This is kinda my issue with the JT rumor, is he the “#1” on the poster next year? Usually there’s a big name that’s rare or unique. JT is undoubtedly a big name, but getting him on the tail end of a tour off a shitty album with a bunch of winter California and SW dates isn’t all that special. It doesn’t have the newsworth factor of GnR, OutKast, or a Beyonce one off. Even AC/DC was launching a tour in 2015. It also seems unlikely that he’s gonna drop another album, and less likely that if he did it’d be any better than his last album.
So if JT is on the poster, that means there will be a real “wow” #1, or a lame set of headliners. But the pool of headliners that are more newsworthy than him is small. Lame set of headliners or he won’t be there at all make more sense to me.
I'd say it's special in the fact that he hasn't played a big multigenre festival in the States before. It's a step-down from Bey, but a really unique grab regardless.
Pop-wise you can't top Beyonce. Rock-wise you can't top a GNR reunion. There isn't a headliner-level electronic artist that is worth a damn. And I can't think of any midcard-type act, regardless of genre, that is ready to make the jump.
The only possible exciting headliner-level reunion is R.E.M.
I feel like we're in for a long season of mostly underwhelming headliners across all festivals.
if daft punk ever decide to do another live show/tour, I think they'd turn down coachella. I'm in the "they'll never do the same thing twice camp"

I believe the two members attend as fans every year, plus they debuted "Get Lucky" at Coachella in 2013. GV would toss them an ungodly amount of money to play.

I believe they live in LA full time now. Their 2006 show is regarded as one biggest music moments ever, I can understand them wanting to leave it be and not trying to top it. Plus I'm sure they get offered an ungodly amount of money every year from every major festival.

One thing about JT that just occurred to me is that the booking makes a lot more sense if you assume he was scheduled for this year and then got bumped by Beyoncé. He was routed in the area during Coachella and everything. Still kind of a let down IMO but I get it now.

I feel like there is so much hype for a Daft Punk Coachella show that it would just be dangerous at this point. There wouldn’t be anyone at any other stage assuming they tried to counter-program.

I feel like I've heard that that was the case somewhere, maybe this board.

Can’t remember if it was here, the boards, or Reddit, but I heard it as well.

I feel like it wouldn’t though. It would be the most hyped concert ever by inforoo types, but do the kids care about daft punk?

Feel like Daft Punk’s popularity might transcend past inforoo a fair bit.

My sisters in elementary school, my sister in high school, my brother who listens to trap rap exclusively, and my late 40s country lovin’ parents all love daft punk. I’d say they’re pretty well known and have a ton of crossover appeal.

There are plenty of fest goers of all ages on and off these boards who would be interested in a Daft Punk comeback. This wouldn’t be a situation like when LCD trolled its own fans into a reunion show. It would be one in incredibly high demand.

Yea, 100% they’d have a big crowd, but I reckon there were more Beyoncé campers this year than there would be for a hypothetical daft punk show. I don’t think it’d be borderline dangerous.

So, I've got no idea where else to post about this article.. But the first show that came in mind was Coachella so..
"Haim fired their agent after a male artist was paid significantly more than them for a festival show" LINK
“We had been told that our fee was very low because you played at the festival in the hope you’d get played on the radio,” Danielle Haim recalled. ”We didn’t think twice about it, but we later found out that someone was getting paid 10 times more than us. And because of that we fired our agent.”

My total guess is that they made ~$40k and found out Jamiroquai made ~$400k (per the boardie with inside connections on the Coachella boards).
Either way, it had to be a festival their booking agent was willing to take a discount for them to play, while the festival paid up for a rare act, and Coachella and Jamiroquai check the boxes. I could see a booking agent saying playing in front of Beyonce on the main stage is worth taking a huge pay cut.

Curious if this compared to say The Weeknd or Eminem as well.

I honestly doubt this was about Coachella. They've played it a bunch, I doubt they would be caught off guard by their fee there. Plus isn't Coachella notorious for paying really well?
Somewhat related: I have a friend that worked for Bunbury festival around 2014, and he told me one day his boss came in fuming because HAIM wanted something like 120k to perform lol. I'm sure they were heavily upcharging for some reason, still kinda funny.
Update on the HAIM story, I've read that the other band would've been.. Muse and the festival Rock In Lisboa in June. Which is just laughable if you think you don't earn enough if you compare yourself to a band like them.

This brings up my previous point: did they expect to get paid as much as a headliner? If true, this seems like a cheap way to virtue signal and screw their booking manager over.

Must be tough when your best friend clears 7 or 8 figures a show
I think it makes sense to have happened at Coachella more. Their agent probably took a discount to be a sub (they definitely weren't big enough to sub) and then someone like Jamiroquai making a bunch for such a rare show makes sense too.

How about we give them a little credit and assume they weren’t expecting to make as much money as a headliner billed a few spots ahead of them.

they actually said that in the statement. Weren't made about getting paid less but that it was a tenth of what the "male act" made.
