Maybe I met some of you guys there? I was with my twin brother on the rail for Tim Hecker and GSY! BE...Holy shit those shows were so fucking good. Best sets i've seen all year right now. That Khrunbin set was amazing too! Those guys are sooooo talented. iii Points was a blast on Sunday!
If you were on the rail for Godspeed then you definitely saw me. I was in the pit for the first half of the set grabbing photos.
She certainly appeared to be. Raingurl is still such a banger tho
She definitely wasn’t lip syncing. Her mic was very live, she was just attempting to sing over her own track at max sound levels.
So the mic was on and I just couldn't hear it. Thinking about it more, I could hear organic vocal inflections every now and then, but mostly could just hear the track.
1. Rae & Ghost If you are a Wu-Tang fan, or a 90s hip-hop fan in general this set was great and I suggest catching them on this little tour they’re on. Wasn’t expecting the ODB or fugees covers and it was great to hear CREAM live.
2. Tyler Straight raged at this set. Tyler could, and should be headlining bigger festivals. His production while not over the top is really great.
3. James Blake I really like James but I was still pleasantly surprised at how good his voice is live. I felt the setlist hit all of the high points in his discography. And the prerecorded message from Andre really kinda made my night.
4. Godspeed Just wow. This was my first time getting to see them, and the set was a spiritual experience. If they would’ve played something from Lift Your Skinny Fists than it probably would be my favorite of the weekend.
5. DJ Koze I’ve really gotten into the electronic scene only in the last year or so, but this is my favorite DJ set I’ve ever been to. Loved he opened with “You & Me,” probably my all-time favorite love song. Fitting for V-day weekend.
Honorable mentions: James Murphy, The Internet, DJ Seinfeld, Herbie Hancock.
Overall I loved how easy it was to bounce between stages, and I just loved this festival. Can’t wait for next year. The Mainframe is my favorite stage at any festival.
Beach House was a disappointment. Virtual Self’s production is ridiculous.
could you expand on Beach House? I kinda felt the same way but just want to hear your perspective.
I skipped their set here because I saw them at a club earlier in the year and based on that, I have to agree. They just lack energy live and the visual creative direction of their sets is kind of subpar.

Wasn’t at the fest but I’ve seen them six times and that’s definitely a plausible take. From a self-proclaimed huge fan I feel like if you love them then you think their live sets are incredible and the production and lack of movement on stage just personifies the music and the intensity comes from the music itself. But I could def see some people leaving underwhelmed.

I want to say they’re too ambient to be compelling live, but that was disproved by Tim Hecker. I think they suffer from their songs sounding very similar to one another excluding the obvious standouts. Which is totally fine when you’re taking bong rips while some vinyl spins, but live it’s a little boring. I also think they’d benefit from a stronger visual aspect to the show.
Depression Cherry is one of my favorite albums, maybe my most favorite in the sub-genre. With that said, I’m not a super fan and if you are I’m sure they’re very enjoyable. There was nothing technically wrong with the set IMO.

I’ve always liked Beach House and think they’re great live, but wouldn’t have much interest in seeing them at a fest. Not the right setting/mindset for their show.

Spend the SZA money on something Gorillaz-esque. I’ll also take The Acid, and Blockhead. Just give me some more of that sweet, sweet R&B. And House, I trust you.
