someone made a thread like this last year & it was a lot of fun & sparked a lot of good guitar discussions so i'll start this years thread. if i left someone out leave a post & i'll add em EDIT: apparently the system has changed & i cannot edit the poll. i think i've got everyone important but if someone comes up that absolutely rocks the vote i'll figure something out.
the contenders with associated act & a brief description:
Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) - hate him or love him, the influence of this guy is hard to deny. the lead player & guitar talent of pj.
Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam) - the unsung hero of pj. more of a songwriter & wrote most of ten & most of the pj riffs. tenacious rhythm geetar player.
John Mayer (Dead & Company) - you know who he is. every female you know wants to fuck him & gets wet from the mere thought of him. he's the epitome of a white person. he's extraordinary at guitar & has a major impact on guitar player ranging from professionals to frat boys who only know how to play wonderwall. he's also a d-bag. also that awesome chappelle show sketch
Tyler Pope Al Doyle (in place of Tyler Pope) (LCD Soundsystem) - i'm a massive lcd fan & i think the guitar parts are the most underrated parts of lcd. great shit. all my friends, movement, daft punk is playing at my house, never as tired as when i'm waking up are some songs that first come to mind.
Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) - tame impala is one of the best psychedelic rock bands currently (pun intended) & his guitar parts compliment that label very well.
Danielle Haim (HAIM) - main songwriter of haim. has caught the attention of julian casablancas, jenny lewis, & ceelo. haim might be really power poppy but this chick can shred.
Dean Ween/Mickey Melchiondo (Ween) - extremely versatile & his style ranges from everything... for christ sakes he's the guitarist of ween!!! hail boognish.
Jason Isbell (self) - used to be in drive-by truckers. country. singer-songwriter.
Chris Stapleton (self) - county/bluegrass singer-writer.
Grace Potter (self) - blues pop-rock guitarist. main brain of grace potter & the nocturnals.
Mark Morton (Lamb of God) - metal guitarist so he can shred
Willie Adler (Lamb of God) - metal guitarist so he can shred
Kurt Vile (Kurt Vile & the Violators) - guitar prodigy. used to be in the war on drugs. music can be called lo-fi/psychedelic/indie & many other labels. awesome stuff if you haven't checked it out.
Tim Sult (Clutch) - another metal guitarist (that doesn't shred) in the stoner-metal outfit clutch.
Eric Krasno (Lettuce) - guitarist for jazz-funk jam band lettuce
Adam Smirnoff (Lettuce) - guitarist for jazz-funk jam band lettuce
Zac Carper (FIDLAR) - punk guitarist so not necessarily a technically great guitarist but a great punk player nonetheless.
Elvis Kuehn (FIDLAR) - punk guitarist so not necessarily a technically great guitarist but a great punk player nonetheless.
Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers) - the folk guitar playing half of the wood brothers
Steve Gunn (self) - incredible singer-songwriter.
Cadien Lake James (Twin Peaks) - loud garage rock player/vocalist of the raucous twin peaks
Clay Frankel (Twin Peaks) - loud garage rock player of the raucous twin peaks
Alicia Bognanno (Bully) - guitarist/singer-songwriter of the pixies/pavement/sonic youth/nirvana channeling alt rock group bully. was also an audio engineer for steve albini before forming bully.
John Mayer (Dead & Company) - you know who he is. every female you know wants to fuck him & gets wet from the mere thought of him. he's the epitome of a white person. he's extraordinary at guitar & has a major impact on guitar player ranging from professionals to frat boys who only know how to play wonderwallyour body is a wonderland. he's also a d-bag. also that awesome chappelle show sketch

Fixed that. I voted Krasno. Also, Bob Weir is going to be pissed.
i'll throw him in, but we all know that jerry was what the dead was known for re:guitar playing & mayer is filling his spot.
EDIT: apparently we can't edit polls anymore. sorry bobby.
I can understand why some people dislike John Mayer and his pop tunes, but this isn't even a question. Dude shreds and no one on the farm (that I'm currentlty aware of) touches his technical ability

he's the john scofield of last year. yes gary clark jr. is impeccable, but it's hard to deny the technical ability of sco.

K. Just so we're clear: Stone Gossard has written most of the PJ hits, including the iconic lick from Alive (may want to fix initial writeup). But as a lead guitar player, Mike McCready is going to blow every away in June.

thanks for the heads up. fixed the writeups accordingly.

It's hard to argue against John Mayer but I'd go with McCready who has been playing longer than Mayer has been alive. McCready is a bad ass that will get into the crowd and shred. Mayer just sits there making his O face!
May Tycho May Phoenix June Rooo July MMJ and Margo Price August Queen with Adam Lambert August Roger Waters (Bucket list #1) August Spoon and Portugal the man Sept Depeche Mode Sept Pilgrimage Fest

McCready is a better guitarist because he is older and walks off stage sometimes? He's incredibly talented but his fake Hendrix doesn't come anywhere near Mayer's fake Hendrix/SRV...
Edit: more importantly, we NEED a Hendrix themed superjam this year. We have the talent available on the farm!

I went with Dean Ween because I'm biased
John Mayer is also excellent but his style is more traditional bluesy. Deaner has a uniquely recognizable sound along with technical ability, and that makes him better in my book

I know it's hard to include everyone, and not being able to edit the list sucks, but this kid can play, too... He's not the best, but he could make this list.

Isn't everyone emulating someone at this point!!! Win Butler wants to be David Bowie, black R&B artists want to be like Prince, rappers wanna be like Tupac, Biggie, or Jay-z. Originality is difficult to find any more. You are right, I gave a terrible answer.

Awesome good thread! Can't wait to hear as many of these musicians as possible. Have not seen or, more importantly heard, enough of them to vote at this point. I did see and hear John Mayer and he was excellent.
Jason Isbell's lead guitar player (Tivoli in Chattanooga fall 2015) is a better guitar player than Isbell IMO. EDIT - Sadler Vaden played some amazing solos at that show...should not have said "better guitar player".
