Paul McCartney (2013) LCD Soundsystem (2016) Tool (2007) Radiohead (2012) Jack White (2014) Kendrick (2015) Phish (2012) Phish (2009, 1st show) Beastie Boys (2009) Elton John (2014) Dead & Co. (2016) - 1st set only Widespread Panic (2007)
-------------
Pearl Jam (2016) - caught maybe 30 mins? The Police (2007) - skipped Bruce Springsteen (2009) - skipped to keep my spot after The Mars Volta, waiting for NIN's LN set. Phish (2009, 2nd show) - skipped RHCP (2012) - caught less than an hour Tom Petty (2013) - skipped Jack Johnson (2013) - skipped Kanye (2014) - skipped Billy Joel (2015) - skipped for GoT Mumford (2015) - skipped Deadmau5 (2015) - skipped for Flying Lotus, would have liked to seen some of the show
I've skipped almost as many headliner shows as I've seen, didn't think the ratio would be quite that high. That's valuable nap/recharge time before going into the late nights.
postreznorjack, surprised to see you skipped Trey's set in '04. Extenuating circumstances?

04 was a shiz show with all the rain. It had rained so hard that weekend we had to move our car before we got stuck. Another storm rolled through right before Trey and lots of people were leaving. We ended up parking our car right behind the fence in near the what field and waiting for the run to stop and then watching from the roof.

Skipped: Dave Matthews Band (to pack. First and only time I've left Bonnaroo on Sunday night.) Kings Of Leon (late night planning. Should have stuck around.) Eminem Red Hot Chili Peppers (had a blast at the lounge with Stooges Brass Band) Jack Johnson Mumford & Sons (Slayer!) Deadmau5 (FlyLo!)
I missed 2014 and I'm pretty sure that would have been my favorite Bonnaroo. The undercard and late nights were stacked.

Girlfriend at the time needed to get back to Auburn, she had school or work or something that Monday. Snowman describes the scene well, it was a torrential downpour. Slow going getting out.

I was in the pit for both. The crowd and the band both seemed way less interested. Maybe it was the smaller crowd. Maybe it was the shorter set (26 songs in '08, 22 in '16). Maybe it's just diminishing returns.
According to setlist.fm, they skipped 4 songs on their setlist, including Pink Floyd and Who covers, so I'm guessing they were feeling it too.

I think they played Rockin in the Free World instead of Baba O'Reilly because of the Orlando shooting. I'm not so sure what the deal was with the Pink Floyd song, but they did play Comfortably Numb, which was the highlight of the show.

That shooting was literally in the process of happening during their set. I'm sure the lightning delay had more to do with cutting songs.

You're right about the timing of the shooting but whatever reason for it I'm pretty sure it was a one-to-one replacement, as opposed to they were going to play both and cut the Who song. I kinda don't see them playing two Floyd songs either.
They probably didn't play a very long set because Eddie got drunk during the rain delay. He seemed a little fucked up. So yeah, rain delay.
Both very likely. I still feel like they were less engaged. Either way, the set connected with me less. I've seen them a bunch of times and they've never been bad. That was just the least noteworthy set for me.

Hot Take: Sufjan Stevens is kinda boring, and his later work requires too much context to simply enjoy as a non-Sufjan knob-slobber. Particularly Carrie and Lowell.

The lightning delay really neutered the crowd IMO.... PJ could have saved it if they brought it 110%, but it felt like just another stop on the tour and the crowd was not there to give free claps after the delay. I went in thinking they'd slash it like Jack White 2014 or Mumford 2015, turned out they are old men with a black & white camera.
I'd love to be on the sidelines of a headline-worthy band when they go to these massive festivals. The formula for festival success really isn't that hard:
Step 1: Play bangers the entire time, the only slow songs you play have to be massive hits. Step 2: Praise the festival 3-5 times throughout the set. Step 3: Look like you give a shit Step 4: If you are going to rant, don't be a pussy. Give it your all and make sure the crowd knows that energy is going to come through in the next song
Somehow PJ didn't get these instructions, I'll be sure to mail them a copy in 6 years.

Weird, Carrie & Lowell was what turned me into a Sufjan knob-slobber. Before that I had listened to Illinois and liked it, but that was it. Carrie & Lowell blew me away from the opening notes.
Send a copy of this one to Kings of Leon. I am still not 100% sure that they didn't skip the festival altogether and replace themselves with re-skinned animatronics from Chuck E. Cheese.

That's pretty good. Still optimistic but not totally unrealistic. I don't think Primus would play in a tent though. They played the Which Stage last time. But yeah I'd still go to this. Mainly so I could finally see Brand New close out a tent at Bonnaroo.
