Now that the furor has died down a bit from the initial release I'm curious if people prefer this lineup to last year which also received some backlash upon release.
Personally I'll take this year. Headliners crush last year and I've encountered a shocking number of new and new-to-me bands that I am already totally into. Going to be a lot of good stuff to shake your ass to and some fun oddities. It helps that I'm not terribly fascinated by most EDM or rap, the lack of which seem to be the bulk of folks' gripes this time around.

Almost identical situation to yours. Headliners clearly crush last year, and while initially I thought the undercard sucked I'm really surprised at how excited I am for acts I wasn't even familiar with before.
I do like EDM, and wish we could swap out Flosstradamus and Chainsmokers for more interesting EDM acts, but whatever.
So right now 2016 > 2015 for me. We'll see how it all plays out in reality.

I do enjoy EDM, just not very many artists and very little of what is currently popular so it's rarely an aspect that gets me excited about a festival. Deadmau5 and bassnecter at the top are just as inspiring to me as Macklemore and Halsey - that is to say not much if at all.
If this is based off personal tastes, I think there is more for me this year. Although I did discover a lot of artists last year that ended up being some of my favorites (Courtney Barnett, The Growlers, Mac Demarco, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, The Districts, Jamie XX). But there is also a lot more garbage on the lineup this year

The way I view it is that last year was a legitimate first tier North American festival line-up. Even though it was about as bad as you can get within that tier, you could still tell that Bonnaroo put out a lineup that mid tier festivals could not even if they wanted to.
This year I'm struggling to find points of differentiation between this lineup and Sasquatch, Wayhome etc... I suppose that some of those fests couldn't manage our combination of headliners?

2015 wins easily for me. The headliners this year will be the saving grace for this lineup for me. Last year, I didn't care for any of the headliners, save Kendrick, but the undercard was good enough I still looked forward to attending. '15 had K Dot, Flo, War on Drugs, Tears For Fears, Flying Lotus, EWF, Caribou, SBTRKT, Run The Jewels, Jamie xx,Tycho, Gibbs and Madlib, Shabazz Palaces, Jungle, Courtney Barnett, and a lot more I was excited to see. Slayer beats all this year's metal alone. The Bluegrass was much stronger with contemporary acts like Punch Brothers and Trampled By Turtles. Even the butt-rock bands were seemingly better with AWOL and 21 Pilots. This year It will be nice to have a funk theme to my weekend. There are a bunch of bands in that genre I'll enjoy. On the undercard, I'm really only excited for Tame Impala, M83, Blood Orange, and Kamasi Washington. There are a handful of acts like Father John Misty I've seen several times that always put on a good show. I'm mainly going this year because it's become tradition and it's the closest large scale camping fest. I prefer the Coachella and Sasquatch lineups. I still have no doubt I'm going to have a ball at Roo this year.

Last year was way better overall.
A festival lineup shouldn't be a homework assignment. Last year, while disappointing compared to years prior, at least had a high percentage of bands I was familiar with beforehand. And plenty to be excited for, even if the headliners were underwhelming.
This year has a few acts that are more exciting than anything last year (LCD, Ween, Miguel for me mainly), but too much I don't care about. Can I find stuff I'd see in the lineup? Sure. But "pretty good" unknown bands aren't what I drive across the country for

So I just did a quick quantification of 2015 vs 2016 for my own personal tastes, using the headliner pool rules. Headliner 3 pts, other 1 pt. I went through 2015 and ticked all the acts I was excited to see, or even would be excited to see given current knowledge (not who I actually saw, because conflicts etc), and the same for 2016. Came out like this:
2015 - 37 points 2016 - 53 points
At least 3 points of the difference is an additional headliner (I counted both kendrick and mau5 as headliners, so 6 points for them). The rest is undercard. Weird, didn't expect it'd be that big.

To me it's pretty close. I like this year's headliners a lot more. Mainly because Pearl Jam is one of my favorite bands. So that weighs in a lot towards liking this year more. Plus there's Tame Impala, M83 and some smaller bands I'm really excited about like Daughter and Dungen. Last year is probably deeper. I voted for last year, but I'm still not even sure about that. That's how close it is.

This method makes the results mean nothing for me since the level of excitement for each act isn't taken into consideration. I've gotten bored and done something like this in the past, but you should rank level of excitement for each act you marked that you want to see. maybe on a 1-5 or 1-10 scale. 10 being McCartney or whoever and 1 being a one album Thursday act you enjoy but probably won't listen to much after Bonnaroo. Then add all of those up.

Definitely, if I were to compare the top tier acts (listed above Superjam) that I really love from last year to this year, this year wins in a landslide.
2015: Kendrick, D'Angelo and the Vanguard
2016: LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala, M83, Ween, Miguel, Father John Misty, Two Door Cinema Club
Undercards are more comparable, although I think I'd still take this years.

interesting idea, but the problem when i do that is it's immediately going to swing heavier towards 2016 simply because there are more acts on my 2016 list. comes out to:
2015 - 211 2016 - 313
i've got 14 more acts on my 2016 list so they add up quick. I did also take an average of all my excitement numbers:

Schedule was also very unfortunate last year for me though for obvious reasons I'm not factoring that in yet.

yeah when making my list and seeing all the acts i missed that i really wanted to see last year made me remember how tough the scheduling was. definitely a big part of why 2015 was my least favorite year.
A festival lineup shouldn't be a homework assignment.
This is a really good point. Still, it's been a pretty fun homework assignment so far.
also last year didn't have Ween.
I haven't gotten through the whole lineup yet but I haven't found many new acts that I'm actually looking forward to. Lots of generic white boy soul and indie pop music in the lineup. Flux Capacitor, Floozies, London Souls, and Cymande are pretty cool but probably not anything that would get me to centeroo early in the day or that I'd skip something else for.
and I'm super stoked for Ween of course but I'm scared they're going to get stuck with an hour long daytime set instead of the epic late night they deserve

And the headliners being 3 of my top 5 or 6 means i at least get all of them guaranteed. Missing some of tame impala won't kill me and I just saw a truckload of ween. Most of my other top ten bands are not likely pre-headliner or late night bands so I hope they will be broadly scattered. Claypool/Lennon placement worries me the most; can't miss that.

I can't compare the two until at least a schedule comes out and I prolly wont vote until after the fest. Hard to say at this point, but I would lean towards 2015, but those headliners could push 2016 over the top. We shall see.

Only one headliner for '15, two for '16. LCD is fringe for me but I decided not to count them if I wasn't gonna count the 1 song I caught of Kendrick (king kunta was the best song to come into) that I enjoyed but didn't really plan on seeing.
Basically '15 is more stacked at the top and middle with less headliners and less at the bottom. Whereas '16 has great headliners with a light top, decent middle and strong undercard.
'15 feels better because more likable acts had higher acclaim last year versus this year there are more up and coming good bands. This year is fringe for me, the past two lineups really drive the headliner vs undercard debate. How much value do you put in headliners, how much can the undercard suffer if all the headliners are amazing and you plan to get pit for each one?
Bonnaroo is gonna be great regardless, but you cant say this year will be one of the top 3 festival lineups in North America. And Bonnaroo is that big, so its a shame. I don't think Roo is done for, but I sure hope this doesn't continue to trend in this direction.
I think both are pretty equal in my book. 2015 had much better edm and it seems like I'm not alone in that regard. 2016 headliners put 2015 to shame though because dead and LCD are some of my favorites. This years undercard is definitely lacking although there are some gems hidden in the lineup. So after weighing the pros and cons they're both pretty equal in my opinion. Also fucking ween !!!!!!

This is hard without a schedule for this year. Last year I was excited for 49 and saw 41. This year sans schedule only 38 as far as excitement. And I felt like I was stretching for 38. With conflicts and a few added finds, I'll end up in the 35 range.
I will say that my top 5 on 2016 has me more excited than top 5 of 2015.
