Suffolk Downs is announcing their 1st 2024 show tomorrow
good chance it’s Gizz
Supposedly the dates being announced also include Thompson's Point in Portland. I want to get up there for a show next year, since I'm thinking of moving there as I get closer to retirement for the lower cost of living, but I want to hold out and see if Wilco plays there next summer.
What's cool about the Noon onsale time is that it's a holiday for many, and the Sinclair box office opens at Noon on Fridays, so it's an opportunity to save by skipping the service charge.
I wouldn't count on a second night being added, should it sell out quickly. They'd then be playing seven nights in a row, including two 3 hour marathon sets right before Boston.
Of course, the Boston show will be the only night of the tour where a ferris wheel sits in with the band, so there's that.
(I think we're going to be seeing a lot of tour routing with artists playing Forest Hills right before Suffolk Downs, and visa versa. It's just so convenient for Bowery/AEG to book dates this way. I think they handle Thompson's Point, as well, so some artists, like Gizz is doing, will play all three venues.)
what is this "should you leave your phone on" business?! i dont think i've ever powered my cell phone off unless i was at like 10% battery and knew i'd need to use it several hours later.... of course you leave your phone on. who are you people?
regardless, i live in downtown boston and use rideshare apps probably 10 times per week. i always check both Lyft and Uber for price comparison when i am going somewhere. 90% of drivers in Boston work for both so i rarely see a major difference in availability. i suppose if i had to pick then sure yeah uber usually has a shorter estimated wait time. lately i think Lyft is cheaper when there is no surge pricing, but the lyft surge has been a higher multiplier than the uber surge, so if it's peak hours i find Uber to be cheaper. it's cyclical though, i feel like the cheaper option switches every 4-6 months
I only turn on my phone when I need to for 2FA, to use an app, or check texts. I don't want to burn through the battery and mobile data just for the convenience of having it on at all times.
BTW, roughly how much would a weeknight 11 pm-ish Uber ride cost from Beverly, MA to Cambervillington? Just asking for a Dawes fan.
Sheesh, there seems to be a new trend starting and I don't like it. Bands used to go out on tour and have a particular format for the tour. The setlist may vary every night, but the basics are the same. Often, bands would do entire tours where they played a single album in its entirely at every tour stop. A lot of artists still do this.
A new trend, though, seems to be one where a few shows have a special format and the rest are "lesser than" by not featuring the special whatever. MMJ did a bunch of shows recently where they performed It Still Moves in its entirety, but more shows where they didn't. The Gizz tour is peppered with 3-hour marathon shows and acoustic sets. And Dawes announced two other dates besides Beverly, MA. The MA and NH shows are regular tour dates, while the show outside of NYC features my favorite Dawes album, Stories Don't End, played in its entirety.
So, I pretty much lost interest in the Cabot show. It's being advertised as a regular stop on the same tour they've been doing all year, and their latest album is my least favorite or second from the bottom of theirs, and I'm really not in the mood for a show heavy on that material, along with the usual songs they always play. Plus, there is an opening act, it's not even "an evening with" like they were doing earlier this year.
I was at The Sinclair box office today and couldn't resist trying to get some info on Suffolk Downs show drops. I didn't ask for specific names, because I knew she wasn't going to say anything, but I did ask if more shows were going to be announced very soon, and she said yes.
Well, this isn't good news. I'm probably going to need to take a half-day of PTO every time I go to a weeknight concert anywhere other than Cambridge and Somerville just to be able to deal with all of the diversions, since this will likely double travel time.
(It's a hard pass for me on using Uber or Lyft. It's creepy AF getting into a stranger's car, plus there's a good chance it's likely to be a COVID hot box and a "too much cologne/stinky pine tree hanging from rear view mirror" hot box. Say what you will about the MBTA, but air actually circulates in their vehicles, which isn't likely to be the case in someone's car.)
Has anyone been to the Orpheum lately? The last time I was there, maybe five or six years ago, it seemed terribly rundown and it feels like it's been that way for much longer than that.
With HoB, MGM, and the Wang all options for LiveNation shows, I can't believe that Belle & Sebastian are playing there. I shudder to think how much of a dump it's turned into by now.

The Orpheum and the Wilbur are the two worst venues in Boston.
A short Piebald/Weakened Friends tour in the northeast has just been announced for December, with a date at ME Down on Thurs 12/14.
It seems like we're in the midst of Cambridge/Somerville shows by all of the area's best bands (imho, that is). Seeing Future Teens, Ovlov, Pile, Weakened Friends, and Hallelujah The Hills within a 30 day or so stretch is a great way to close out the year.
FINALLY went to a show at the Crystal Ballroom and I love the space. The sound and sightlines are great, and the booths in back are great if you want to hang back in comfort, while still being able to hear the music. No draconian TSA search upon entry either.

It really feels like we should have heard about more Suffolk Downs shows by now.
If someone sold out Roadrunner the last time they were in town, doesn't it make sense for Bowery to put them at Suffolk Downs rather than Roadrunner again?
I'm beginning to think that the real estate developers who own the property really only want a couple of events each summer for the publicity value rather than have a sincere interest in turning the space into a thriving concert space, even if only for a few years until residential properties open there and they can't have an outdoor concert venue a stone's throw away from pricey condos.
To me, the fact that the Isbell show is at Roadrunner and not Suffolk Downs is a huge red flag about the developers' level of interest in running a full slate of events there.

wait until the coachella lineup drops and you’ll see many more aeg tours getting announced

But AEG has already dropped 15 shows it's doing at other area venues for June and beyond. It's only The Stage at Suffolk Downs which is suspiciously quiet, except for Gizz/Geese. There's still the issue of why they're putting Isbell at Roadrunner instead of Suffolk Downs, since he sold out Roadrunner this past summer.

Here we go again. Due to a lower back pain flare-up this week, I have a free ticket to Saturday night's Anthony Jeselnik 7 pm show at the Wilbur to whomever wants it. I'm on the mend and could probably deal with a standing venue show right now, but sitting for two hours without getting up isn't a good idea right now. (Standing up every ten minutes at a comedy show is a great way to get called out from the stage by the performer.)
Damn, that Solid Sound lineup is incredible. Why the fuck do they have to hold it in one of the few Massachusetts cities without direct train or bus service to/from Boston and without enough hotel rooms for a class reunion, much less a music festival?
The Boston Calling lineup is really going to seem shitty by comparison.
