Upvotes if you agree, down if you dont.....but not the greatest year for acl? Itll be my first time here and have always heard great things but besides a handful of shows idk if its worth the VAST amount of money ive spent on tickets, plane tickets, ridiculously overpriced hotel and rental car.
I kinda agree that I wasn't blown away by this fest, but I've seen 25 bands over three days, ate great food thanks to this being in Austin so I think I am fine with it.
This also comes from a person that hadn't been to many concerts this year, so I might be biased.

It's been a great year but I don't think anything will ever top 2013 with Depeche Mode, The Cure, Atoms for Peace, QOTSA, Kendrick, Arctic Monkeys, Grimes, The National. That year was stacked and the weather dropping during The Cure set was something I'd never forget.
2013 lineup was fine. But due to the rain, we only got 2/3rds of the event that year. I made it to the free Atoms for Peace show, but it wasn't the same as being at the festival. Muse was also there and probably the best show I saw that weekend.

I forgot about the rain on the second weekend. Only made it to the first weekend but Muse was pretty great.
Agreed. Correct me if I’m wrong but I didn’t think ACL went to two weekends until 2014, right? I remember the rain leaving at the end of The Cure and then ending up going watch The Saints lose to New England at Shoal Creek that Sunday. I’ll never forget actually appreciating Coach Belechick stepping on our throats that game and giving us a taste of our own medicine.

It was definitely two weekends in 2013. I believe that was the first year it started. I went for the entire first weekend and remember living in San Antonio and the backlash on social media when the second weekend got rained out. Phoenix also had a make up show and, iirc, was the last year Phoenix was in Texas until this year.
Also on the line up, was Franz Ferdinand, Vampire Weekend, Tame Impala and Toro Y Moi. Just a crazy stacked year.
flying to it, idk I wouldn't have, but the limit to my festing budgets is always pretty low. i did drive 13 hrs for roo 16-17 and shaky 18 and this is better than those so I'd likely make the trek, but i wouldn't fly if i could get away with it.
the late night situation sucks, but that's just a city fest thing, and austin is honestly one of the better places for that.
i think the main difference in vibe/community with ACL and say roo is that there isn't a fun catch phrase that everyone repeats all weekend long and there isn't any kind of campsite comradery. but at this point (post-jam band (for both fests really)) they're pretty much the same community.
*i think if they nerfed the chair zone, and let the fest run until 11 to 12 it would be a lot better for me personally.

The post was dumb enough simply because he said "not the greatest year for ACL" and had never been before. Compared to other ACLs, it was awesome, and to think it's not because they (finally) dropped a sexual abuser from the lineup is fucking asinine.
ACL will never be as good as Roo overall so long as Roo has decent late night slates, though that has been weak lately. Crowds are generally better at Roo, but I've had shitty experiences with people talking during shows at both. Radiohead and Paul during ACL, U2 at Roo come to mind. This douche bag was literally asking his girlfriend if she had seen Across the Universe during Paul. Who cares? Shut the fuck up! Paul McCartney is standing right in front of you!
I've never had a guy who clearly hasn't showered in a week come by with his dog to try to trade me pills for puffs at ACL. So it has that going for it.
Im still searching for a fest lineup that can top this ever since. One of my favorite fest weekends ever and that's even with the 3rd day getting rained out.

Ok I didn't want to post yet, but I disagree with this pretty strongly. Going to spoiler this in effort to not unnecessarily add too much negativity to this thread. Also - huge disclaimer that I had a great fucking time and I love what I experienced of Austin this weekend.
If you would have said they are pretty much the same demographic, I may have agreed, but they are not the same community in my opinion. You enter what feels like a different universe at Bonnaroo. ACL, Shaky and any other city fest I've been to is just normal life with great shows taking place. I just think everyone's every day guard is up still at city fests where it comes down at Roo. I really wonder if people who don't notice this difference have not done Roo right in the past, and I'd invite you to camp with me if you ever go again.
You could make the reverse claim about myself and city fests, but I just dropped twice the money to see half the acts I see at Roo. I went overboard with spending to have the best time possible, and I'm pretty sure I did (and I'm pretty sure I'm fucked for the next month or two). I hate to say it and I will get flamed, but vibez is a thing regardless of all the mocking. After the fest, I hit restaurants, bars and then the hotel and kept drinking with friends. That was all fun, but I can (and do) recreate that situation many times throughout the year.
The crowds were less energetic. I have way less funny or memorable stories. I met less random people.
I didn't want to express this opinion until I had been to a city festival with a clearly superior lineup to Bonnaroo. Now that I have, I just can't believe people on here have forgotten how much different it is than a 12pm-10pm city fest. I think some people remember the hardships of Roo more than others. But the heat here was almost as bad and it actually encouraged me to stay at the hotel later than I would have stayed at camp at Roo (missing more acts).

I felt like Bonnaroo 2012 which was the end of the hippie era would have fit well. But I went back in 2015, and I found it was more a right of passage thing and about manufactured vibez and high fives moreso than the real hippies that actually made Bonnaroo what it was. Of course I'm way older. We did find the same kind of vibes at Wakarusa 2014 and Wakarusa 2015 as Bonnaroo 2012, but that was a hippie festival anyway. Then again, I'm old so I'm biased.

It takes a certain personality/motivation to drive to the middle of nowhere and camp for 4+ days. I think that's probably the main thing that makes Bonnaroo feel different.
We parked on the second day at the Bike Shop at Barton Springs and Lamar for the 30.00. All that required was a 10 minute walk out the park and someone able to drive. I handled Friday so I had the night off Saturday even though all the water I had to drink kept me from ever being too far over the limit, I don’t drive over the limit. So that was the solution provided we actually went out the correct exit.
I’m going to see CHVRCHES tonight at the Joy. We should get a few extra songs than the 55 minute or so festival set. I don’t listen to that much synth postpop or whatever genres they are considered to be. But I dig the new album, and they’ve grown on me. I only got the last 4-5 songs at ACL because Deftones were on, but I knew I’d be able to see them this week anyway.

Y’all have a good time week 2.
Clearest Blue beat change was an underrated moment of the weekend
