Awful opinions. Florence is basically the second coming of Annie Lennox. Only I would argue she has already surpassed Lennox. She is unquestionably nothing but pure raw talent. Doesnt need to rely on production to have a live performance that shakes the earth with nothing but her voice. She is a legend in her prime, that people will be listening to and other artists will be inspired by for decades. Nothing "boring" about that and any festival that books her is lucky.

Essence isnt really a festival. Its a stadium show specifically targeting middle aged black women. Of course Janet Jackson is going to do well there. But that audience isnt showing up to stand in the middle of a field in July.
Edit: I’m lying. As far as headliners go she’s pretty damn basic. It wouldn’t feel so bad if she weren’t grouped with two other meh acts. Being that she’s in a similar spot globally as The xx maybe it won’t happen though.

She's selling worse than Janet's tour last year, with very strong openers. Theres a fair question about the age demographic difference of who is trying to go to a music festival, but idk. People still show up for Billy Joel at festivals.

JT + Gambino + [Anyone other than a real home run] = still one of the worst 3 combos in Coachella history, maybe the worst. I'd have to be pretty impressed with the last one to think they'll be pace setters in the headliner wars for 2019
I just think it's funny when people are like "what about the female headliners" and then shit on every female headliner that isn't Beyonce.
Is that really what I’m doing? I very much wish they hadn’t gone with an almost washed up white male as their pop headliner, but they did.
Eh. I don't know. I don't know that you in particular have decried the dearth of female headliners. And I don't know which female headliners you would like to see. So, in that way, I'm probably arguing with a strawman here.
I also am underwhelmed by the two names we have, and it's probably a consequence of Beyonce cancelling in 17 that we have JT in 19 and not 18, which kinda sucks. He might have felt like a big deal this year, coming off the Super Bowl and all that.
I think Florence is just as viable as Gambino. Or rather, if she had a viral video as huge as This is America, she certainly would be. That video managed to elevate Glover from sub to headliner, which is, again, a little bit disappointing. It's a great song and a great video, but without that sole thing, he'd still be a sub, I think. Not crazy about that.
I don’t even really care much for Beyoncé’s music, but she’s fucking Beyoncé. I get it. Even if Timberlake is the response to that (it’s still not for me), she’s still a more newsworthy set.
I would prefer Metallica over most acts at this point. I’m not in here saying woman or bust, I was merely pointing out what I think they might do. Florence is someone who could potentially fill that role. None of that has anything to do with her being kind of boring.
Regardless of the headliners, I'm still pretty sure this is gonna be the best NA lineup next year.
Nah. My faith in the lineup has gotten pretty shook. Last year's top 9 was pretty terrible outside of Beyonce, Timberlake is a huge mis-calculation, and Gambino does nothing for me (I told some friends this weekend he was a rumored headliner and people couldn't believe it - outside of us message board nerds and people who track stuff consistently, he's a surprising Coachella headliner).
Outside of a couple surprise interesting bookings, maybe getting Aphex, maybe getting a couple main stage rock shows (if we're not getting a headliner can we at least get Shakes? VW? YYYs? final National show of this tour?) my expectations are getting very low for next year. The kids have won.
