1. SXSW brings in $350m to the Austin economy, a city of 950k residents. Coachella/Stagecoach bring in $700m+ to the Palm Springs area, a population of under 150k. Big difference in economic impact.
2. Palm Springs is moving ahead with the BNP Paribas Tennis tournament.
I don't see the city wanting to cancel this. I'm more worried about the state making a declaration about mass gatherings. Hopefully the tennis tourney goes smoothly and calms peoples' fears. 33,000 attendees is not 100k, but it's a pretty good proxy IMO.

I don’t think Indian wells is comparable. It’s a ritzy tennis tournament with tons of permanent bathrooms and an older crowd that goes home every night and showers. Nowhere near the same as the dirty teenage wasteland that is coachella.

At the same time, the older crowd makes it more vulnerable
The valley can survive a year of no Coachella. If, like SXSW, they feel the negative impact of the festival and subsequent fallout will outweigh one year of revenue, they will pull the plug.

Palm spring resident,
It's not just coachella and stage couch we also now have three weekends of Splash House. Every weekend from now until october has huge pool parties and DJs that fund our economy. I think Coachella is getting shut down for April but I wouldn't be surprised if they do some one off in September with a few huge groups or something genre related. First Coachella I've missed since 2006 RIP
If they have the standing permit to do a Desert Trip type event in the fall as people have mentioned, I can see them just postponing the event until October. Frank will just delay whatever project he has until the fall, if anything RATM playing right before the election might even be more relevant, plenty of bands will just re-route spring tours to the fall since Coachella is typically the most lucrative spot on their tour, etc. It would be a massive bummer and they'll probably have to re-issue a slightly amended poster, but I can see it happening and being the safest solution for all.

Sitting in a seat for two hours at a tennis match then driving back to your condo is much different than standing outside for 12 hours, walking miles across a wide open field, jumping up and down shoulder to shoulder with thousands of people, then going through a large public transportation system to get back to your hotel when your immune system has been kicked in the balls all day. I get sick every week after Coachella with no virus.

The post-Coachella hay fever affects probably the majority of attendees, especially Weekend 2 when the dust is really flying. It'll cause a lot of people to freak out this time around.

I’ve moved on from hoping this isn’t cancelled to hoping that if it doesn’t happen in April that they postpone to October. No way they could have the exact same lineup, but I really need something to look forward to.

I was literally thinking the same and I actually think this is a realistic solution. There's a Forbes article that said artists have already sunk a ton of money into their Coachella production and I'm sure they'd be in favor of delaying until October instead of cancelling outright. I'm not even sure how many artists actually have tour plans set in stone for the fall and with something like Coachella they'd probably be willing to accommodate. There's a good chance that the coronavirus may fuck up everybody's tour schedule regardless. Stagecoach may be a bigger issue since I'm pretty sure country artist plan their tours pretty far in advance but if Coachella were to start planning this soon, they could be able to put together a similar lineup for a July announcement.

The main problem I see with this idea is the risk of the virus re-emerging in the fall a la spanish flu. Would Coachella bother scheduling another festival with the risk of the same thing happening again in the fall? Canceling once would be bad enough, canceling twice would be very bad, I'd think.

Well hopefully there may be some indication of that happening sometime before they announced but who knows at this point.
Another issue with this proposal is this would probably be tough to run and plan this AND get ready for 2021 at the same time. We could also see some artists try to plan their own LA shows in April instead too.

Well, if they pulled off Desert Trip in between Coachella each 6 months apart, they can probably handle Coachella 2020 and 2021 only being six months apart. I guess that's the benefit of consolidating down to only working with a handful of talent agencies lol. They'd probably give artists the option of playing the Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 versions and essentially book the posters together in the summer when they're typically booking next year's poster anyway. The rest of the logistics are probably close to formulaic at this point. I'm obviously VASTLY simplifying things, but if Coachella is GV's cash cow, they're gonna find a way to put it on, unless the experts are telling them what braun is saying where they could be screwed in the fall anyway.
They have THREE festivals in April and permits for TWO more festivals weekend in October. Would Stagecoach get canned outright or have it in April while only the Chellas get bumped back? Ask polo fields to have 3 fests in October?
SXSW cancelled a week before the festival date? Sheesh. There's still a month and 4 days until Coachella, pretty sure by then this will have settled down a bit. I feel like Coachella being THE festival is what will keep the show going. They can offer refunds to people who no longer want to go, and continue as planned. Maybe a few acts drop, but as long as it's none of the big names, it'll be fine.
I’m really hoping this doesn’t get cancelled. Coachella is what’s been getting me through a rough couple months, and I really need this to look forward to.
We have until April 5 to cancel our AirBnB and only pay the service fee so we wouldn't be out much money, assuming our wristbands are refunded. But it would be a big emotional hit to lose something we've invested so much mental energy into. If it's cancelled, I wonder if it would make listening to the acts I discovered just conjure negative thoughts.
I remember when HARD Summer got canceled I couldn’t listen to Underworld or Bloody Beetroots for months.
When everyone decided to riot at HARD and canceled it.
Coachella has to happen in order for the festival eco system to survive this ordeal. If not, nothing is safe. Lolla South America is where we should keep our focus on right now. If this is the needle that pops the festival bubble then it was a different avenue to course correct market saturation.
Semi-related: If you’re going, check your flights. I just rebooked and saved a significant amount of money on both of my Southwest flights.
Yeah flight prices are dropping at a crazy pace the past few days, pretty much across the board. Unfortunately, that's probably not a great sign in terms of where this whole outbreak is heading.

Feeling this and honestly just hoping it works out for the best bc I have been counting on it
