still don’t even know if I have to wait till July. According to him, he’s in agreement with me that I deserve a raise now, but doesn’t seem to be doing much to advance the process or advocate on my behalf.
This whole process has really put a sour taste in my mouth, and pushed me to start applying to other jobs in different departments or outside opportunities. Any advice or thoughts are much appreciated.

I don't have any sage advice beyond what you already know, but I'm happy to boil in the frustration with you since I went through something similar recently.
Generally speaking, I think good companies do what it takes to keep good employees. That's first. But what's so fucking annoying is that you know these fucks would shape up and accelerate your raise if you cited it as your primary reason for leaving upon giving them a 2 weeks notice.
Fuck Finance and HR departments. Fuck em. I know they have some great functions, but fuck them when it comes to raises. Your boss gets to hide behind the "process." Your boss may legitimately have your back, but he/she isn't as desperate about this as you are. I remember talking to my boss like, "can I please talk to whoever it is responsible directly on my behalf?" The human being(s) responsible for your delay lives somewhere in one of those two departments (Finance and/or HR). They create bullshit "rules" and standards that never seem to work in the favor of the employee when it comes to raises. And they only break their bullshit rules when they are threatened by a good employee possibly leaving.
In my mind, you have to either admit that your job is awesome enough to where you should settle with how they are treating you, or you need to find a new opportunity that you would actually take and give your boss a heads up that you are planning to leave. You can't threaten this without being willing to leave, though. I don't know you. Maybe you aren't a superstar employee and your boss won't really care if you leave. If they decide to say fuggit and let you go without really caring, you have to be willing to leave and also reflect on if you could have done a better job to establish your importance within the company during your time there.
Of course, if you are a stud, they will likely shape up find a loophole in their system to get you what you want "just this once! We don't do this often! Please don't tell others about this!"
There is another option where you actually are a stud, they recognize it, but have their priorities backwards and would be willing to take the hit of you leaving. I imagine that would have to either be a terrible company, or a company that is SO desirable by talented people like Amazon or Google where even though you are a stud, they could just backfill your role with a million other studs. But from my understanding based on having a friend who works for Amazon, those companies treat their employees like Gods anyways because they value their culture more than almost anything else.
I'm just kinda shooting the shit with you here. Don't take anything I said too seriously. I have a pretty solid understanding of how this shit works in the sports business industry, but idk if it would apply to your situation.

Appreciate the response. I’m in the mindset of, I could probably accept and tolerate the way I was treated during this whole process if I had to, but there are other opportunities out there, might as well see what I can get. The dept town hall really opened my eyes to the issues they have with employee growth and advancement, their answer to it was they were mulling having an internal career fair. Which is a complete non answer and doesn’t get to the root of the problem. My outlook if I stayed is one more promotion to senior analyst, and then beyond that, there’s nothing. The last two senior analysts to be promoted to managers have been with the company 11 and 19 years. That alone tells me this isn’t the right place for me long term.
I wouldn’t classify myself as a stud, my reviews are somewhere between meeting and exceeding expectations, and in no way is this an amazon or google. In my mind, my ability to earn a salary is the most important aspect of my working life, and a company that doesn’t respect that isn’t worth my time. And the frustrating thing is, like you said, if I had an offer from someone in hand, I guarantee they’d offer me more money that day.

I think you know the problem, your company works in a particular way when it comes to advancement/pay raises and have become comfortable in that. Employees don't like this process and have voiced their concern. Management doesn't have an immediate response but I'm willing to bet that after hearing about their employees' displeasure they are trying to find a pay to improve the process.
But as you said, things move slowly in your company. In my experience the bigger the company the slower the movement in process changes. I went from working from a large publicly traded corporation (thousands of employees) to a small company (90 employees) a few years back and was shocked and delighted at how much more nimble and responsive to employees' needs my current smaller company is. At the end of every busy season we meet as an entire firm, discuss what went well, what we need to improve, and how to improve it. Within a few months all of our suggestions are implemented for the next busy season. It's kind of nuts how simple it is and how well it works.
Anyway that was a tangent, but for you the right thing to do is (a) be on the lookout for other opportunities but also (b) keep your current relationships at work positive. It's great to voice your concern and suggestions for improvement, just don't be an asshole about it. You want to be known as a positive and helpful team member, not a negative and cranky one. Not saying you are negative and cranky, it doesn't sound like that based on what you've told us, but in the past I've found myself spiraling into negativity, and that isn't good for those around me or me.

3post1jack1 I assumed it was going to take a long time, my main frustration point is that it didn't reach the person it needed to in time to coincide for my march review, when I was told everything was kosher in late Jan. obviously not going to burn any bridges, I still work here and and I want to maintain good standing. the only frustration i've vocalized was that I'd be disappointed if it turns out nothing happens until july, and have done my best to be respectful when nudging my boss for an update.
potentpotables thinkin about asking for a 13 year, 330 million contract and seeing what they say
How do I answer the question "how much do you want to be paid?"
you can get a decent idea by using glassdoor. see if you can find a ballpark range for that level employee for your area in your industry. it's an awkward question, but an important one.

Just to further emphasize this: You can totally fuck yourself forever if you don't come into a company receiving the highest end of what they can offer. I believe it was JKT and I pissing and moaning about the fake rules HR / Finance will hit you with all throughout your progression up the ladder. Your jump into a company is actually when you have the most leverage and you don't have to threaten to shake up your entire life to get a fair raise or promotion.
But yeah IDK Slack is closing in on a job or just filling out an application.

It's in radio, so am I justified in saying I have work experience if I worked at student radio and NPR affiliate stations?
It's literally the first question on the online application.
Why? I have no idea.
Is there an option where you don't have to be specific? If so, I'd go with that. If not, I'd probably go a little under what you actually want just so you aren't eliminated before they even review your shit.
But then when it is time to negotiate, that original number has to go out the window and you need to use Glassdoor and instincts to get to where you want.

Hell yes. Why not? If there is ever a time to be confident, bordering on arrogance...
