Anyone else see when Knox Fortune brought out Chance for All Night? I was working near the Merch tent but got a video. People just started booking it to That Tent when Knox restarted the song after playing it during a cover of Everybody Wants to Rule the World.
Bonnaroo definitely took a chance with putting him as a pre-headliner and it totally paid off as they were probably the best show i’ve seen at Roo. The new song was very Stevie Wonder vibes. Future fest lineups are in good hands with him as a headlining option.

Bonnaroo is going to look smart when he's headlining festivals in the next few years.

I'm probably in a small minority, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the two times I have seen him/them live in the past. It was more polished, and I'm not hating specifically on that alone. But the first time I saw them was at Buku a few years back, and they were sort of new to the game then. It was high energy but less song-y. Then I saw him a year or two later at Voodoo, and it was high entertainment and high energy. Some of the Bonnaroo show was, but a lot of it was really song-oriented. I love the band, and he's a great drummer. He's also a good rapper. I just personally prefer the rawer versions of them I saw in the past to what they have become. That's not a complete knock or anything - just personal preference.
It was wild on tv. The crowd knew most of it. Too much left side/right side/middle section stuff over and over. But it looked extremely fun for those in attendance.

bruh you watched it online lmao
I know. And I don't expect things to translate the same. Killers and Muse translated wonderfully on tv for this year. But A.P&TFN didn't so much for me. I didn't come out and say I thought they sucked or anything. A lot of it was fairly technical jazz stuff that I liked a lot. But it just seemed that the direction of what they're doing live is more R&B'ish than the other shows.
Had a blast this year. Going to post my thoughts about the festival and the acts I saw.
Shows:
Frenship- decent first show. Got me dancing but nothing special.
Chase Atlantic - wasn’t really into this too much. I ended up just sitting in the back on my phone. My friends seemed to enjoy it though. He kinda sounded like a shitty weeknd.
Spafford - amazing! I only knew beautiful day going in and was blown away by this show. I wish they got a longer set because 1 hour didn’t feel like enough.
Space jesus - not really my type of music. Wasn’t terrible though.
PPPP - really really good. Super dancey and they brought out some guys from the revivalists. The singer was kinda weird but it was a good show.
Everything everything - also really good. The lead singer was even more impressive live than I was expecting. Wish they got an hour.
Japanese breakfast - they started late but once they got going it was a really fun show. The lead singer is really talented.
Paramore - fun set. Hayley Williams is a great front woman. If I enjoyed their music a little bit more I could see this being one of my favorite sets.
The revivalists - this had to be the biggest surprise of the weekend for me. I went in only knowing wish I knew you and turned into a fan. The lead singer talked a little bit too much for me (nothing that ruined the set tho).
Rufus du sol - one of my most anticipated sets and I was not disappointed. I danced so hard I almost over heated.
Muse - fantastic as always. I felt like they were slept on this year so I’m glad they killed it.
Bassnectar - it was fine. I just watched from the back.
Virtual self - flat out amazing. The production and visuals were next level. The music also kept me moving for the whole set. It left me so tired I called it a night after it ended.
Pond - they swept me off my feet. Been a fan since I discovered them here and their show took it to the next level.
CHIC - I feel bad for anyone that missed this set. It was probably the most wholesome show I’ve ever seen. Not to mention everyone was dancing. Wish the set was better attended.
Sylvan esso - too packed to really get close and get a good gage on the show. Sounded pretty decent though.
Paak - best set of the weekend. I knew he was going to be good but not THAT good. He is an amazing performer and the free nationals is the best backing backing band you could ask for.
Bon Iver 1 - flat out amazing. He was highly anticipated for me and he delivered.
Bon Iver 2 - wasn’t as good as the first set but still pretty good. Probably about 60% of the crowd left before it was over which was disappointing. I enjoyed all of the guests expect the girl from sylvan esso. While I liked the set, I kinda felt like this was a missed opportunity to have a truly legendary second set.
STS9 - really good after being at Bon Iver for 3 hours. I danced my ass off.
Kaskade sunrise set - I thought this was really fun. Nothing mind blowing but good music to dance to while the sun came up.
Dua lipa - shit
Moon taxi - not bad but kinda cheesy and uninteresting.
Future - I like a lot of futures songs but this set was hella disappointing. He barely sang any of his songs and instead commented on the sides of the crowd for a full hour.
Thundercat - even better than when I saw him at calling. I could tell he really vibed with the crowd. Really want to see him for a third time.
Overall festival comments:
- the festival was definitely a lot more crowded. For the most part everything was fine. My only complaint was the toilets between what and which because they were an absolute cluster fuck. People were cramming into the line, entering the exit, and vandalizing the whole place. I really hope they can improve the flow of it next year.
- the barns were pretty decent. I really only spent any real time in the house of yes.
- I think roo took a step in the right direction this year. The lineup improved, the experience improved, and security was more lax. I really hope they can continue this upward trend next year.
- police presence in the campgrounds seemed increased. The camp next to us got busted and the police kept coming back around after that.
- I skipped 2/3 headliners with no regret.
- crowds were the same as always. Everyone was super nice and I didn’t have a bad experience all weekend.
Overall:
This was my favorite roo yet (3rd year) and I’m definitely going again next year if the lineup is on par with this year.
Top 5:
1. Paak 2. CHIC 3. Muse 4. Virtual self 5. Rufus du sol
The revivalists - this had to be the biggest surprise of the weekend for me. I went in only knowing wish I knew you and turned into a fan. The lead singer talked a little bit too much for me (nothing that ruined the set tho).
their studio singles definitely have that overproduced adult contemporary vibe, but they always crush it live. very talented musicians and great type 1 jamming. they destroyed ole' cafe where in 2012.
- Best sets I saw were Rufus Du Sol, Chic, Glitch Mob, Muse, The Regrettes, and STS9.
- The new wooden platforms they put throughout Centeroo were a nice touch to lay down on in the shade.
- Kalliope's new spot was perfect, zero sound bleed into the campground and it helped liven up that previously dead corner.
- Security getting into Centeroo was a joke, they never once checked anyones pockets or bags, other than simply feeling it.
- The Plaza activities were a great addition, the Cage secret show on Thurs was great, as well as the Sparkle City pre party in The Ville on Wed night. House of Yes was really fum each morning from 4-5am, the DJs in there were great.

were they strict about camelbaks/type of backpack? I got an email about what sort of bags they were going to allow into centeroo this year and it seemed pretty restrictive.

They allowed all camelbaks it seemed. They def didnt allow non-clear backpacks, but any other bag they were very lax on checking.

For as much shit that I have given Roo over the last few years, the amount of improvements to the farm since I've been going in 2013 are worthy of shouting out again.
If you were to give the Bonnaroo 2013 attendees the following list of ammenities, they would all orgasm at once.
- Good tasting water / no more egg water
- Perfect cell service all weekend + plentiful charging stations in campgrounds
- Flushable, reasonably clean toilets. I will never forget seeing a portalet in 2013 where the mountain of shit actually peaked far above the seat.
- The ability to camp to the side of your car as opposed to in front of it.
- completely enjoyable shower experience with no time limit
- Less bulky sound tower at the What Stage
- Better sound quality on the which stage
- What/Which bridge
- Screens at the tents and now two screens at which
- An overwhelming increase in campground activities
- introduction of two legitimately cool immersive areas in The Grove and Bacardi Oasis
- The elimination of BFE pod 1? I don't think GA folks can get placed there anymore. That shit was awful.
The biggest areas for improvement outside of the music and set times would be for them to consistently add more shade and art installations in centeroo. I got in to roo after only 1 hour this year and feel like I didn't hear quite as many horror stories. They could probably just quadruple the amount of toll booths at every entrance and problem would go away.
Now if only we had the lineup and set times of 2013. As for the music...
- Justin Jay - A little sloppy but overall fun set. Was happy to see a full band on stage. He seemed to be playing everywhere this weekend, including the house of yes last night.
- Durand Jones - First really good show of the weekend for me
- Spafford - They were great. Should have had a longer set
- Everything Everything - Awesome. Lead singer was so impressive live. This was a major highlight. They needed another 30 minutes.
- Alex Lahey - This was pretty good. Didn't quite meet my expectations. Stage presence was kinda weak.
- Trombone Shorty - I do not blame Pondo for calling this the set of weekend. I saw him in 2013 but this was some next level shit.
- Denzel Curry - crazy packed. It looked fucking wild, but I was too far away to feel like I was a part of it. In hindsight, I think I still would have went to Trombone Shorty.
- T-Pain - Largest That Tent crowd I've ever seen. I had the style of fun I was hoping to have at Future. I would have never went if he conflicted with anything of importance to me.
- Rufus Du Sol - after seeing the crowds for the previous two sets, I got nervous and went up front right after t pain. Thank jeebus for Playboi Carti playing after t pain and khalid playing during Rufus. I was right up front with ny whole squad and they delivered cover to cover.
- Muse - Agree with what everyone has said
- Pond - I thought they were a little better at Shaky last year, but that is no insult. Giant Tortoise is such a banger live.
- Chic - Not much to add. Reminded me of how many people were dancing to Angelique Kidjo last year.
- Sylvan Esso - It was impossible to get a good spot after seeing Chic. Thankfully, That Tent came through with some quality sound so I was able to enjoy the show from far back while watching the screen. I'm sure everyone on this board knows how Sylvan Esso shows work. I think they are a great option as kinda festival undercard filler. Can't imagine anyone leaving a show of theirs dissapointed.
Anderson Paak - Agree with everything said. Could have benefitted from 15 extra minutes to do Room In Here and the Dr. Dre tributes he usually does. He killed it. The Roots better watch their back as the best live hiphop band.
Bon Iver 1 - Just amazing. Could have benefitted from more time considering what the second set ended up being. Show of the weekend regardless. Which stage sounds was great for this. I thought the stage was going to explode during the extended section of Creature Fear. Fucking awesome.
Eminem - surprise of the weekend for me. I was always skeptical of the inforoo consensus on him. It's almost like a bad meme has infected everyones thoughts about Eminem. There was not an excess of backing track vocals being played and his band was good. He is probably the greatest technical lyricist of all time and he rapped said lyrics pretty admirably. I just wish he would accept that he is a legend of the past and leaned more heavily on older material. Too much modern crap while tons of classics were left on the table. Replace the ten worst songs with Forgot About Dre, Whats the Difference, Rock Bottom, Guilty Conscious, Infinite, If I Had, Dead Wrong, Purple Pills, Renegade, Role Model... and you're looking at my favorite set of the weekend.
Bon Iver 2 - I hope I didn't taint anyone's view of the show. I overhyped this in my head thinking it would end up being a legendary ln which set, and that would have required more than 2 BI album songs for me. A quality unique set regardless.
Ikebe Shakedown - Good set, but I think Trombone Shorty's greatness ruined this set for me in an odd way.
Broken Social Scene - this was really good. So many damn musicians on stage. Happy with my conflict choice. Jungle would not have been able to top my 2015 experience with them anyways, and I was picturing GoGo Penguin being so dead to where it'd be awkward.
Future - Ballsack
Alt J - Second biggest surprise behind Eminem. I think I've gone from overrating them at first, to underrating them for years to a happy middle now. Their sound and light show was on point. Awesome Wave was a great album and the second album had a couple choice bangers. Somehow the two or three new songs they played sounded great. Idgi. They are also the anti-Eminem in a sense that they seem to understand which of their songs are good. Played almost all of the first album, and few good ones from the second and only a couple from the new one. Matilda was a highlight for me.
Killers - They played songs that I feel no connection to very well. Never been a big fan, but enjoyed the show as much as I could.
1. BI1 2. Paak 3. Muse 4. Rufus 5. Chic 6. Trombone Shorty 7. Pond 8. Broken Social Scene 9. Eminem 10. Everything Everything 11. Alt J 12. Sylvan Esso
Overall it was another great Roo. Prob my 3rd or 4th favorite of the 6 I've been to.
Re-energizing Thursday with better bands (Everything Everything, Pond, Moses), lengthening set times for artists that could greatly benefit from it, and a better Sunday headliner would have taken this year up a couple more notches.

I was wondering why all these people that don't like Future went to his set, now I realize there was like nothing else going on. The little bit of his set I saw at Coachella was good.

You guys are getting me excited for next year's Roo, and I appreciate that. Also, this might be kind of weird to say because having good tasting water and clean flushable toilets are definitely objective improvements to the Bonnaroo experience, but the nostalgic part of me feels like I'm gonna miss the egg water and shitty portos. I have strong memories attached to them from my early Roos.

I was riding out a rough one from the NIN night in 09 when I had to visit a porto near one of the griswald camps. The one that I managed to get into (they were all destroyed, cleaning was much less frequent) was off its axis, or maybe I was, but regardless I felt the entire time like my porto was sinking backwards into the woods.
It makes me sad to think that this experience won't continue on for future generations.

The Grand Ole Opry was actually pretty cool
More on that please. Was it essentially the same as the Bluegrass Situation just without Ed Helms?
