General Info Members: Jack Stratton on keyboards and drums, Theo Katzman on guitar and drums, Woody Goss on keyboards, and Joe Dart on bass. Other musicians occasionally contribute such as Antwaun Stanley, Joey Dosik, David T. Walker, and Cory Wong. Biography: from their own site: "Vulfpeck is a half-Jewish post-geographic rhythm section formed in Southeast Michigan. Originally studio musicians at Vulf Records, (they) went independent in 2011." from the wiki: "The band members attended University of Michigan's music school. They first came together as a rhythm section for a performance at the Duderstadt Center, a university facility that houses an arts library and other resources. After reading an interview with German producer Reinhold Mack, band founder Jack Stratton conceived of Vulfpeck as a German version of the Funk Brothers – session musicians who performed most of the instrumentals on the 1960s Motown records. The idea was to channel that era of the live rhythm section." Discography: Mit Peck - 2011 Vollmilch - 2012 My First Car - 2013 Fugue State - 2014 Thrill of the Arts - 2015 It's probably a safe bet they will release another album in 2016 - most of these are under 40 minutes so you can knock out the whole discography in a day or two if you have a little time.
Sounds Like Genre: Funk / Jazz Similar Artists: The Meters immediately come to mind with hints of Sly, even some Jackson 5 and Isaac Hayes. They're definitely a bit goofy and playful hitting moments that would be perfect as 70s and 80s TV theme songs Similar Bonnaroo Artists: Kamasi Washington, Con Brio, Lettuce, a bit of Shamir
Suggested Listening Man, all 5 albums are solid front to back (unless you aren't feeling like getting your guided smile meditation on right then) so i'll try to provide a good mix:

Physical Reaction/Live Show I have not seen them but I believe this has the best chance of being this year's Atomic Bomb! (with Kamasi right on their heels). It's going to be a funky dance party from start to finish and should not be missed. Everyone but the bassist is a multi-instrumentalist on stage. They are built to be a live band with their rhythm section chops alone. It seems like they might mix in some funk standards with their own music which will no doubt please the masses. A sunset set would be ideal.
Interesting Facts They released a silent album on Spotify, titled Sleepify, with many short tracks that they encouraged their fans to listen to as they slept so that Spotify would owe them the very small pay-per-play fee for each blip of nothing they "listened" to. With this money they funded a free tour in the areas that had listened the most. Spotify caught on and took it down eventually - noisey.vice.com/en_uk/read/youneedtohearthis-the-band-that-cheated-spotify-have-been-banned-from-spotify-sleepify-vulfpeck
Personal Notes For me these guys have gone from unknown before the lineup release to a top-3 must-see. The aforementioned Atomic Bomb! was the only other act that's climbed so fast so quickly in my esteem in recent memory. They all clearly have truly elevated musical talent as individuals and still mesh beautifully. Clearly I am very excited.

Nice write-up, was definitely hype to see them before, but you've vamped it. My buddy told me about that Sleepify thing too, i had a good laugh out of it.

nice write up, one of my favorite discoveries since lineup drop as well. a "goofier meters" is a great way to describe them, I'd never thought of it that way. coincidentally they are playing a few sets during jazzfest in new orleans, hoping to catch them at one of those shows before roo.
Highly anticipating this set, for sure. Kinda bummed they're gonna be a Thursday act... Need some room to get funky out there
if their thursday confirmation is only based on that pollstar link that has Judah and the Lion playing all 4 days and lettuce on thursday and sunday i'd to say that's a light confirmation. Please let me now if i'm wrong. If they close a tent on thursday that would also be acceptable.

I was just going off of the Confirmation thread haha, youre probably right! Closing a tent Thursday means they'd probably be conflicting with Papadosio. I ain't bout that fam. Plus tents Thursday night are hella crowded so my hope is really any other day honestly
that picture almost tricked me into thinking my favorite glee boyfriend was playing bonnaroo. turns out they were just his backing band on tour or something. teenage dream or not, i'm excited about this set!

could also mean they are conflicting with The Floozies. I would hate that conflict as I want to see all 3 bands. Lets not have all them on Thursday Bonnaroo.

Haha, whoops. That was the only picture that I found where you could see them all pretty clearly other than a very tight shot from that 1612 video. Didn't occur to me it might be popular because of someone else in the picture I didn't recognize.
Their live show and their albums are quite a bit different. I wasn't too excited to see them until I started Youtubing their live performances.
From what I read they do nearly all of their albums as one group at the same time with very little extra production or layering. I'm also under the impression that some of those YouTube links are from the album sessions which it seemed like they record and release themselves with their own telltale video production style.
Just wanted to say thanks for this. I know nothing about Vulfpeck and was trying to figure out a good place to get information when I remembered this subboard existed. A quick search and voila!
