Just got back to Denver from my first ACL ever! The music was so good but damn the heat really did detract from our experience, I'm just not used to the humidity, especially on Friday. I know people complain about it at Coachella but for some reason this zapped my energy much more dramatically. Maybe the lack of shade?
Overall I really liked how the grounds were set up. Sound quality was fantastic and stages are simple yet pleasant. The crowd was mostly ok. Didn't even attempt Lizzo, and crossing from Thom to Tame was a nearly insurmountable task. The only thing I didn't like was just how many dang people there were. 450k over 2 weekends is just INSANE, double Coachella's capacity with maybe 60-70% of the space. I guess it keeps tickets cheap? I truly felt like I didn't have breathing room the entire 3 day weekend. Another thing I noticed was how bad the crowd was with talking during sets. Probably 5-6 times a day I had to deliberately search for somewhere in the crowd where people were actually paying attention to the music. Not a problem during Billie or Cardi but when James Blake is crooning it really impacts the mood.
Every artist I saw really put their all into each set, highlights being Tame of course, The Cure, The Raconteurs. You could tell they were happy to be at the festival.
Lil Uzi dropping should be a surprise to no one, as he had other shows scheduled during ACL weekend. The chants of "quack Uzi" really cracked me up. Cardi was ~25 minutes late to a 60 minute set which is frankly pathetic but they let her continue past her scheduled time to make up for it.
I think maybe you're misunderstanding the "450k" number. That's 225k per weekend, 75k per day. Coachella has a daily cap of 99k. This is less people than Coachella, and it's the way they've always counted festival attendance.
I consider Coachella and ACL pretty much the exact same level of overcrowded clusterfuck. The differences? You camp in the middle of nowhere at Coachella, the tickets cost almost twice as much, and you get more EDM. Otherwise, both are way too hot and crowded.
If you're looking for something similar but better, consider Lollapalooza, which is essentially identical to ACL but on much larger festival grounds with a lot more trees. Still hot as hell but more shade, without question.

Coachella increased their cap to 125k in 17 or 18. Also ACL has great lineups but Coachella definitely is better and certainly doesn't deserve the "more EDM" title. I haven't been to ACL but it's hard to believe that the production value beats Coachella's also

Highly recommend Osheaga for a big festival experience. Legal pot, strong exchange rate, side by side main stages and incredible weather make it super fun. Also they book really diverse lineups with some rare electronic artists sprinkled in. plus Montreal is a beautiful, fun city to explore. Should also mention it was extremely easy to get close this year but i think it only sold like 60% capacity this year or something like that.

Attended Friday; hottest I’ve ever been at a festival. Coachella is dry heat and with more tents to escape to. Overall it zapped our energy but it also made it more memorable.
In retrospect, my girlfriend and I agreed that buying a day pass to Barton springs (right outside the grounds) would have been a tremendous compliment to our festival experience. Jump In for a quick cool down, then go catch a few more sets. I saw quite a few people employing this strategy with 3 day wristbands.
Pros: The area around Zilker is so much fun, and clearly used to hosting the festival on an annual basis Permanent restrooms(!!!!!!) - zero line most of the day Friendly people Easy to navigate Great beer garden (free to carry around the whole festival) Local food options
Cons: Heat - could misters be installed certain areas? No liquor options for GA Lack of art installs
Standouts: King princess / comet is coming / slash / RL grime
Chairs didn’t bother us much! In fact I got jealous at some point. especially the ones with shaded extensions.
Terrifying in what way? Too many women? Too many dancing people? We didn't see really any bad crowds all weekend, and we hit a diverse bunch of shit. Billie Eilsh was a lot of young kids and their parents, but that was to be expected. Walking in Saturday, the Hippie Sabotage crowd appeared to be about the only dewshy collective. I don't know.
It was insanely packed. People were barely budging when you were trying to get out of the crowd. I don't know if I can blame C3 for putting her on that stage instead of Honda as I didn't expect her crowd to be that big either.
Yeah, debating on how early to go to that stage. She has no business being anywhere other than the main two stages at this point; she's become ridiculously popular recently. BANKS>her>Robyn sounds like a great time though, and my partner couldn't be more happy.
What were the daily highs? Today the high is 82 which is.. pretty pleasant.
Highs in the forecast for W2 are 80, 69(!), 76.
Was like 96/97 Friday and Saturday so 115-120 in the sun. Friday had a decent breeze and some clouds. I’m from the south, so it is tolerable for me. I just need shade to stay out direct sunlight or be forced to apply sunscreen throughout the day which I did.

Austin 360 wrote a good article on the whole debacle. Needless to say, I doubt much is gonna change next week.
We didn’t get it 91, but if it’s like most GA+, you’ll get front access. I wasn’t by the stage for most of the shows, but I did notice there was some overflow at a couple of the bigger shows where people were all the way back to the walkway area from the front by the bracelet checker guy. Saturday seemed way more packed in the daytime which it probably was because it was Saturday.

Cmack was all about that 16 show. We finally got her at Voodoo last year, but it was an afternoon set at the main stage that had at least 15k people there. I think Miller Lite was a good bet and certainly a great time slot for her. But it turns out she’d have probably done better playing a preHL slot at American Express or Honda.
So tired, so worn out. That heat was killer, and I'm a Texan. Witnessed four different persons pass out over the three days. 1 at Tame, 1 at Billie, 1 at Glover, and 1 at Lizzo - where I'm surprised I didn't see more, as I was right in the thick of that gargantuan crowd.
But let's start with Friday.
Every year I go through the line-up looking for hidden gems, plan out my schedules, and I end up becoming interested in several acts that start early. Most of it usually gets thrown out the window and in this case, became sizzled by the sun and dissipated into the ether. I'd be lucky enough to show up by 2PM with my group. Just in time to jump in on the last half of Jenny Lewis' interview at the Bonus Track stage. Her personality continues to re-affirm my musical crush I've had for 15 or so years. Well imagine how my scorched little heart fluttered when she looked right at me multiple times during her set later in the day.
Anyway, after the interview, went to the first half of the spunky Cherry Glazerr, who happened to be opening for Jenny at the ACL late night show. She seemed fun!
Walked across the park to catch some local Black Pistol Fire, 2-piece in the style of white stripes/black keys/royal blood. Perfect timing as they began their "Redbone" cover. And just before leaving, they brought out Blackillac, other locals and friends of Gary Clark Jr., for a strong collaboration.
Walked across the other end of the park to witness Tyler Childers on the AmEx. By this time, I assumed the G'n'R campers would be in full force, similar to Metallica last year. Well, that wasn't the case, and it was a very slim crowd to slip through, where we got center-side rail easily. I like a handful of Tyler's tracks, and he seemed to have a fair share of fans in the crowd singing along. Loved his backdrop art.
I wanted to hop around and see some K.Flay / Kaytranada, but - IT'S TOO FRIGGIN' HAWT - the group decided to get some lunch while waiting for Raconteurs. And this is the part of the schedule that really betrayed me and my interests. I would have loved to warp time and see ALL of Racs, Comet, Jenny, Thom, Tame and G'n'R. But that just isn't possible (currently). I definitely made the effort to see at least portions of each, with Comet the only one not making the cut - The Comet Came and I didn't witness it. We start with Jack and Co. and man, did they bring it. Had heard Jack seemed to be having more fun than he did with his last solo tour, and I'd definitely agree. Representing Daniel Johnston with the Tee.
hustled over to Jenny, saw 4 tracks. Hustled over to get a good spot for Thommy on his birthday, saw 3 tracks. Love the seemingly friendly relationship he has with this festival, being here with Atoms in '13, Radiohead in '16, and now '19. Can't wait to see him on the 20th anniversary lineup in 2022.
Backed out and up to get a good spot for Tame Impala - one of my wife's favorites. The lasers and rainbow halo and bass lines delivered again - NO CONFETTI THO!?!?
After Tame, I dragged my begrudging wife back across the yard to see the last of G'n'R - she hates them. I am mostly indifferent, I like about 6 songs, hate about 3. Well, as soon as we walk up, they're entering encore break, which is fine. But I cannot believe we only got two songs - and one of them being one of my least favorite ever. And the sound was VERY weak from where we were walking all the way up to near the chair zone. I couldn't believe. They ended well before cerfew - but that's probably because they got a whopping 2.5 hours. Ah well, at least I got some fireworks, fitting for an explosive day of music.

llz can i asked how long y’all stayed for Tame because I’m trying to see both and figure it out right lol
Unlike the similar headline situation last year of Metallica/Justice - started at Met, saw all of Justice in middle, and ended with Met - We camped for, and stayed for all of Tame. He started one minute late and ended on time, as I recall it. Both as in G'n'R as well? Yeah, I wanted to do some of that too, but that 30 minutes of G'n'R at the end wasn't a guarantee, sadly. Best I could say is look up both of their set-lists for that day and gauge out what you're willing to miss of both. It's also not a guarantee that they will be identical, but I bet they will be pretty darn close.

nice I’ll do that i was planning on first hour of Tame and then rest of GnR but yeah I’ll look it up might cut Tame to 45 minutes but have never seen either one really like Tame and just don’t wanna mix out on a legacy act like GNR

That was the quandary we faced both Friday and Saturday. Friday is more difficult to navigate especially if you are planning on seeing all of TYTMB
Thom is on the Milla Lot Stage which if you are facing the Honda Stage (where Tame Impala plays) is adjacent to the right and tucked back in to that section. Thom was great and is clearly the option during the beginning of his time slot (no hate to Jenny, but it's not the same level). We were toward the back on the back right (facing). As soon as GnR started, we were getting blasted by sound waves and bleed coming from sort of behind us to our right (AMEX Stage). It was interfering with the enjoyment of the Thom Yorke show which is why we went to the back of GnR for about 10-12 minutes though we were only about halfway across the festival (could see and hear but it wasn't like we were actually at GNR).
If you're at Thom and dis GnR, you can leave about 10-15 minutes early and post up for Tame and still be able to watch the Thom Yorke show from the Tame crowd since it's the adjacent stage. However, if you want to see some of all 3, you can always catch the beginning of Thom Yorke (say 15-20 minutes), walk over to GnR for 30-35 and then come back before the 8:15 Tame Impala start. It's doable that way. Also with Thom/Tame being the stages on that end of the field, you could watch all of Thom, some of Tame and then just go watch the end of Guns N' Roses.
Here's a tip related to all that. It's a sea of people exiting at night, and where your specific exit is may be key to how you want to do it. I have fucked this up year after year at ACL where you exit where it seems logical only to find yourself on the perimeter of the festival with an extensive walk to get back to where you actually need to be (one option even makes you climb hills to get out of that neighborhood). That can be a mfer. There are generally 3 exits - the Ladybird Entrance behind Miller Lite Stage, the Barton Springs entrance behind the BMI Stage or the Barton Springs East entrance which runs by the merchandise tent. Absolutely don't forget where you are supposed to come out if you are walking, biking or taking a shuttle.
Oh I 100% could be misunderstanding. All I'm going off of is this article and the ACL Wiki page. Sounds like Forbes doesn't know how to do any math (shocker).
Assuming those numbers are bogus and the festivals have similar daily capacities, then I really just noticed the impact of the smaller grounds making the crowds more dense. I don't think Coachella feels as overcrowded simply because the grounds are bigger, but I'm also spending most of my time in the smaller tents (Mojave, Yuma, etc) at artists who have a smaller draw, where at ACL I was really there for the top line artists who have the massive crowds. I was almost exclusively at Honda and Miller Lite. The shade really would have made a difference as well.

that’s all good to know too I’ll be honest I’m probably one of the few people not going to Thom but what i May do is watch first 45 minutes of GNR and then end of Tame and try and get out in time i think like someone said i need to pull up set lists but do always appreciate the help for sure
