I haven't seen a thread on this yet. The festival is in Central Park and usually held in September but I haven't heard of an official date announcement yet.

Do the acts that play this usually play real headlining shows in the area too, or is there a radius clause? Cuz Chance will be in NYC that week for 2 shows, and I think they're both sold out.
Also I feel like Katy Perry will be the big pop act.

I don't think a radius clause applies here. It's a charity event, and outside the main headliner everyone plays 5-10 songs so it's not like your getting a full set.
Stevie Wonder, Green Day, the Killers, the Lumineers and the Chainsmokers will all play this year’s Global Citizen Festival, which takes place 9/23 in New York’s Central Park. Pharrell Williams, Big Sean, Andra Day, and Alessia Cara are also slated to appear as “special guests”
I know that you can earn these tickets from doing Global Citizen volunteer work, but I am unaware of the onsale process. Can you also just buy tickets?

You can buy VIP tickets for tier 2 and tier 3 (Tier 1 is unavailable to us regular folks which sucks because it's right in front of the stage). I'm going back and forth about this. I went in 2012 and 2015 and, while the bands always perform well, it's basically 6 hours of lectures/preaching with a few musical interruptions. Not to say their cause isn't noble and they are definitely touching upon relevant subject matter that the audience might be aware of but after you've been standing for 5 hours, you really don't want to hear one more speaker talk about how x country doesn't have sustainable water taking away from Pearl Jam's set time. Set times usually range from 40 min-hour so it's, kind of, worth it but a lot of effort for minimal pay off.

I was looking at Rihanna's set list from last year and it looked pretty long. How much are the tier 2 and tier 3 usually?

When I went in 2015, Pearl Jam and Beyonce each got roughly an hour. The rest 30-40 min. I'd mainly be going for Green Day and The Killers and...I doubt I'll see a better Green Day set than Barclays earlier in the year (or when I trekked down to NJ to see them at Starland, still bummed I couldn't make the Webster Hall date). I don't know for sure but I think that Rihanna set might have had a lot of medleys/half played songs which is why it looks long but someone who was there can speak to it better than I can.

Yeah, no thanks. Though, in 2015, I did see Michael Chiklis (The Shield) walking around in Ultimate VIP and it might have been worth the $ to get a picture with that dude.
I haven't been in a few years, but I may try to hit this one up. I didn't get to see Stevie the last time he was there, because my friend was cold and tired and wanted to leave. I want to check him off my list.
Do they just randomly draw for this every now and then? I sent a bunch of tweets to get the points or whatever.
They have scheduled drawings - the last one was on 8/28, and the next, I think, is on 9/14. You basically have to re-earn the points between drawings if you weren't picked in the last round.

If you miss out on the drawing its usually pretty easy to still get passes. A few years back someone on here hooked me up with tix they werent using. Last year I bought a pair for $20 the day beforehand.
Well after jumping around six or so festivals to do with the GF this weekend, we are looking at this one so we can be home early Sunday.
I'd almost definitely do VIP. Has anyone done it before? How much closer is Premier VIP as compared to Global VIP?
Worth it?
I'd 100% recommend the VIP. While you can still get closer in the GA than VIP, i'd be such a hassle. For a decent spot in GA you'd need to get there like 5 hours before the show starts and wait on line FOREVER. And once you get in your bathroom options are limited. At least with VIP you can just stroll right in, no long lines to wait on, and the spot is decent enough.
The last time I went to this in 2015 I got to central park at 1pm and didn't get into the field until after 4pm. I'd pay $150 just to avoid that.
EDIT: Sorry, I just realized you weren't asking the difference between VIP and GA, but premium vs. global. Whichever is the more expensive one gets you maybe 15 yards closer to the stage. Other than that I don't know what other differences there are in amenities.

Thanks. That is helpful. Will probably do the closer Premier as it's only $20 more of so on StubHub. I don't think there is a difference in the swag you get. Now to find a reasonably priced place to stay.
Well we're officially in for this. Got an Airbnb for Friday and Saturday in East Midtown. My girlfriends brother is coming with us to watch the baby and we may even bring him to the fest if we feel adventurous. We're doing the Global VIP. Got a great deal on one ticket and scouring for some more.
If anyone knows of any good, reasonably priced shows in Manhattan on Friday night, let me know. I have been scouring Pollstar and not a ton that catches my fancy.

Mac DeMarco's playing Radio City and I think tickets are like $30ish and still on sale. If he's not your cup of tea I'd probably recommend just looking at whoever's playing the small clubs like Mercury Lounge, which will never be more than $10-15

Thanks! I dig Mac but the girlfriend was not impressed with the streams we have watched so may have a tough time talking her into it. I was hoping for some jam stuff but there doesn't seem to be anything of note which is kind of odd with so many artists in town for Brooklyn Comes Alive that weekend. Even American Beauty has Mo Lowda and the Humble which isn't really jam stuff. But I am open to anything. I am going to keep my eyes out and also ask the GF about Mac.

Does anyone recall how long the headliner usually gets? And if there will be speaker(s) between Greenday and SW? Trying to judge how much of Greenday I will see if I need to leave at 8:00

Past headliner sets on Youtube seem to be just over an hour.
Fun day. Green Day still puts on a hell of a show. Chainsmokers blow. Stevie and Pharrell was a pretty good show and the security guy we had been hanging next to at the Global/Premiere VIP barrier let us in to Premiere VIP so we got pretty close. Killers and Lumineers were both solid. Andra Day, while a little slow tempo, was awesome and her band rocked. The crowd was big. Global VIP was oversold. But the fest was mostly well run.
