My bad on Eddie and Jerry. I also accidentally selected Redman twice. I shouldn't be making excuses, but with the NFL regular season right around the corner and having 93 FAs, I got sloppy.
My angle here is simple: This is the one where you can see The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.
To clarify on The Beatles: The first set will be a Beatlemania style set that they actually did perform very many times. I created a superjam as a loophole to get the Beatles to perform their late discog because I apparently misunderstood the rules. Either way, that is what will happen. We will install a fence somewhere in the main stage field in case anyone wants to feel like they are in those old pictures where tons of girls are randomly screaming through fences at the band.
Slightly bummed about missing on Jerry Seinfeld. I had a nice Larry David crew on Sunday night, but it won't be difficult to back-fill that while sticking with the theme after all of the FAs are done with.
Honestly, everyone else in this draft is so much more knowledgeable about music than I am, so I tried to take advantage of the one genre I know front to back: Hip-Hop. I was a lame, only-listen-to-hiphop-head all throughout High-School and most of college. This messageboard has helped me evolve significantly. Either way, I was able to put together a 20-30 act, full weekend hip-hop stage showcasing different themes almost strictly through Free Agency that I am very happy with. Friday is Underground then NY at night. Saturday is all about the South. Sunday is basically just 12 all-time legends passing the mic off to one-another. I don't think I could highlight anything from other genres that you guys wouldn't already be extremely familiar with, so I will stick with what I know.
I think that Kool G Rap is the third most underrated MC of all time behind Big Boi and Black Thought. Big Pun famously knelt down and kissed his ring upon meeting him. He not only has 2-3 borderline classic albums early in his career, but he evolved into an Eminem / Big Pun level technical lyricist later on. He has out shined countless legends throughout the years (and has never been bested on a track that I have heard), and the most impressive thing to me is that he made it in hip hop with a fucking lisp, and sounds hard as fuck to boot. I would recommend "Live and Let Die" as his best album. Here are some tracks that he just absolutely bodies later into his career.
"New York Livin' / Got a n***a 4 - 5th liftin' / send you as a gift to the mortician if you forfeit livin' / my fortune is forbidden"
Love that remix. Outclassing Nas like it's nobody's business.
Once heard someone call that double-time flow the second best of all time to Biggie on Notorious Thugs. Not sure I agree with that, but I love the verse regardless. It's one of those situations where Killer Mike and Bun B should have just packed there things and left the studio.
Another artist that I think everyone should check out is Cunninglynguists. They have a really, really strong discog, but the highlight is "A Piece of Strange." It's so soulful, so southern. Not to hate on Big Krit (another artist I'm happy to have at DUUUVAL Calling), but I think they are a much better version of him.
Elsewhere, I threw in a bunch of comedy and a Saturday Speaker series. These were areas that I felt I could compete in via Free Agency alone. Happy to witness Sam Harris dump on Jordan Peterson about religion. It's porn to me. He, Dawkins and Hitchens were my intellectual idols growing up. I thought it would be interesting to throw in Chomsky in as a contradiction to Hitchens b2b.
I have pretty strong soul and jazz stages on Saturday and Sunday respectfully.
For Friday and Saturday late nights, I threw in a ton of meme-y, guilty pleasure artists in an attempt to unfold some arms and get people to let loose after witnessing The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. I still think I've scheduled enough quality acts during those time-frames in case you aren't about that fuckery.
I spent my morally questionable picks on my favorite two comedic minds in history (along with Larry David) instead of selecting one of the 3 versions of Cee Lo that were drafted.
Z Ros a domestic abuser as well, that came out here pretty recently. But he's not big enough so it didn't end his career or anything, definitely bummed me out. I was pretty bummed, I really like him, mo city don is a classic.
