I just will forever find it odd that people have such visceral reactions to “pop” artists. That somehow even accepting that some pop can be good is heresy, and that it would in some way water down their status as a “music fan”.
I like CHVRCHES, I like Grimes, shit I even kinda like Bruno Mars, even though he just does karaoke other people's unreleased songs. But fucking Beyonce I don't get at all except for ra ra girl power snooooore
I share your thoughts on Green Day and your attachment to American Idiot. They were probably the first band I was really into. But seeing Green Day 10 years after I've really cared about them versus seeing the era's defining pop performer at the height of her powers is a no-brainer for me. Also she's definitely not generic radio pop. At least not with the last two albums.
I would 100% skip Beyonce for a nap. I would go check out green day because I've never seen them before. Beyonce at roo would be the ultimate selling out to me.
Bonnaroo has gleefully advertised a late night event for R. Kelly: Trapped in the Closest for like 5 years in a row. What kind of integrity do you think they have?

I also think there are a lot of people who’d criticize a Beyoncé booking but be fine with Justin Timberlake, even though he is far closer to the “generic pop music” definition.
Is it ok to be ok with both? Checking for a friend.

You’d think she killed your dog the way you talk about her. I mean god forbid a woman sing about things women might relate to, right!
It’s one thing to not like Beyoncé, but to call her generic pop shows you don’t know a whole lot about Beyoncé or pop music.
Beyoncé, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Bruno Mars, Pink!, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift all seem like generic pop to me. If not what is generic pop and how does it defferenciate between the artists listed.
Lumping those artists together is like lumping Marshmello and Justice together.

Ok, let's book a comedian that talks about her period for an hour

It’s hard for me to wrap my head around this. Green Day is the definition of a sold out, radio rock act and was probably somewhat responsible for a lot of the terrible music the late 90’s and early 00’s produced. Beyoncé is a polished vet and one of the best in her genre. Green Day is barely relevant it seems at this point. Dookie was the first cd I ever owned and an all time favorite before it became so played out.
Edit: I guess from my perspective (since I mostly grew up a rock guy), Green Day grew into more of a novelty and that was mostly to do with how much time I spent with the genre. I can’t say the same for pop, but I can recognize the appeal for a live Beyoncé show and can say it would be a HUGE get for this festival.

The Vagina Monologues in the comedy tent would be a fantastic booking actually.
Lilithfair here we come!
Beyonce and JayZ as hip hop "royalty"had only mildly annoyed me in the past. But her booking Cochella knowing she was pregnant with twins, knowing she probably wouldn't be able to do it, and not telling the Bookers I thought was a complete dick move

I don't see you complaining when 90% of the acts booked have cocks.

I don’t hate all the artists that’s stand in the field of generic pop, I love justin Timberlake and I know he’s generic pop, I think Pink! WOuld be fun set at roo, both still amazing and it doesn’t lessen anyone’s status as a music fan. Just doesn’t fit Bonnaroo and does seem a little selling out like, I’d rather have a band play or someone legendary that’s not only a radio hit playing another 4 chord song. I know we are past the me of Bonnaroo no being a fest that gets Neil Young, but that sounds far better than people constantly on the radio charts.

Um...
1. Christina hasn't put an album out in five years. She's irrelevant to the pop scene at this point.
2. Lemonade was anything but generic. I doubt any other pop star could replicate it with ease.
3. In terms of male pop stars, Ed Sheeran is closer to generic than either Bruno or JT. Bruno and JT are also consummate performers. Ed is a dude with a guitar and a loop pedal.
4. Gaga at least tried to do something different with Joanne. Whether or not she was successful is up for debate. (IMO she was.)

Yeah, fuck Beyoncé and all her stupid radio hit 4-chord songs. I'd much rather have Green Day. At least their music is super complex and they were never a radio hit.

then what makes them not generic pop? And what in your example is generic pop? Why can’t I lump them together? They are all people that play on every hot 100 or top pop song radio channels
I'm just sitting here shaking my head over someone being so offended that someone might play a song from the view of the opposite sex. I've had to listen to dudes singing about their wangs for years.
