Just wanted to say Thank you to all the folks on this message board. Started reading it around the end of last year and learned so much. Totally expanded my world of music based on artists that others wanted to see. Learned about how great the after shows can be which resulted in one of the best musical experiences I've had. And generally felt like more of a communal experience when attending Newport this year. Particularly call out Beaker and cgs299 for their active participation and contributions. Sad I didn't get to meet any of you at the festival but expect paths will cross in the future.
Thanks everyone.
Final question... what is the best way to get feedback to the festival organizers. Have a couple of very specific things that could easily be done differently to improve on the overall experience.

oh man! another amazing year for the books. This was only year two for me and I am so happy that I've made this a new tradition.
The sets I'm bummed that I missed: Matt the Electrician (my group got there too late..Friday mornings we have trouble getting our stuff together) Mandolin Orange (post J.P. Harris I desperately needed a meal and to sit a hot minute and made a sacrifice that I now regret) Margaret Glaspy (I opted to check out the full Pinegrove set -- I'll have to catch her next time she is in NYC) Rhiannon Giddens
Sets I was super stoked about: The Avett Brothers Ben Gibbard J.P. Harris & Chance McCoy Pinegrove Whitney Speak Out John Prine
Does anyone know if they end up posting any videos -- or is all of the recordings simply just audio recordings. I'm all ready to listen to my favorite sets again!

As I know you are all waiting on pins and needles for it, my recap will be coming later this week. Maybe even tonight, who knows. Didn't see a single less than stellar set.

I saw a bunch of awesome sets, and a few that left me a bit flat. I think the most flat was that Big Thief set - that hit the heights of Mary but other than that it was just not good for me. I don't get the hype.

I think you should post your suggestions right here (or in the 2018 thread) for discussion

I've DM'd them on FB at least get an acknowledgement. I would expect that they would be responsive to feedback.

OK. sent the message on FB. but, will also post here:
"Hey, still buzzing from this year's festival! Just wanted to offer some constructive feedback.
1. Choir! Choir! Choir! should be an annual invite on Sunday mornings. It was a great way to start the day.
2. Would be safer to have a dedicated bike lane upon exit of the festival. Gets a little dangerous with all the people, cars and buses getting out of the parking lot
3. For merchandise, would be good for them to mark which sizes have sold out as things sell out. People were waiting in long line only to find that their size was gone.
4. Would be good to have more merchandise so it doesn't sell out.
There are so many great things to talk about so mostly it is just keep on doing what you are doing, but wanted to provide those specific things that could be better. Thanks!"
I lurked the past few months and found all of the posts very useful, but after finally attending the fest for the first time (and All Newport’s Eve), it seems there is no better time to begin contributing than now! I absolutely loved the fest and have already started recruiting friends to come along for next year, I now believe the hype!
Favorite Sets of the Weekend: Josh Hedley Seratones Big Thief Chicano Batman Jalen N’Gonda Grandma’s Hands Band Mandolin Orange Nikki Lane Wilco The entire Fort Stage lineup on Sunday
Bummed I missed Angel Olsen, but I couldn’t tear myself away from the Nikki Lane set.
Also, hoping for a full Nicole Atkins set next year, her new album is great.

Any Tickheads out there...
Deer Tick has announced their New Years Eve shows for the year taking place on December 30th and 31st. They're switching it up this year and are playing Boston instead of Brooklyn. They'll be playing at the Sinclair both nights. I got tickets for the 31st. I hope to see some of you there!
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

All great suggestions. I can't imagine them not being accepting of those.

They could really just keep that whole Sunday morning lineup as a regular thing. Although I wouldn't mind them moving Choir Choir Choir to Sat. so there wouldn't be an annual conflict between that and Pres. Hall

Anyone know the spotify code? The artist presale ones are already gone...
No sorry I used an artist presale code but if I get the Spotify one I'll message you
No worries, I think I might do the Amex presale tomorrow. For anyone looking to resell these it appears that there will be a delivery hold until 4pm the day of the show.....

Thanks for posting these suggestions. I was eager to hear it because honestly, I think they do a fantastic job with the logistics. Almost everything that I've wanted to change, I reconsidered after thinking it through and realizing they had a greater plan. That being said, there's always room for improvement, so discussion is fun to have. For instance, I don't remember them having plastic decking in 2015, which caused the trip from Harbor to Quad to be really messy. That was a great improvement. 2015 also had serious problems with the water stations, but the new Kleen stations were absolutely solid in '16/'17.
Having some sort of bike lane would be great, but I don't see how it would work given the space they have and how 99% of the bikes have to exit left from the fort? The fort road itself has no room because busses have to go in both directions. Would've been nice of the Fort itself to install a true separated bike lane instead of building that huge new building that we have to walk around now
Some/all of their merch is obviously supply constrained for hype purposes- e.g. they sell out posters every year very quickly. I think the sweatshirt sellout on Saturday was due to weather - nothing they can do there unless they could've gotten more sweatshirts with one day notice. Documenting what sells out is a good idea. I hope they do that, even though it's in their interest to keep people in line so they buy something else instead.
Choir Choir Choir is such a great idea for the Festival, but if they come back I hope they switch up the songs!
My biggest suggestion: they should put up some more shade tents. They're obviously in demand given the huge amount of tents that park in the Fort. There used to be a shade tent near the Fort portapotties, and there was even one random one in the Quad two years ago (but that might've been a vendor that didn't show? not sure). Having multiple large shade tents where blankets are not allowed would help with the flow a lot. Since there are 3 stages, personal tents are not an efficient use of real-estate; there ends up being lots of empty blankets throughout the day. Anything you can do to encourage people NOT to stake out a huge area for themselves only is a win for the flow.
In keeping with the new blanket ban at the entrance side of the Quad tent, blankets should be banned from the rear of the Quad tent. They should throw down a single row of chairs that borders the fire lane, and then people can stand behind the chairs. It'd fit more people under the shade, and it'd be fully utilized instead of half empty most times.
Speaking of tents, anyone know if they own the tents or rent them? seems like the same tents every year, but I can't imagine it being cost effective to own them.
Another simple suggestion is to enforce the museum line bends instead of going straight back. Every time except one when I walked by, the line was going straight back, which does interrupt traffic flow. People are cool about making room, but they shouldn't have to. I guess the downside here is then it blocks people from standing under that window side listening to the acts...

I loved the weather this weekend. Even Saturday was nice. I had a light jacket on a bit of the day.
My 5 favorite sets were probably: Robert Ellis - I could watch him and Kelly Doyle play guitar all day. That Case Of You cover. So good Pinegrove - High energy set from one of the best young bands out there. He looks so happy up there. American Acoustic - Just all around wonderful talent. It is nice to see how they appreciate watching each other play while off to the side of the stage. Wilco - Solid set list. It was funny how quiet he was. Grandma's Hands Band - Really well done tribute.
Lots of other wonderful moments too. It is always fun to chat with friends there about what they are digging throughout the weekend. I forget how much I love the food. I think I had 3 crepes this weekend.
Pinegrove just announced a Boston date. December 8th at the Royale. They have a pre-sale on their Facebook and the tickets go on sale Thursday.

I'll be getting tickets to that Pinegrove show. I wasn't at all excited for them but was listening from outside the tent before trying to snag seats for Rateliff and they absolutely blew me away. I'm listening to them right now actually. I don't know why I wasn't interested in them going in. They give me a Starting Line/Say Anything/Early November vibe which is right in my wheelhouse when I want to listen to nostalgic music from my high school days.

Both of you (and anyone else going to see them on that tour they just announced) should make sure to get there for the opener Saintseneca. They're one of my hopefuls for next year and definitely a good pairing for Pinegrove.

Haha I actually just found out that they're opening. Like I said, I've been listening to Pinegrove all day (On Pandora) and I've heard a couple Saintseneca songs and immediately added them to my 2018 wishlist, so I'm very happy to see they'll be opening.

Oh, I will definitely be seeing Saintseneca. Already a fan. I really liked Dark Arc when that came out. Such Things was pretty solid too.

only ranking full sets I saw:

HM aka partial sets: Wilco Aaron Lee Tasjan Dr Dog Angel Olsen Prez Hall Nikki Lane Carl Broemel Whitney Offa Rex Pinegrove
*this was, to me, the quintessential Newport set. this is what Newport was founded on, what Newport is all about. this is what we need as human beings. they need to bring them back every single year, i honestly believe it was one of the most important things to happen at Newport this year, and i in no way mean that lightly. the context, the timing, the song choice, the levity and seriousness rolled into one. I'm not sure i have ever enjoyed a Newport set as much.

other thoughts:
change in the chair/blanket policy at the quad made a huge difference and led to better crowds and a more enjoyable experience over there, despite there being 9,999 people in the quad on saturday to escape the wind.
I'm ok with them having less surprise sets in the museum. it was nice not to have so spend a decent chunk of the day waiting there for something remarkable to happen.
A lot of first timers i encountered didnt seem to "get" it and had tons of complaints. i tried to explain to them that the fest is a nonprofit so there's only so much they can do, which was met with a few scoffs from people who had clearly never interacted with a nonprofit in their lives.
on that note, a group of drunk mega-bros, who bragged to a group of girls that they had bought childrens tickets on purpose, threatened to fight me on friday at the head and the heart, of all places. they had been talking through the whole set, and i finally told them to "go talk in the back" (we were less than 10 people from the front) during a particularly quiet intro to a song and they lost it. direct quote from a particularly young looking, curly headed lad: "don't talk to me like that, dont you ever tell me what to do ever again."
the bros are slowly infiltrating Newport. I'm hoping they find a way to stop it.
On the flip side, michael kiwanuka had one of, if not the, best crowds i have ever been in. total silence and attention. i credit the unannounced set overlapping with the 2nd half of his set to this. truely incredible; i was equally impressed with the crowd as i was his closer of "love & hate," which i had even already experienced once this summer but was dying to see again.
rode my bike for the first time on Sunday. it was the right choice, as the rest of my group left as waters came on stage to drive home. hoping to ride every day from here on out. so much fun and a great way to decompress and wind down after seeing such epic ans unbelievable stuff at prine.
i think this was my favorite of my 6 Newports. nothing i saw was less than stellar.
