Sometimes my local sports radio station gets bored during down times in the sports cycle and they hold random drafts. (Previous drafts have included candy, states, comedy movies and meat.)
Yesterday they drafted bands and I thought it might be a fun thing to do here, if there's interest.
(If you're interested and have an hour and a half to listen to sports talk people and a local music promoter draft bands, you can listen here:
The audio is at the bottom of the article but beware that the draft picks are listed as well if you want to avoid spoilers.)
Anyways, I figure this would be best with 10-15 people. I can generate a draft order. Maybe give each person twenty four hours to make their selection or the next person can skip them?
I'm thinking maybe six rounds? People can state their case case for their pick, maybe post a supporting video or two.
At the end we can poll it up for a vote on who had the best draft.
I think the only real rule should be that it can't be a solo artist or a solo artist that performs under a band moniker (like Iron and Wine). Solo artists could be a whole separate draft if this ends up being fun.

Question, how would the "positions" work? I'm guessing vocals-guitar-bass-drums for sure. Keyboard/synthesizer? Brass? Turntables?
Different exercise here.
This you are simply drafting a stable of the best bands of all time, not creating a supergroup. Think of it as putting together a festival lineup or compilation album or record label but each band is exclusive to you.
What you're talking about would be fun, too. Actually, there was one of those going around here a while ago where there was a list of artists with a corresponding value and you had to put together your ideal lineup within the budgeted amount.
Looks like we have six so far. Once we get somewhere in the 10-15 range I'll generate the draft order and update the original post. (Random order, snake draft.)
Is the goal to create the best "team",from all possible bands ever? Like, does an obscure awesome pick help you? Or is this just gonna be a first round of Beatles, stones, Zeppelin, etc? Because that could be an exercise in predictable tedium.
Not saying I'm not in, but it seems like with the " player universe" of all bands ever, without a clear goal (eg:best fest li eup) there isn't a scarcity factor that makes sports/fantasy sports etc drafts exciting.

Maybe I don't get it.
I'll Play.
First few rounds will be the obvious but after the top 50 or so it could get very interesting

I'm going with the tedious goal. The goal is to come up with the "best" overall group of bands, best being entirely subjective.
While the top three are probably locked in, their order and the picks after that should be wide open.
Use whatever criteria you'd like for your pick and try to "sell" everybody else on why it's a good pick. Is it a really popular act? Commercially successful? Innovative? Influential? Had a long history? Incredible live shows?
We'll open it up to poll voting when we're done to determine a winner but really it's just an excuse to talk about music, post videos and to make lists.
If this turns out to be interesting/fun/whatever then we could always try other ones like building a festival lineup, putting together a fantasy band, best solo artist, etc.
So possibly twelve so far. I'll give it a little while longer and will lock participation in the morning or when we hit twenty, whichever comes first. I'll tag everyone when it's set.
I'm picking the bands I want and I don't give a damn if anyone else likes them. Based on my music tastes and that of this board overall my dream roster would probably finish dead last
