still, I really like this lineup and that breakdown is pretty good. i definitely want to keep this on the radar now and in the future.
It's always really carefully curated and they tend to cherry pick from the genres they cover. It's always bucket list acts mixed with newer artists which makes it so great. Plus, Knoxville is a fun city. You can throw a dart and hit a great restaurant and the venues are freaking incredible. Like seriously incredible.
My guess is this is where Spiritualized will play. You can always get up close, too. The first year I went, Dave Maynar and I snuck up to the front row for Television.
The other venues are smaller and super intimate. They employ the services of a few churches (no pun intended) and a club that feels like you're standing on-stage with the artists.
During the festival you'll get an alert about some "Holy Shit, WHAT?!?" secret show like Philip Glass playing with locals neif-norf.
The only drawback is hotel pricing downtown. Once you've gotten that taken care of, it's a smooth 4 days.
He's going to Coachella and he's going to like it.
Coachella was a different monster for me. I had a lot of fun but really have no need to return. It ended up being $3k for two people and having a lineup that wasn't that much different than any other (Outkast year). There was less than a thousand people at The Replacements and that fucking windstorm took out the tent. It just wasn't for me and I have to remind myself of that. Next time I blow 3k though, I'm just going back to Primavera. I liked the pissers better, honestly.
That Nate Wooly's Columbia Icefield album got announced this month via Northern Spy. The lead track is immense. It's groovy but sprawling and clocks in at over 20 minutes. It's been on repeat for a few weeks here.
Does anybody remember the bedroom community show which was cancelled in 2016? I ended up getting the whale watching tour dvd for christmas and it's incredible. Can't imagine how great that show would have been live.

That's awesome. I was super bummed about that show. I'll look into that DVD then.
So 12 Hour Drone in January and Schedule in February? I'm getting antsy and buying all black clothing for the weekend.

I may try to rip it so a select few people can see it... pretty sure it will never be reprinted and I cannot find it anywhere online at all. Haven't watched the documentary bit yet.

I honestly don't know. The Drone lineup is extra cool this year, or is that just me?
Nope, it's not just you. It's amazing. I've just started to think about how I'm gonna stay awake during it.
Nice. Fun fact, I work with a paper here in Knoxville and our sports editor is performing for the drone piece (William Wright) and our movie critic is doing visuals (Andy Vinson). Try to check them out if you can. Who else should I pay attention to?

Sure, I will!
After a quick glance, Carl Stone, Kara-lis Coverdale, and Rafiq Bhatia for sure (other than the obvious names like O’Malley, of course).
Drone lineup is dope. I have been seeing this gal who works weekends at one of the main venues, and she mentioned offhand that she basically got offered however many big ears passes she wanted the last few years. I immediately began to sweat.

Jake Xerxes Fussell announced he's opening for Mountain Man this run. Kinda expecting him to be an addition.
Also, shoutout to Rocky Mount. It's the moonshine capital of the world, you know. It's also 10 minutes from my other home. Always glad to see it listed anywhere.

OK - I'm FREAKING OUT. Mimi Goese, for those not familiar, was the lead singer of Hugo Largo. I can't even begin to tell you what their album "Mettle" meant to me; it was the soundtrack to my senior year at high school... still in my Top-20 albums of all time. I never, ever, thought I'd have the chance to see her perform live. I doubt I'll hear any tracks from that band, but I'm still beside myself.
And Roedelius - I wonder if he's going to be at the fest again or if it's just a recording. Either way, these are fantastic adds. I'm calling it: this is the best year of Big Ears yet.
