Lana > The Weeknd makes a lot of sense as coheadliners, but is she still going to be touring? or does she already have new music coming? it seems like she's been touring nonstop for the last couple years. With the Lorde album just about finished and awaiting release, I'd have to think she's more likely

I think she's working on new stuff. I prefer Lorde by a mile though.

Neither have been on the farm, but I'd definitely prefer Lorde. Saw her right at the end of her touring and it was great. The new album is right up there with the xx for my most anticipated albums.
Also wouldnt RHCP's May date in Louisville knock them out for Roo?
Why would it? In 2012, RHCP played in Louisville 2 days before their Bonnaroo show.
What's giving me pause is the timing of Roo vs the hole in their tour. They're off from May 29-Jun 18, and Roo is right in the middle of that. Maybe they'll play GB-Roo-FF or something like that during that break, but they're already playing every town and hamlet in America, they don't have a lot of options for dates to add around a Roo appearance.

I see something like that being the most likely explanation. If they had more non-festival shows planned during that gap then why not announce them as well?

Both are working on new material I like both a lot, Lana has a much bigger catalog and I think I like her music better, but having seen both, Lorde is definitely the better and more entertaining performer.
For my tastes this is really shaping up to be the most uninteresting group of headliners I've ever seen for a major fest.
would you be excited to see Chance get the headliner slot?
I would, but I don't think that's happening this year. The Weeknd seems like a lock based on tour dates, and I did hear a rumor a couple months ago that Roo was in talks with RHCP, but I'm not sure how much I rely on the source. Given RHCP's tour dates, however, it seems pretty likely, though I think it's really weird to bring them back so soon. They're a little too old for that, in my opinion.
I'm expecting Chance to be #4 or #5. I'd love to see a headlining set by him, but I'd also miss a big chunk of that day's acting waiting for him in the pit line, so I'm a little torn on the idea haha.

gotcha. i wouldn't bet money on it happening either, but i'd be pretty stoked if it did. i think chance would put 110% into that set. way more exciting than a lot of other headliner #3 options.
it would also be awesome to have chance in the j. cole spot.
but the most hilarious outcome would be if bonnaroo manages to not book chance at all in 2017.

Haha that'd be great; I think literally everyone has him on their lineup pool. I'd feel better about skipping this year if he wasn't there, that's for sure.
Come on Launch, you and I both know that "amazing" is an overstatement (especially when compared to the two years prior)
maybe not "amazing", and maybe this is retrofitting, but when you lay out the 2015 undercard artists and look at them, it's easy to say "yeah i could have a great time at that festival". it's mostly made up of artists that were everywhere that year, but still a hell of a lot better than 2016's "bands that play during penny wells night on college street":
furthermore the artists stayed interesting several lines down. you don't even hit flying lotus, EWF, and caribou until line 10.
I actually think they should have bumped chance up. It would at least be kinda interesting and build on the hype he's had with Bonnaroo the last few years.

Oh, I'm not comparing '15 to '16 because 2016 was just abysmal. 2015 was far better than 2016. I'm just saying that we should hold Roo to a higher standard than "Well, it's better than 2016!" I went to 2015 and it was just good enough for me to justify going. But, there are just too many fests these days with great lineups to accept anything sub-par

Sun: De Lux -> Spoon -> Freddie Gibbs & Madlib -> Florence & The Machine -> Billy Joel
Tears vs. Ben Folds was just about the only big conflict for me. Friday was the only really satisfying day for me start to finish. The shows that I went to were great, but I had a lot of down time until the late afternoon each day (except Friday.) Also, that was one arguably the weakest Sunday I have ever seen at Roo. Caribou, Spoon, and Florence were the only shows I went to that day that satisfied and I'm not even a real big fan of Spoon and Florence

agreed it was the weakest sunday of roo. i actually went home sunday morning. the ONLY artist i gave a shit about that day was Caribou, and i preferred to go home and watch TV with my wife rather than wait until Caribou played in the evening.
i know i just said nice things about the 2015 undercard, but i'll also note that 2015 was my personal least favorite bonnaroo experience, mainly due to heavy conflicts in scheduling, coupled with stretches where there weren't artists I was particularly interested in. i had a much better time in 2016, despite the objectively lower quality lineup, due to subjectively good scheduling and significantly smaller crowds.
