Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
If being able to find my friends easily is lame then I am the lamest person ever.
get your story straight, Rudy.
seriously though, totems are pretty obnoxious, especially if they fall outside those guidelines (nothing taller than 6ft, etc.) and are just props for attention seeking behavior. Put your funny totem up at your campsite and meet your neighbors - won't obstruct someone's view at a show and camp neighbors are better than that random dude who wanders by to take a selfie with you. If you really need to find your friends, pick out some meeting spots around centeroo for the shows you wanna see, have some LED's or el wire for nighttime, etc.
I've been to 14 bonnaroos without totems, and only lost 3 friends who have disappeared into the crowd never to return.
If you can't find your friends without a totem you need to work on your communication skills.
"I'll meet you at [incredibly specific location] at [exact time]. If you're not there within 20 minutes then we'll catch up [specific location] at [time] Otherwise, see you at the camp site."
Simple as that. Otherwise, yea, do a small collapsible pole with a light or inflatable dealie on the end. Put it down during the set.
My lady and I are heading to our first Roo this year and we're so effen excited!
I love making funny totems to meet new festival friends but was I got concerned when I was reading the rules regarding bringing them.
From the site:
YES Totem (Less than 6 feet tall, and less than a 1/2 inch thick. Must be made of light material: swim noodles, foam type material, cardboard tubes, fabric, light plastic, balloons and/or blow up items.)
NO Totems made of wood, metal and/or PVC material will NOT be allowed. This includes flag poles and heavy sticks.
I watched the livestream last year and saw 100's of totems there that don't fit within these guidelines. Is this a new policy or are the above rules not strongly enforced? The one I've already built is made of PVC is why I'm concerned.
Thanks!
Loosely enforced. Depends on the volunteer you get when you enter at security. Pool noodles and tent poles are a popular choice.

I figured, that's the case with all fests. It's not very big!
Just be sure your totem is large and more interesting than whatever performer I won’t be able to see because of it.
LMAO! I have never walked away from a show at a festival and said "That a-hole with the totem up front ruined the show." Damn Totems must be really big and bad at Bonnaroo!
Well everybody, thanks for the info! I'm still bringing my totem, I'll just modify it a bit. I hope for my safeties sake I don't block anyone of ya'lls views! See ya'll in a month!

Totems are fine if you wave them until the band comes on and then as soon as that happens, you put it by your side. Wave it during the show and you're being a douche.

FWIW the people giving you shit probably aren't going to Bonnaroo and haven't been in years.

But when we did, totems were still annoying as shit.

Sure, I just dont think most people that attend share this opinion. I remember lots of funny Bonnaroo totems, I don't remember a single one blocking my view...probably because I just moved or told the person to put it down. I think it adds to the vibe of the festival, which people in this forum who don't attend love to mock.

I remember a totem with a perfectly rectangle piece of cardboard on it blocking my view of Paul for like 60% of the show. They were in front of me quite a bit so I couldn’t personally ask them to put it down, but every time it’d go up it’d block out exactly where Paul was standing. Someone must’ve finallly told them to lower it bc at one point it went down and stayed down.
Totems are fine sometimes, but they usually are blocking someone’s view, so it’s only common courtesy to not be a dick about it and keep it down for the show unless you have to have it up for some reason (like finding someone or leading your group out). But they’re usually funny and i like seeing them all weekend long.
