I'd just about lock Paak into getting a Tyler type promotion. Not sure if he'll be billed third on main stage or 4th/5th with a big outdoor slot, but pretty sure he'll be there and featured.
I'm at a loss with what they're going to do with rap this year. All the big projects/releases seem to be coming out this summer/fall (Gambino's album, Astroworld, Chance releasing new music, Scorpion, J Cole had a new record, etc.). If Gambino really is a headliner, I'm not sure I see them booking a rap sub like J Cole or Travis Scott - that's never happened before where we have a rap sub in a year with a rap HL. I'd actually say ASAP Rocky is a decent choice for 3rd-4th on his day to pair with Gambino (like Kendrick/Future in 2017) if Gambino really is headlining, as I'm not sure they'd invest in a rap sub.

I put ASAP Mob on mocks just because Testing was too far away to justify Rocky taking a huge spot imo. Testing was also very hit or miss with a lot of listeners. It’s my favorite project of his because I appreciate the direction, but it’s also not his strongest work. Just needs to work at it.

Honestly the more I think about it the more I start to think that the next time we see Rocky he’ll be a headliner. What if GV passes him until the next album? If it does well or produces enough hype he might just be a solid selection for a Rap headliner.

Man, that whole Testing roll out got me about as hyped as I could be for a Rocky release and I still think it's one of his best to date. Dude is ready for the big stage already.
I still need to listen to it; I enjoyed his last album. Been too busy listening to boring techno and house.
It's probably my favorite Rocky album. It's gotten a lot of criticism for being style over substance but I feel that's how Rocky has always been. He just kind of adds his own flair to stuff he's influenced by. For this album you can tell he's been listening to Frank Ocean/Playboi Carti/Grime music/Psych Pop which I think resulted in something more interesting than when he was mostly influenced by Skrillex and Houston rap.
I honestly don’t get how he hasn’t blown up beyond some of his peers at this point. He puts out such consistent material. He would seem like a legit star on that stage to me and could hold is own before a more established act. Maybe that’s the kind of push he needs this year.

The album was pretty bad for me, I would still probably see him(depending who else is playing), but mostly to see his older stuff
If Paak has a big album, then he could sub. I wouldn't be so sure of it before, but with sza subbing then ya
2018 essentially reset the who can / can't sub market, but maybe that's because we had massive headliners.
There is nothing justifiable about HAIM subbing. Not huge Spotify listeners, dud of an album, not touring arenas, no huge radio smashes, etc. Third on their day at Primavera Sound. So it sounds like anything's on the table if that happened.
So historically, I'd say Paak subbing is unlikely, but now who knows.

I just feel like people that are bigger than him have radio play. Rocky hasn't really had a hit since F*cking Problems in 2013. He's still one of the biggest names in rap IMO.

Yeah that’s a good point. Seems like his stuff is mainstream enough, but I don’t listen to the radio so I wouldn’t really know. His name rarely comes up with my students so that would explain it. A push from a fest like this could help bridge the gap with post-millinneals. He just needs the spotlight at this point.
I do appreciate that he moved away from the Skrillex stuff and got more experimental here. His last album was the most commercial to date and also my least favorite. This one is a real return to form.

Lord Pretty Flacko Jodye 2 and now Praise the Lord. Also had Asap Forever, but not the biggest fan of the last two

Rocky falls into that same category as Tyler, been putting out albums since forever but never become a headliner. Even though his disco < Tyler's imo. Tyler's Flowerboy was an insane succes but Testing..? Not so much. I'd see festivals pushing him into a #3/4 spot a la Travis Scott has been put on this last year tho..

Rocky was 4th name on 2nd row in 2016(5th name overall if including Headliner)
He can't go much higher imo. If he subs, that would be awful/weak. If he is the 3rd or even 4th name overall, then he didn't move much, but he can get to main stage if he wants.
Or maybe wait for another album, hope its successful, and then sub? He can never headline
Only rappers/r&b left to headline(who have yet to): Chance The Rapper, Frank Ocean, and Gambino
Not sure who is next up honestly. I can see Kanye, Drake, and Kdot in next 5+ years making a comeback
J Cole is/was on the cusp, but not sure if he will ever make it

Where's the R.E.M. thing coming from? They've gone their mostly-separate ways, Buck/(sometimes Mills) busy with several other bands that I personally find equally or more interesting, Stipe busy with more famous friends (Courtney, Thom, etc.) who, like him, seem as or more interested in the art world than music these days, though he's finally dipped a toe into solo work recently. If they do have any desire to play together again, and at least some of them might, Coachella would be something of a natural choice given the firm disinterest of more than one and probably several members in ever touring again, and could help raise funds for medical bills of friend/sideman Scott McCaughey, a benefit for whom Berry joined a few months back, but even if Gen X'ers aren't quite in Desert Trip territory yet, we're aging out of the festival's demographic more rapidly every year, and I don't see how they do LA and not at least NY and/or their GA diaspora (Roo?).
Really? I am a Travis fan, may even see him this weekend at Hard Summer, but I don't know if he should be a headliner. Is his sound wide enough? It probably is since he gets a lot of views/streams. But he isn't a normal rapper and he really yells/hypes up crowd more than singing
Rocky Discog >>> Tyler Discog and Testing > Flower Boy imo
Tyler has more appeal though for sure.
I wouldn’t go that far. Rocky has the better discog, but I give the latest album contest to Tyler. Complete maturation from him. I feel like he found his stride and doesn’t need the corny style that he got famous for with OF. It’s funny because Rocky is maturing and pursuing more artistic routes like Tyler and they’re like bffs now. It’s honestly insane how similar they are.
They did just release a single together right? Album together -> Headline together?

Nowhere in particular. There was a lot of smoke for Lolla '17 but that obviously didn't happen. It seems mutually beneficial as Coachella is probably the U.S. fest most equipped to reunite them and it provides them a one-time (er, two-time) payday they couldn't get anywhere else. Would be surprising if this, The White Stripes, Oasis, and other "it'll happen at some point" reunions don't happen in the next few years (wouldn't could on Smiths, Talking Heads, Zeppelin).
Also if JT/CG are the other two headliners it makes sense that the third headliner would probably be a large rock act. Would be pretty shocked if they go two years without a rock headliner and so it's pretty much throwing darts at the board guessing the rock name.
Flower Boy was forgettable for me outside of a few tracks. Im always pleasantly surprised when I return to Testing. I was big on Tyler early on, but his stuff hasn’t aged as well imo and A$AP’s first couple of albums had stacked tracklists. Tyler has matured and that’s great but Rocky is back to doing a better version of the same. I just feel like his work really hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves.
Like I was always confused as to why Chance blew up and Rocky didn’t. Does Chance get radio play? The best things he’s done are religious or with Kanye. I don’t know much about Travis Scott, but as a former Astro World attendee I was hoping for more depth there.
