Where's the R.E.M. thing coming from? They've gone their mostly-separate ways, Buck/(sometimes Mills) busy with several other bands that I personally find equally or more interesting, Stipe busy with more famous friends (Courtney, Thom, etc.) who, like him, seem as or more interested in the art world than music these days, though he's finally dipped a toe into solo work recently. If they do have any desire to play together again, and at least some of them might, Coachella would be something of a natural choice given the firm disinterest of more than one and probably several members in ever touring again, and could help raise funds for medical bills of friend/sideman Scott McCaughey, a benefit for whom Berry joined a few months back, but even if Gen X'ers aren't quite in Desert Trip territory yet, we're aging out of the festival's demographic more rapidly every year, and I don't see how they do LA and not at least NY and/or their GA diaspora (Roo?).
Nowhere in particular. There was a lot of smoke for Lolla '17 but that obviously didn't happen. It seems mutually beneficial as Coachella is probably the U.S. fest most equipped to reunite them and it provides them a one-time (er, two-time) payday they couldn't get anywhere else. Would be surprising if this, The White Stripes, Oasis, and other "it'll happen at some point" reunions don't happen in the next few years (wouldn't could on Smiths, Talking Heads, Zeppelin).
Also if JT/CG are the other two headliners it makes sense that the third headliner would probably be a large rock act. Would be pretty shocked if they go two years without a rock headliner and so it's pretty much throwing darts at the board guessing the rock name.
JT and Gambino would be so boring imo, Gambino will be everywhere. Kids See Ghosts or Frank Ocean cmon
Possible future headliners: Frank Ocean Chance The Rapper Travis Scott Jay Z lolz
Had there chance but aren't going to get higher than sub: Future J Cole A$ap Rocky Big Sean Migos? (we pretty much reached peak trap) Rae Sremmurd
Going the Tyler route and never headline: Vince Staples Joey Bada$$ YG? Vic Mensa Young Thug Carti
Where does Post Malone and Cardi B fit on these lists? If Logic has another big album I could see him being in the discussion perhaps. X could’ve gotten there too if it wasn’t for his shady past and the fact that he’s dead.

The six years between their 2007 and 2013 headlining appearances would be the same as the six between 2013 and 2019, and their catalog is large enough that they could easily go again, especially with new material.

Even with Frusciante I’d set them right next to The Killers as artists that can headline only if the artist(s) [insert festival] really wants ends up not working out.

Are we gonna pretend that a live performance is a drastic improvement because of one member’s return? Frusciante being added is not the same as Slash joining the lineup. Realistically it only matters for the studio work.
I’ll even add that most people that listen to RHCP don’t know him or care to know him. To most nothing happened to RHCP.

If Brandon Flowers can do it as a lone Killer than RHCP can do it without Frusciante. This is true.
I was just thinking about how RHCP filling in for the Stones in 2013 is a lot like The Killers getting the call to fill in for other, better bands at recent fests

At least Green Day isn’t the completely crusted over flakes dropping to the bottom of the bucket. There is still a bit of moisture in the half spoon serving

Are we sure about that? Anyone seen them live lately?

Actually I saw them at the Rose Bowl. Ive seen all three bands and think Green Day was the best live performance of the bunch. They know how to curate a setlist around their new material much better than the others.

The idea isn't predicated solely on Frusciante. They could headline with or without him.
Incidentally, the Rolling Stones will tour in North America in 2019. Though the LA dates will probably be at the Forum.
Where's this coming from?
Dunno his source but I remember reading on a Stones forum somewhere that they were doing a US leg in 2019. I also heard they were asked to play but they are probably asked every year so that may not mean much. I know Launchpad already said to not expect them but AEG did promote their UK tour.
I hate to be specific, but it really bothers me that people want a White Stripes reunion. Jack White solo is the better option and we got him already.
I very much disagree but I don’t think a White Stripes reunion will happen. Jack is trying to rewrite the White Stripes narrative and a reunion would go against his revisionism.
I’ll take a Raconteurs sub-headliner spot though please and thank you

They've had a long relationship with AEG in the US and elsewhere, but it sounds like the next US tour may be through another party.
