I expect this to take place on Sept. 29, a week after the big Paul Simon show in Flushing Meadows, which is also an AEG Presents gig.
A few lineup guesses: Arcade Fire, Phoenix, Mumford & Sons, Lionel Richie, and Katy Perry, with possible J. Cole, Janelle Monae, and Lenny Kravitz guest spots. Probably too soon for Kendrick or Metallica to come back, and Macca seems like too big a name, but maybe I’m wrong.
This was pretty fun last year. Short sets and not the best crowd but a lot of action packed in. We had Global VIP which was OK until the security guy let us into Premier VIP for Stevie. That is the way to go.

I'm actually betting on 9/15, the weekend before the Paul Simon gig. 9/29-9/30 is There's No Leaving New York, the National's two-day festival dealie at Forest Hills. There's no saying they couldn't conflict, of course...but, as far as I'm aware, 9/15 is the only September Saturday currently free of a big live music event, and it would fall in line with when this has happened in the past.
It's going to be interesting to see how people react to the lineup. I predict mixed feelings.

I can't tell you the date of the festival, but I can tell you that it's always taken place the last week of September, and five out of six festivals have taken place on Saturdays four days after the Tuesday opening of General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (the exception being 2015 when debate was delayed until the Monday after the usual date due to the Jewish holidays). In 2018, General Debate is scheduled to begin Tuesday 9/25, so I'd expect the festival to take place on Saturday 9/29. 9/15 is three days prior to the opening of the session, which in UN time is two weeks earlier than it's ever taken place, and probably earlier than it would take place, given that it seems mistimed to have the impact intended by the sponsoring organization.

After I posted about a possible Lenny Kravitz guest appearance above, he announced a show in NYC on Thursday 9/27, with his schedule open until the following Tuesday in Colorado.
I have no line up insights but the date's been set for this for awhile - September 29th. There was a VIP Flyaway contest that had this date, and VIP tix have been on pre-sale since May 1 on Ticketmaster! Actually that pre-sale ends today so I expect the actual announcement today or tomorrow. If so inclined to get VIP without knowing the line up, I'd buy today as the price will go up when the announcement comes.

How about the paid ticket options. Are those any good?
I've done both Global and Premier... Premier is the way to go, Global isn't worth it over the free option, other than much easier entry. Need to get in on Premier early though, as the price has been known to double fairly quick after it goes on sale.

A free shit show is better than a paid rained out shit show.
Free for a shit experience isn’t worth it. As a non-poor adult, I’d rather spend money on an actual festival.
Panorama wasnt really that much better. Two out of the three crossover acts that a lot of people bought tickets for were cancelled. So the only act that is actually crossing over is Janet. And her show was great, but the field was completely mud and smelled like shit. Unless theres a storm, Global is going to dunk on the Panorama experience; plus its mostly free.

idk I dont see a run of Byrne->Fleet Foxes-> The XX-> Odesza-> The Killers on this lineup

Nothing but love, Launchy, but I disagree on this one. Unless you pay, Global Citizen is a rough day, and, even as cockeyed as Panorama went this year, it was a better experience, overall (unless, of course, you were only there for the Friday artists, obviously). Amenities are few and geographically not easily accessible (especially once the crowd gets in), and the lines are no joke. You have to pay for water (which, with the hot September temps, now, thanks to climate change and all, is no small thing, any more). Getting in is a huge pain in the ass. Most of the sets are short (Metallica got, what, 5 songs a couple of years ago? Last year, the Killers got 4). And, once you find your spot, you're pretty much stuck there for the full day, as there's not really anything else to see or do.
I've been to Global Citizen the past three years, and I've had some really good times, there (Kendrick in 2016 FTW), so I'm not shitting on the thing, overall. But I'd take a full festival experience - even a Panorama 2018 one - over GCF any day.
I think this might be the first year in a while I don't go. This is the same day as Day 1 of The National's thing out at Forest Hills, for which I already have tickets...plus, if I'm being honest, having seen Janet at Panorama, the only artist on that list I'm bummed to miss is Janelle Monae (and I'm still pondering a late 1-day pass purchase to Afropunk, which would ease that pain).
Other than the clusterf**k getting into this thing with a free ticket, I have found it to be a pleasant day in the park, the weather is usually perfect. I bring a sandwich and have never have had a problem with water. Plus, you can nap during the speeches, lol. Not really digging this lineup though except for Janelle and Janet (skipped Pano this year and I was contemplating a 1 day for Afropunk but my knee has been a problem lately) so am on the fence about going.

Those are pretty good points. It is more fun to be at a festival where you can walk around and go to other stages and attractions than one field with one stage.
The set times thing is a little off base. It depends on which act you were coming for. Metallica only got 30 min which definitely was a bummer (although seeing them play as the sun was going down was pretty cool. Enter Sandman as soon as it got dark out was perfectly timed). But the headliners were really Kendrick and Rihanna. Kendrick got an hour and Riri got an hour 15.
I would imagine based off this lineup: Cardi is going to get 30. Weeknd will get an hour. and Janet will get an hour 15 (so only about 15 min less than she got at Pano).
I've been to Global Citizens twice (2012, 2015) both times in the Premium VIP (or whatever is the closest aside from the "Ultra" which is invite only I think). Honestly, it doesn't seem that worth it. I would have gone last year to see Green Day, The Killers and The Lumineers but given they all play 17 songs total between them, just wasn't worth it. The cause and the speeches all come from a good place but it can get tiring after you've been standing in the same spot all day. 2015 was particularly bad as the crowd was getting restless for both Beyonce and Pearl Jam yet had to deal with yet another speaker talking about the lack of toilets in some country or lack of education opportunities elsewhere. I know I'm coming off as insensitive, and I really don't mean to be, but there's a time and place for that and a bombardment of information to a large crowd in that environment just doesn't work.
Even if you're in the premium VIP area, you're still not THAT close and the opportunity to go to the bathroom/get food is fairly limited as people tend to pack in. That being said, for $150 if you love all acts on the lineup, it's not a bad investment. Just be prepared to be standing in your spot all day.

I had sold my ticket but tuned into the TV broadcast at the exact moment the panic was happening. Looked to go across from one side across to behind the Global VIP section. This what I fear though now that I have a bum knee and can't move fast...
