Well, there's the first of the confirmed Wu no-shows -- Ghost is doing some shows overseas with Killah Priest and will not be at Roots Picnic. So much for "all members have been contacted and contracted." Assuming Meth no-shows (all but guaranteed), lookin' like the B-squad will be taking the stage once again. But hey, I'll never complain about RZA and GZA with a live band.

Where did you see that she'll be there? I'm dying for any sort of content to read on this event since there's almost nothing out there. I've had 3 chances to see D'Angelo, like literally being in the same place as him, and all three haven't worked out for one reason or the other.

4th time's the charm.
If you check Instagram user mjmpremier (who appears to do PR for Shelby J), there's a buncha pics of D'Angelo and Shelby which say that she got booked for the Roots Picnic show.
Assuming Pino is going to be there with John Mayer, this band roster is shapin' up to be reeeeeal nice. Now PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD D, do not cancel.
I'm CRAZY EXCITED! Would sure like a schedule though. Still have no idea if this Saturday show is a D'Angelo/John Mayer/Roots superjam or individual sets or what?!
Because I'm crazy for info on D'Angelo's band, I've been doing some social hardcore media snooping. Sharkey has been rehearsing with the Roots (sick!), and Jermaine and Redd (Vanguard backup vocals) have hashtagged their rehearsal pics as "VanTronics" -- so maybe D'Angelo's band will be a mix of the Vanguard and the Soultronics?!
Pino is also in New York right now. Putting these puzzle pieces together is resulting in a verrrrry funky picture.
Ohhhh shiiiiitttt, latest update from Vantronics rehearsals -- they were working on "The Line"!!! Maybe not a covers set after all?!? I'd expected 2+ hours of Prince and Funkadelic covers, so I will lose my shit if they bust out some D'Angelo originals.
Also, Pino is officially part of the band and in town for rehearsals!!!!

Unsure where to source this but I definitely read when they announced it that it was Roots, D and Mayer playing together in a band and playing each others' songs. Really interested to see which Mayer songs they do. Would love to hear D'Angelo sing "Come Back to Bed" or "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room"
He was only on stage for about 45 minutes. The Roots x John Mayer x D'Angelo set was about 1+ hours of the roots songs (with just the Roots) about 20 minutes of Common (nice surprise), 10 minutes of some beatboxer, 10 minutes of the only white dude on stage with some electronic beatboxing, 30 minutes of John Mayer playing his solo stuff, and 45 minutes of D'Angelo with the Roots and John Mayer as the backing band.
Dave Chappell had to come out and tell jokes to stall due to D'Angelo's tardiness (no complaints there).

This Fest was EXCEPTIONAL. I highly recommend it for next year, it's a little pricey ticket wise, but the location is great, getting in and out could not have been easier, and even sold out Saturday did not feel over crowded. There were some sound issues, especially during D' Angelo, but he was real late, and they didn't have all his gear til he got there, so I can't blame the fest for that. The crowd was also top notch, really chill, no lax bros or little sloots. If you don't mind the price tag the fest is well worth it.

D'Angelo would be top 3, but his set was kinda rough I thought, super rushed, crap sound, and the band was not together.
Wholeheartedly agree. Festival was extremely well run, crowd was great. Decent food, fantastic sightlines, and the nighttime atmosphere being surrounded by the huge buildings was beautiful. Amazing mud! My friends and I played ping pong to pass the time which was a nice addition. Loved the two stage, no waiting schedule. X Ambassadors was really out of place. Dave challelle showing up was an amazing surprise. Would have liked more D'Angelo but him being late was not a huge surprise. Would definitely go back if the lineup stays this way. Re-entry abilities would have neen nice. Overall 9/10 in terms of fests I've gone to.
I ended up picking up a Sunday ticket for $30 on Stubhub and couldn't agree more about the fest. It was well run, great crowd, the location was awesome and being able to get close for almost every act was a nice perk. The sheer # of special guests alone was amazing- Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Pharaohe Monch, Freeway, Alicia Keys, Sugarhill Gang, Mystikal, and Redman. Not sure how Amy Schumer ended up introducing Wu Tang but that was entertaining too. Overall great time and I hope they bring it back next year.
Echoing what others have said here -- Roots Picnic was one goddamn cool weekend. Initially I got a bit taken aback by the super abbreviated headline sets, but in retrospect, it totally worked. This fest was all about the Roots -- their supreme musicianship, their versatility, and namely, their friends.
Thought the D'Angelo set sounded goddamn amazing (even tho for a minute I totally worried he might not even show) and the Chappelle stalling sets were hilarious. 'Obviously, since I'm on stage, two things are true: Kevin Hart wasn't available, and D'Angelo's late.' John Mayer was an unexpected pleasure.
Sunday, the Wu were the tightest I've ever seen em (tho looking at that 'planned' setlist makes me forsake Ghost for no-showing). I also question was GZA was on stage but had Black Thought rap all his verses. But it was still So GODDAMN TIGHT!! Nile Rodgers was fantastic, a perfect festival pre-headline, what a dance party!
Give me even a half decent lineup for the NYC edition next year and I'm returning without hesitation. Well done!
