I'm happy for Bonnaroo, that's a solid top 3 for the current festival market, and U2 by themselves are going to sell this shit out. The Weeknd is going to be a great, fun set, and if they put together a decent undercard, solid year all around.

In terms of wow factor and sheer draw, U2 may be the biggest among American festivals next year. They've never played an American festival, are huge and aren't as uninspired as say Billy Joel. But, following it up with an act like RHCP just stinks. I can imagine the undercard will take a big hit as well given U2's apparent price tag.
Why? U2 is a great booking. They have never done any stateside festivals (unless you count iheartradio). Thats a huge deal and a big win for Roo. The Weeknd puts on an amazing live show from all that I have heard. RHCP are the shits, but still a massive draw.
That is a very solid top line, if true. I am stoked to see the undercard.

Oh man, preparing myself for 1000x versions of this take over the next few months. Bonnaroo can afford to book U2 and whoever the hell they want as support. If the undercard sucks again it's because they couldn't book a better one or (more likely) couldn't be bothered.

Gonna guess U2 are playing Lollapalooza as well.
I'd wager that U2 also play Lolla and perhaps ACL or whatever. Zero chance Bonnaroo gets some sort of festival exclusive with that one.
Most likely, but it's neat that Bonnaroo was able to land a huge band's first-ever American festival gig.
I still much prefer the purported Coachella headliners.
Man it must be hard having such a refined taste in music that you can only find 1 artist you care to see in an entire day of a major music festival.
That always blows my mind. I've never been to a festival where I can't find a full day worth of stuff I want to see and even some conflicts.
to defend myself, i don't consider my taste in music refined.
I believe phish is the best live band of all time. I believe bassnectar is actually pretty incredible and deserving of the praise his fanbase gives him. I believe The Fall is one of the most underrated acts of all time. I believe gene and dean ween are one of the best songwriting duos of all time. I am fascinated by Future. I could listen to "Steamin' With the Miles Davis Quintet" on repeat and never get tired of it. I still love american dubstep. I believe Beethoven's symphonies (any of them, but specifically 1, 3, and 9) are some of the most fun music ever written but I can't for the life of me understand anything composed by Mahler. i find it hard to breathe whenever I listen to Notorious B.I.G.'s "Things Done Changed". I didn't understand what the big deal about Tame Impala was until "Currents", which i consider far and away their best record. I own all of phil collins' solo albums and am intimately familiar with all of them. I think David Allen Coe's "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" is a really, really, really great song.
My taste in music is an unreasonable hot mess, and no one should use it as a barometer for anything.

U2 is literally a "Once in a Lifetime" type act imo. Why wouldn't you be excited for something like that? Sure the Peppers are a flaming pile of garbage but HEY, THE VIBES! RHCP = Sandwich time. You can't go a year without some headliner/sandwich time slot.
You've been the one singing U2's praises around here.
Oh, I'd 100% be happy with U2 as a headliner at a festival. The other two, not so much.
I don't know that I've ever actually gone to a festival due to a headliner, anyway. Even if the top three was pretty perfect, I'd need to see a good undercard.

You really think so? I'd imagine U2 is one of the most expensive bands in the world.

Maybe, but prohibitively more expensive than McCartney or any of the other big name number ones they've had? Nah. U2's additional cost as a percentage of the total talent budget isn't anything Bonnaroo couldn't absorb.

Given RHCP and The Weeknd's likely high price tags, I would guess this year's lineup turns out like Lolla 2015's lineup with some big top names and a very safe, generic undercard.

U2 would be incredible. Yeah, their most recent stuff hasn't been great, but they have loads of classics and their stage show is second to none. I'd be very happy with them closing the fest
RHCP is alright, I've enjoyed them since I was young but Josh is a shitty guitarist having seen them with him twice (the last time being Lolla this year). I don't need to see another greatest hits set from them
The Weeknd would rule, he's one of my favorite current artists and he puts on an awesome show.
Imo headliner-wise it's better than the past two years, I'd just hope they can put together a strong undercard
Could someone provide a realistic top 10 with those headliners that would be as bad/worse than this years? To me the options in play for the 4-10 spots don't leave much room for across-the-board mediocrity.

I enjoy some of these bands but none of this would particularly excite me aside from Chance.
