I know some of the guys from White Denim are in Leon Bridges' backing band. I never thought we would get both bands.
I read someone say on facebook that the new White Denim tour will have a few different musicians since those guys are still out with Leon. Hoping the new/stand-in guys are just as good.
Thats interesting, do you know who is being replaced? Or whatever the correct word is?

That's tough because White Denim are awesome musicians
I'll go ahead and be the guy to ignore public perception and say that Macklemore is a great artist for Bonnaroo.
I was reluctantly dragged to his show in 2013 and honestly it's a blast. The dude emanates positive energy.
Look, Macklemore was fun in 2013. But his set was also at 2:30pm and followed by Nas and Kendrick Lamar. Tickets were $300 and had Sir Paul McCartney playing for 3+ hours (with Wu Tang before him on Which).
In the span of 3 years I'm expected to plop down $400 for Macklemore (whom has 2 new songs out in that time) to probably play at 9pm on Friday/Saturday? Fuck that noise.
That's a well stated point. To be honest, when I look at this lineup it's quite obviously the weakest lineup I've seen in the 5 years I've gone to Roo. However, I also feel like comparing it to 2013 isn't completely fair, since (IMO) that's the strongest lineup I've been able to go to. I would be surprised if Bonnaroo ever delivers at the level of 2012/2013 again.
My point about Macklemore is that he will be a trendy target for internet vitriol about this lineup in the coming months. And yet, when June rolls around it's likely he'll have a full crowd many of whom will be pleasantly surprised by his show.
Also you have to consider that the alternative to Macklemore/J Cole is probably Drake.
I'm still hung up on how the hell White Denim isn't on the lineup. And Portgual. The Man and Shpongle were supposed to be confirmed from the bands themselves ... It's official, can't trust anyone's scoopz anymore.
I know some of the guys from White Denim are in Leon Bridges' backing band. I never thought we would get both bands.
That could explain WD's tour dates, the guys in Leon Bridges' band go play Roo while the rest of the band gets a day off I suppose.
I'm more confused about Portugal. The Man and Shpongle, though. Those supposedly came from the bands themselves ... so whoever said that either lied, was lied to, or was simply misinformed.
Do yourself a favor and read what I originally said. I said bonnaroo has the most drug use I have seen. That means just my observation. I don't think anyone has exact numbers. All I was saying was that I have personally only been to one festival that I looked around and saw more people getting high. Maybe bonnaroo has the lowest usage, but no from my own personal experience.
Yeah that's a bullshit statement though. Yes, Roo has a drug culture; just as all camping festivals do. But it is no where near as bad as some of the wook fests I have been to. I literally saw people with needles shooting up at Camp Bisco.
I'm sure there are much worse. I guess I just didn't word it right. Just saying that was what I saw. Most festivals I've been too were mostly stuff we all might partake in from time to time. Except wakarusa. I did see a group shooting up there as well. That one isn't even close

Here's specifically what I was told:
Yeah, there will be a new touring guitarist and drummer from Bop English, James Petralli's side project (I'm not familiar) ... so no Austin Jenkins

I'd agree on this point. Bonnaroo today is nowhere near what it was when I started going in 2006. I've been to All Goods, Hookahvilles, Werk Outs, Phish fests and too-many-too-name regional jam-centric fests that have had a much crazier party vibe than the current incarnation of 'roo. When I'm walking around Centeroo now, I hardly see any obvious partying.

The two dudes from White Denim playing with Leon are no longer in WD; the new lineup is confirmed via their facebook page. My guess is that White Denim will be an add for Shaky Knees (which would pretty much eliminate them from playing Roo). They have the dates for SK open, and don't have an Atlanta stop on their tour currently.

Bop English are great but no White Denim and I'm disappointed that Austin and Joshua aren't in the band anymore. It was the four of them and their chemistry and talent that made them what they are. But I'll try not to judge too much before I hear the new record and see them. I just don't get why you would enjoy playing backup for the most boring soul musician around rather than being in White Denim.

Leon is everywhere so they are getting fucking PAID. Maybe they have a wife and kids and want to make a solid income?

I don't find the line-up that offensive(Andra Day- a poor persons Adele is somebody worth seeing). Most music fans can find 30 bands to watch over a weekend out of 100+ acts. I always enjoy the fact of getting to know new(to myself) bands. Festivals will continue to become more regional. I think the days of unique acts booked to a farm in Manchester, TN are over. Especially add in the fact that the bottom-line is controlled by a public company, the return has to be there.
Roo will always be an event to attend. Summer camp for teens and adults alike! I live 70 miles away and it is the best grouping of talent near my house. I will always go. For those people that travel 10 plus hours, your days of Roo may be over. Go to other festivals, but just know there is nothing like the sun setting in Manchester on a Friday night knowing that a headliner and a dance filled late night awaits!

Well first off.....I don't know for sure if they are "out" of the band. The person who told me that said it was just "touring guitarist/drummer" so that leads me to believe it may just be temporary. Like maybe those guys worked on the album and just won't be around for the full tour.
Edit: I didn't see Billadelphia's post. Lame
That said....I love Leon Bridges and I can understand why playing backup for him may be a bit of a priority right now. He's getting some huge shows and just played SNL. I'm assuming they are making a bit more money and are getting a hell of an opportunity.
I am really hoping those guys go back to White Denim, though. I haven't gotten to see them as the core group as much as I'd like and they've blown me away the few times I did see them.

Bonnaroo isn't a "regional festival" it's is one of the biggest in the country. If it keeps putting out lineups like the last two years it's days are numbered.

But....people are still going each year? It might not be what we find ideal as a lineup but there are some that keep coming back (or going for the first time).

Is that trend going to continue though? Keeping a crowd with a down year is one thing, but if you start having multiple years in a row it's going to make a difference.

I have to hope that those guys would be allowed back in to White Denim if they wanted to be. I don't know if Billadelphia knows something other than what's been said publicly, which hasn't been much. As a musician, I just know I'd much rather be in a band where I'm fairly integral to the sound, which both of them are, rather than being a replaceable player in Leon Bridge's boring take on soul music.
On that note, if someone could take the time to explain to me what I'm missing with Leon, it would be much appreciated. Of all the soul artists playing today, he is by a huge margin the one that excites me the least. His music and lyrics I find boring boring, he lacks intensity and passion, and he's just ripping off Sam Cooke without a shred of originality. Would much rather see Charles Bradley, Nathaniel Rateliff, Sharon Jones, Anderson East, or any number of better soul artists any day of the week. But clearly I'm in the minority, so I want to know if I'm not picking up on something. Feel free to PM the responses

I totally agree with you, I've seen them a couple times and I kept coming because the electricity that came out of that foursome. In fact, I invited a few friends of mine to their show once because I loved them and they hated bands that "jam alot" and I wanted them to see it from my perspective. The show changed them all and now one of them is writing for CoS as a music enthusiast instead of what he used to be, only into one genre pretty much. Idk, I doubt White Denim will change too much but I liked what I saw before!!!

This is everything that needs to be said. Macklemore is a seriously a god damn joke, the single he put out a couple months back is essentially Thrift Shop v2.0 and it blows just as much. Who is actually into this guy?

How many shows would everyone say they see a year at roo, and by that I mean a majority of the show.
The most I saw was about 24 last year
DMA's, Dej Loaf (walked out on), Raury, Iceage (missed first 15 minutes), The Growlers, Courtney Barnett, Mac Demarco, The Districts, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Dawes (waiting for Kendrick), Alabama Shakes (waiting for Kendrick), Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, SZA, Jamie XX, Gary Clark Jr, Childish Gambino, Slayer, Superjam, Twenty One Pilots (friend made me see em), MO, Freddie Gibbs, Florence & the Machine, and Billy Joel. Last year wasn't as bad as people made it out to be.
Here's my guess at what the poster will look like. I know some of you are going to say you know for a fact that 4-7 is wrong, but this is still what I'm going with. When you see it this way it does look really weak and it looks like there has to be some pretty large adds coming. Last year they added D'Angelo and Kacey Musgraves and I can't remember who else, but I expect more of that.
