General Info Biography: Hailing from Fort Worth, TX, Leon Bridges didn't always take on the classic soul style that has risen him to critical acclaim. In fact, Leon originally found inspiration in more modern artists, such as Usher, but found his voice wasn't built for flashy runs. Instead, Leon began to partner his voice with a smooth soul sound. After test-driving his new sound regularly at open-mic nights (at the same place he worked as a dishwasher), Bridges began to attract attention. It was his track, "Lisa Sawyer", in particular that first began to make waves. Quickly, the signature 50's/60's soul styled-songs formed an entire album titled, "Coming Home". The album was an immense success, and Leon Bridges has since toured regularly and made various TV appearances, including performances of "River" and "Smooth Sailin'" on Saturday Night Live. Major Discography: Leon has only one full length release to date, Coming Home. Bridges also appears on the soundtrack for "Concussion", and released a deluxe version of his debut album which includes an additional 5 songs.
Sounds Like Genre: Gospel, Soul, RnB. Similar Artists: Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Alabama Shakes Similar Bonnaroo Artists: Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Allen Stone
Suggested Listening Leon's entire first album is a great listen, front-to-back. However, if you find yourself wanting to skim, here are some good options.
"Lisa Sawyer" - A track about Leon's mother's conversion. This was Leon's first song to catch attention.
"Smooth Sailin'"
"Better Man" - Live ACL Taping
Physical Reaction/Live Show Leon Bridges live will bring you an incredible amount of warmth. I had the pleasure of attending his ACL Live taping, and the talent of Leon and his band is incredible and the sound itself - infectious. His set at Roo is bound to leave all in attendance twistin & groovin'.
Personal Notes I couldn't be more excited to see Leon Bridges live again. As I've mentioned, his talent is truly rare. Proud to be from the same state as this incredible artist. He may be a typical get for festivals this year, but it won't make his set any less special.

Though this should probably be moved to the Band a Day threads, I do agree that Leon will be excellent; all the live clips I've seen of him are pretty spectacular! I'm hoping he's What or Which earlier in the day. I feel that if he were to close a tent, he'd be conflicting with a lot of other acts I'd need to see

Yeahhhh for some reason it posted to both. This happened with my other band-a-day post as well. Not too sure why. I'm confident he'll be late afternoon on either What or Which.

Do the White Denim guys let loose and jam a bit? Or is the show all about Leon? He's a really amazing talent, but I'd love to see them really extend those grooves when they're playing live.

The White Denim members produced songs for him and toured with him for a while when he was getting started, but Leon now has a consistent (different) backing band that tours with him. The guys from White Denim had to return to focusing on their own stuff. But, the band does jam a bit throughout his live performances.
