seems kinda weird to have a single show in the middle of nowhere. Something more like Desert Trip with a few big names makes more sense to me.
They're banking that people will travel for the few bands that warrant that size venue (they already do in TN. Most people I know who went to the GnR Nashville show drove in from an hour or more away). This allows them to bring those bands in and not have to split the revenue with the Titans.
No (insert generic country fest lineup here) this year? I thought that would easily be the first genre they'd go to.
The article said one fell through this year. CMA Fest is a massive event; not sure if that saturates the Mid TN region for that genre or not.
Between that and Americanafest covering the indie country stuff, I'm not sure that's their best route. I would think either an EDM-centric festival or a straight up rock and roll festival mixing a couple of arena-sized headliners like Tom Petty or Fleetwood Mac with some classic rock midcarders like Cheap Trick or ZZ Top and some younger rockers like Moon Taxi or My Morning Jacket would go over best. I could see a Louder Than Life style metal festival working too, although LTL and Carolina Rebellion are both close enough to possibly already have that market saturated. I doubt any of them would draw 80k, but if they can pull 35k in with a Tom Petty or Bassnectar as their #1 and only run 2-3 stages they will probably still make money.

Probably just got ahead of themselves after they ended up in the red last year with all the ground improvements. Pimping out the venue is actually a good idea to get people in to check GSP out without worrying about longterm parking/care as well as getting the bankroll back up to pay for top tier headliners for a new country fest.
