Honest question: Why is a 3 year old festival in Madrid able to book a lineup that my 34 year old self would love to see every single year?
Am I really going to spend at least $850 on just the plane ticket to go to Spain? Would I feel safe there? NO
I'm sure it's been already discussed here at nauseam, but why can't Roo book a lineup like this new festival can?
I understand not wanting to pay the money to fly there, but why would you not feel safe? It’s Spain, not Afghanistan. Many here have done Primavera with no problem.
And as far as why we can’t get a lineup like this, I think the festivals in the US have just gotten fucking lazy. Why bother making the effort to assemble a decent lineup when you can just throw some shit together and people will pay for it.
Bonnaroo could do much worse than putting Pink on the What Stage in the Macklemore/Chance/Lionel slot.
Like who?
I'd take Pink over:
- Future - Imagine Dragons - Twenty One Pilots - Lana Del Ray (probably a minority on this one) - Chainsmokers, Skrillex, Bassnectar... any EDM not named Calvin Harris

Because LN wants to make a major out of Mad Cool combatting the already established festivals in Spain (Benicassim, Primavera, Bilbao BBK, Download etc). Just notice how CoS writes so much about Mad Cool and not about any other festival in Spain or even in Europe. They wanna expand from 55k to 80k attendees.. So you're obviously going to want to attract a lot of people (out of Spain mostly). Roskilde, NOS Alive and Rock Werchter are roughly around the same period and will have a lot of bands in common but all the attention right now goes to Mad Cool.

Because Roo is not a priority in the US, they have a lot of festivals there. Because a lot of people go anyways without even knowning what's going to be on the line up. Because the US has changed a lot and cheap edm/rap acts sell just as good. Europeans are more picky, when a line up sucks.. It has consequences and you'll see a difference the following year (I mean, I think so?) And last because Roo doesn't have to make a name in the US festival landscape, they're already a well known and established festival..

Meticulous curation is not in their best interest anymore as far as Bonnaroo goes. It’s not that they are geographically unable to produce a lineup like Mad Cool. They simply don’t care anymore. It’s more about taking care of Live Nation’s interests at this point.

This is exactly it. Which is not to say that Bonnaroo hasn't always cared about turning a profit - they've been a business since day one, and it's foolish to suggest otherwise - but it does seem a lot more bottom-line-centric since the Live Nation sale.
The type of bookings that excite us long-time festival vets are the ones that haven't played everywhere already. If you'd never been to a festival, I could see how this year's Bonnaroo would appeal - but if you'd done a few, there was nothing fresh on there except U2. Booking something cool and unusual may inspire brand loyalty, but it doesn't necessarily move tickets. Maybe those acts haven't played everywhere because they're just not that popular compared to the festival whores du jour? So why gamble on the niche rarity, when you can take the sure thing instead? That's why Nick Cave played to a mostly empty tent a few years ago, while Kaskade packed out the Which.
(Yes, I realise how cynical and curmudgeonly this makes me sound. Dern kids and their electronic disco musics. But... I'm not wrong).

I would definitely take Skrillex and Bassnectar over Pink. Why is Calvin Harris the exception?

His Wav Bounces album was one of my most listened to in the second half of this year. Id normally prefer for EDM to be outside of the headliner slots, but Id take him as an exception.
I remember the first year I went in 2010 they had the new lunar stage where Calliope is now, and every day they'd have this awful Rock Band contest and it seemed like every fucking person did green day. And everyone else was like, if I wanted to hear green day I wouldn't be at fucking Bonnaroo
