I don't think I know a single Janet Jackson song, tbh
To be clear, that's probably more my fault than hers, but take that anecdotally to show just how unfamiliar millenials are with her work
And millennials we’re tweeting out “who the fuck is Paul McCartney” or whatever when he turned up with Kanye. A) There’s always gonna be some anecdotal person who has not heard of any classic artist and B) maybe that’s a reason *for* a bigger pool of critically acclaimed artists headlining festivals rather than against
I'll jump into "millennial who doesn't recognize Janet Jackson songs or the fact that she's popular" pool. There is a huge difference between that and being an obnoxious young person saying "ew who TF is Paul/Bruce/Stevie".
I don't think most (or any) of the people I go to Pano with, which is like 10 people, will like/care about this booking. Which I think means something since to this point we're their target (20-somethings who like alternative/indie/critically-acclaimed music).
I think that you guys are giving Launchy too much crap. If its actually Janet Jackson, shes only headlined one festival before, Essence Fest. Saying that she would be unexpected is fair, the same way that Missy Elliot was unexpected last year at FYF

Woah I just checked out Janet's wiki page and I totally didn't realize how many top 10 songs she had. 23 songs in the billboard top 10, with 10 of those being number one singles.

For a second I thought that was an American Psycho quote.. Then I realized that was Whitney Houston.

Panorama's target audience has been all over the map, given that they booked DJ Khaled, Major Lazer, and Flosstradamus in their first year.
But yeah, JJ is a legacy pop act who will probably headline unopposed... I don't see how that will contribute to Pano increasing their ticket sales.

Ive mentioned this before but it really doesnt seem like Goldenvoice is super invested in making this a very profitable festival, instead wanting to create something that will appeal to the NYC music scene and NYC music critics.
If this isn't sarcasm, its easily one of the worst posts I've ever seen on this forum.
Jesus
I must have missed the recent thinkpiece in favor of reappraising her work. My experience with her music may be limited, but her big tracks came across as superficial and annoying.
Please don't insult me by implying that I read music journalism

Terrible booking if it’s Janet Jackson. Not that she is a bad performer but I just cannot see how they think this would push tickets. She didn’t sell out the local venues (smaller arenas) with her most recent tour and it’s very hard to argue that she’s relevant with this festival’s demo. I can’t see her fanbase coming out in droves for this either.
It’s a bit different than someone like Madonna. Yes, Janet may have had a record number of #1’s back in the day but that’s a poor statistic when talking about music standing the test of time in 2018. Hers just doesn’t for the most part, subjectively and objectivelt based on streaming, sales, etc. Take someone like Madonna for example, even the younger crowd would know her material from throughout the years. With Janet what songs really stand out as relevant today?
I really hope they aren’t banking on her to sell this. If they are then this year will be DOA.

Maybe it's just me, but if someone has expectations of who might headline Panorama and Janet Jackson didn't really fit with those, that's perfectly understandable for reasons that don't make them a racist or a lady-hater.
I feel like this is just another case of folks getting up in arms because they don't like Launch. Like they have to disagree with it because he said it. No one else is allowed to agree with him, either.
With talk of these prehistoric headliners and bans on phones at concerts, it sounds like the music industry is declaring war on millenials. Who will stand up to this tyranny?
I love how people bitch about every festival booking the same headliners like Muse, Eminem, The Killers and Jack White and now are complaining about a festival potential booking a unique act like Janet Jackson. You can’t have it both ways.
