I think it benefits the town to have at least 4 in the D1 runoff. I'm hesitant to move my vote since I'm currently slated for the runoff, but if I wake up and it's still at 3 I will probably move.
Carini, Bacon, Monky - the three without votes, for the record.
I'm indifferent. I don't think there is any proof that 4 is better than 3 in the initial runoff or vice versa. Similarly, I have no reason to oppose either one.

I can't tell if more time for talk early on does more or less damage, so I'm without an opinion.
Both fair points. I should have clarified, I think 4 is better (or even 5) because obviously by dummy math it increases the chances of snagging a mafia. I feel like talking also is a good thing, amongst the townies. I really appreciated that KDogg got people talking last game and felt it helped the game.

Well, what did kdogg do to get people talking? Brian Wilson did 40 songs last Sunday, epic. I highly encourage any and all players to catch this show on the tail end of the tour or at a fest.

I think Kdogg was a double edged sword in the last game. He thought so hard that it both added to and distracted from real evidence. But he definitely made the game more interesting... and rereads longer...
On point, I also prefer 4 in a runoff to 3 on day one, just for more talk and a little pressure on more people. I always feel compelled to get more involved when I'm in a runoff. So, I randomized Tainted, Thor and Jaz in excel to put one in the runoff.
Having 4 or 5 people in a runoff technically increases the odds of having a mafia in the runoff.
However, assuming there is 1 mafia in there, the mafia are more able to sit back and play the odds that we fail to keep that mafia in runoffs and ultimately lynch.
If there were 3 people in the runoff and we lucked out with 1 mafia in there, the votes cast become all that much more meaningful and informative.
My point is, it's a double edged sword. And I'd rather expand the runoff of there is a specific reason to add someone. Not just for the sake of adding a random player.

This is what I'm thinking, it can do just as much benefit as harm when you see how far down the rabbit hole we can get by day 4. Statistically, we are at an advantage assuming we have a mafia in the 3 that are in. There is at best a small chance we add mafia in out of whoever becomes the 4th.
Then again, I've been wrong more times than right on this game.
I've gone back and forth on 3 vs 4 since I started playing Mafia. I have yet to come to a solid decision, so I'm fine with either.
One day, probably on a rainy one, I'll go back and make an excel spreadsheet analyzing prior games about this issue. Too bad Viking isn't in this game...

So, what does Brian Wilson have to do with mafia?
Since you mention though, a friend of mine called me the other night. He asked if I wanted to see him at a show in June, where he's performing Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops. Total no brainer.

Probably about the same to do with mafia as the Boston Pops, but hey - day 1 has to be filled with some sort of discussion beyond "x>x becoz!"
Also anyone who would see pet sounds live and not take every opportunity to encourage their fellow roosters to attend is an asshat.
I would prefer a runoff of 4. It gives us the most opportunity to see more voting patterns. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the people we have. Myself (ZiG) and Potent always seem to make the Day 1 runoff for no particular reason. KrissyJo seems to have made it because this is her first game in a while. Jaz was picked at random? Seems like we are trying to shoot fish in a barrel.
IMO, LD has the most suspicious activity so far. He was a late voter (last actually) and with that last vote, he basically throws it away instead of choosing 1 of the 4 people with 1 vote to push up into the runoff.

Um. He changed his vote. There are 4 in the runoff.

Right, JR changed his vote from LD to Jaz so we have 4 in the runoff. I'm just saying I don't think we have a good 4 people in the runoff.
I've always been of the mindset that there is no "good" for the first round of voting. I know people have their arguments for/against, but I honestly don't see how you can vote the first day with any sense of who is what unless you're mafia.
Clarification: "You're" as in the royal "you're" - not pointing fingers this early by any means.
One of the items I find helpful is when people vote on D1R1. It feels like every game at least 1 Mafia votes at the tail end of D1R1. I remember last game specifically because I was Mafia with Rothric and Bun and both of them voted late and basically dumped their votes.
I would have to rely on a veteran here if this trend is fairly common in other games, but I think it is something better to go on than "KrissyJo is new this game" and "I picked someone using a random generator".
I know I'm not going to change the runoff now since we are at the deadline, but hopefully the information will stick for future games. It seems like the town almost always loses, but we keep following the same formula for picking our D1R1 (random selection or noobs).

I didn't even notice the game started until after I got out of work yesterday.
Not everyone can sit around at work and bullshit on the internet half their shift.
