Much harder than I thought it would be to narrow down those 10, and I made a point to limit myself to one song per set. For not being much of a lineup on paper, I saw a good amount of really great music this year.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
I'm going to keep it to one per band, except the Superjams. 1. Bullet the Blue Sky- U2- Already a favorite of mine, it also marked the point where they put the band on the video screens and let us back row seaters into the show. 2. Rocky Top- Bobby Osborne and Lillie Mae- You learn that song in the womb living in TN, so seeing the guy who made it famous do it with one of Americana's brightest youngsters was magic. 3. Gonna Make You Sweat- Superjam- It came out of nowhere and by the way Pres Hall threw everything they had at such a ridiculous song that this was going to be one of the good superjams. 4. Burning Down the House- Angelique Kidjo's Remain in Light- My set of the weekend. Everything in it could be here but this was my favorite. 5. Desperate and Depressed- Margo Price- I'm still amazed that "Sometimes my weakness is stronger than me" has never been used in a country song before this one. It's the perfect country one liner. 6. We All Deserve the Light- River Whyless- My find of the weekend. I'd seen them a couple of years ago at Americanafest, but they were unremarkable. They've stepped up their game. 7. ROCK in the USA- Aaron Lee Tasjan and Margo Price- A high point of a very high BGS Superjam. 8. Hey Ya- Chance and everyone at the Superjam- Chance is hard not to like because he looks like he's having a blast wherever he is. Pres Hall had said in the Beacon the day before that they thought they could have a good time collaborating with Chance. They were right. 9. Beatles Medley- Walden- Nice way to ease into Bonnaroo on Thursday. 10. Coast to Coast- Turkuaz- Such a fun band
HM: Most of U2's set. All of Kidjo's set. "Frankie Zombie" from UM would have been there if I had caught more than a minute of it. I don't know Chance enough to pick out individual songs, but I enjoyed the set. "Me and Bobby McGee" from Margo Price.
1. Where the Streets Have No Name - U2 - fave U2 song, arguably one of the best album opens ever, kicking off with the visuals, great stuff. 2. Cowgirl in the Sand (Neil Young cover) - Mandolin Orange - fave Neil song, complete surprise, got out of the 'rejected BG Super covers' during their set, I think they're a really good band in a genre I'm not super into and I have some attachment to them through my gf, but it felt very much like that song was for me, one of my fave Roo moments. 3. Destroyed by Hippie Powers - Car Seat Headrest - Been waiting to see them for awhile, and the extended cow bell jam was a fun time. 4. Aeroplane/Soul to Squeeze - RHCP - felt like both of these were the most visually appealing, and while not my fave songs by them, they're still classic songs and they were fun to see live (both are also only getting played at ~20/35% on this tour so kindddd of the 'exclusives'). 5. Get Up Offa That Thing (w/ Flint Eastwood)/Time Is On My Side (w/ Nicole Atkins) - I thought both of these were great, I thought both the girls did great, and the band was great. 6. Frankie Zombie - Umphrey's McGee I - didn't know about it going in, sold at Thunder Kiss '65, grooved through Relax while sitting up against a tree, hooked at Cigar. 7. Wicked Games (The Weeknd)/400 Lux (Lorde) - got both of my favorite songs by each artist, both visuals were great, walked away with more appreciation for both of them, great b2b sets. 8. Shake - The Head & The Heart - really like this song, and its definitely more fun live, doing the woo-oohs and such. Third time seeing them/this song, but it's still a good time. 9. Waves>Father Stretch My Hands>ULB - Chance - always good to get some Pablo on the farm. 10. Bullet the Blue Sky - Edge killed it, great visuals.
They Put a Body in the Bayou HM, and on Turkuaz, that was just so intense for the first few songs, didn't know when one ended/started and can't name any off my head anyways, but the beginning of that set is definitely among the tops.
*editing now because I'm just realizing I don't have Balance - Future Islands on here. Love that song, glad to hear it.
