I know someone that has a small involvement with Superfly and they told me there was a conference call a few months ago where the superfly folks had to inform the Live Nation poeple that Bonnaroo is in fact a 4-day festival, not 3 days lol
Regardless if Bonnaroo is collapsing, this Super Jam lineup is pretty good. As long as no shit dj's are involved, and real soulful music is being performed with ya know, brains and fingers, then it's going to be a great time. We should be in store for some nice surprises as well. Can only get better from last year's Super Jam..

Not to take away from your point, but it requires brains/fingers to create electronic music as well.

True but with the time signatures and shit, the human element differs so much from the digitally perfected side of a computer. A computer could never replicate the drum patterns of someone like John Bonham or Ziggy Modeliste without it sounding weird.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

The one organized by Kamasi Washington?
Yeah, the one butchered by the Third Eye Blind dude and co. It had it's moments, but it was boring a lot of the time.

One could technically program any pattern. It just takes a DAW and a vision. It might not feel as "natural" as a live drum track, but usually that wouldn't matter to a producer otherwise they would have just incorporated real drums. These workstations have come along way imo. As far as the feel goes, I would argue it does take that human element build and use transitions in a live mix. The feeling is sometime no different than playing with a room full of other musicians.

no comment on the quality of that SJ. But on paper it's pretty much the same thing, and I'd say Kamasi is a more interesting leader than Pres Hall.
I'd say last year had potential and just didn't deliver - so technically that could happen again this year.
Still, while I'd agree Kamasi may have been a more 'interesting' leader, Pres Hall is 100% for sure a more seasoned and reliable leader. That's why I think we can count on this year to be a good time.
Not gonna get my hopes up too much about special guests though. Last year had plenty of potential for that and we didn't get much of anything.

So I'm sitting at LAX waiting for a flight (only 4 more hours due to a delay FML) and I thought I'd share my thoughts on my first Coachella while it's all still relatively fresh in my mind.

Ben Jaffe is more or less the leader of PH. I don't know man. That sounds like an guess based on taste. Kamasi plays a little more modern style of jazz where Pres Hall is more traditional. But Pres Hall plays with everyone from Foo Fighters to My Morning Jacket to Beats Antique to one superstar guest a night during Jazz Fest and has the ability to play with anyone. They are one of the most adaptable "traditional" acts in history. I love Kamasi too, but I wouldn't suggest or assume that one of these acts was more interesting particularly when looking at the body of work and how that translates to the ability to host a superjam. Pres Hall can and does play anything with anyone and has been doing it for a long, long time. It might end up sucking. Who knows? But I wouldn't bet on it being weak. They could carry the whole thing on their own and just bring in singers, rappers, guitarist and whoever to play their songs or the covers they want to do with PH backing.
Come on Ken. While you see a ton of shit, you were having a hissy fit over the cancellation of Frank Ocean. You long have had enough credibility with me already, but if I didn't know you, it'd be like damn, wtf?
I guarantee you that the Midnight Preserves which run up to and over $500 for an hour/hour and a half of them with superstar bands or acts is not lame. Being packed into a tiny music hall for an extreme amount of money isn't my idea of a good time. But no way would that music suck. Jim James was one of the founders of the midnight preserves. You just buy tickets and show up without knowing who the guests are that night. Whether they support Jim James or My Morning Jacket in their entirety, Angelique Kidjo, Buffett (bah), Robert Plant, Shovels and Rope, Keb Mo, Tom Waits, Alabama Shakes, Infamous Stringdusters, Warren Haynes, Bombino and even Flavor Flav, it shows they can play with anyone.
The bottom line is that they have substantial live experience supporting jazz, rap, blues, rock, jam, classic rock, soul and most other forms of modern music. They can and do play anything and with anyone. They are also elite musicians. Personally I would keep an open mind rather than being negative on it. Last I saw them personally was Pres Hall & Friends at Hangout Fest 2015 where Beats Antique, Borahm Lee, Adam Deitch, the singer for Lake Street Dive and about 4 or 5 other special guests joined them. I promise you that set didn't suck at all nor was it lame.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
