Likely won't get due to booking trends of the last 5 years + Danny Elfman

This list is annoying but something we've all basically come to terms with. Just never going to happen.
i agree bonnaroo has found their electronic niche for the time being, but I'll never give up hope that it changes. for years there after the dubstep/EDM boom in the US they barely booked any electronic music at all. now we have an electronic stage that goes all night. so things can change, even if at a glacial pace.
over on the r/bonnaroo one of the top voted comments on the Coachella 2020 Lineup post is about the electronic artists booked, with 75 updoots. This comment in particular with 45 updoots specifically calls for more house and techno at bonnaroo. i know that isn't exactly indicative of a groundswell of support for good dance music at bonnaroo but it's something.

^^^ This list is absolutely insane. The fact that this is possible almost makes me wonder if the Roo booking staff even pays attention to music at half the rate that the random loser on this messageboard does.

Lana is not confirmed out. She plays in Italy the Tuesday before Bonnaroo, that's it. It may be unlikely but in my mind she's in the last category.
VIP at Bonnaroo mostly sucks balls. It was easily the worst VIP I have ever done at any festival. The welcome dinner and jazz brunch they have is barely soup kitchen level. The back entrance in was only open after like 3 in the afternoon. Bathrooms were okay, and your things were guarded from wandering freaks and all, but I found little to no value in that experience and went back to GA. Now if camping placement and lack of a 10-12 hour entrance is important, that was where any value was. I drove right up to and in the gate immediately with only a wristband check which was pretty sweet. Plus they claim there are a bunch of improvements and some preferred stage viewing areas. So that might be of value.

The answer to bandeto's question of whether or not we would get anything here from Coachella will be yes. There will likely be numerous undercard acts and probably some mid and upper card acts as well. Hell Buku has 10 crossovers though they are also a Goldenvoice owned festival.
-------------------------------------
What I'd want at Bonnaroo from the Coachella lineup: Rage Against the Machine, BADBADNOTGOOD, Danny Elfman suprise Oingo Boingo set, Denzel Curry, DJ Lord, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, the J.I.D, RTJ, Chicano Batman and Thom Yorke's Tomorrow's Modern Boxes. Everything else I either don't know (much of the single person acts), don't like/don't care about or otherwise have seen enough times or recently and either wasn't overwhelmed or maybe would have it at take it or leave it. I'll watch all 3 channels, so I'm sure I'll find 7-10 acts like every year that I didn't know and haven't seen and will want to see in person. From a rough count, I've seen 44 of the acts on the Coachella lineup - and again, that's not to say I didn't like or wouldn't want to see a bunch of those again. The Comet Is Coming was last year so they are out. But shit like Travis Scott, Brockhampton, Calvin Harris, Cashmere Cat, DaBaby, Bishop Briggs, Louis the Child, Mura Masa, Slander or Whipped Cream I don't ever need to see again (not 100% I wouldn't, I just wouldn't pick them as something I wanted on a lineup).

I'm hoping there's something good in the Girl Talk "electronic but not on The Other" slot from last year

I'd rather they mostly left House and Techno off The Other and put it somewhere else (with obvious exceptions for bigger acts like Aphex Twin, or something like Jamie XX or whatever). Maybe they could expand the forest stage or build a warehouse area or similar to give y'all what you want. I'd be all for that which could make those fans happy and keep those of us who don't want to see that maybe with an opportunity to see something we'd rather be seeing and listening to.
For Kev-Bot - you're characterization of Bassheads at Voodoo is pretty wrong. Sounds like groupthink inspired bullshit. Some EDM kids stay at Le Plur all day. Many bassheads were otherwise all across the fields at rap and rock and R&B shows. /come on man

You should really just go to Coachella. I know that's easy for me to say as I never even went until I moved to the West Coast, but it is definitely worth it to go to at least once if you can pull it off both logistically and financially. I'm not saying that as a shot at Bonnaroo either. I think it's worth it to try out a bunch of different fests if you have the time and means to do so.

Why not just go to Coachella instead of being disappointed by Roo?
Have you been to Coachella, because that would answer your question

i understand you'll never enjoy house but i'm still convinced one day i'll find a techno set you'll enjoy. maybe something on the industrial techno side, or acid.

coachella is always on my wishlist. it just seems like a lot to fly across the country, deal with hotels and transportation, etc. i've been to the polo fields but in a much less crowded situation then coachella so i do have some idea of how it works, but triple the attendance would result in triple the traffic, triple the hassle, higher hotel costs, etc. but i do really want to experience the festival grounds and amazing production i see on the stream every year.
i think one of these years i'll just have to pickup presale and commit to it.
haha. I don't often go out to those shows and generally don't want to pick to see that stuff at a festival setting, but it's not like I haven't had fun at shit like some of Claude's sets or Dan Deacon or even some house album-spinning-scratching stuff like Mel. Some of the rarer stuff I do like and enjoy. And certainly that industrial house set Black Madonna did at Buku last year was pretty excellent. I just didn't really jive/jibe with the old rave culture era. It was mostly repetitive and simple time beats whereas I was raised on jazz and first generation progressive meaning I have an affinity for more complicated and free-form instrumental music along with abstract time and off-timing/odd-time signatures as opposed to a lot of that which can be repetitive (particularly many of the techno and especially the trance genres).
FWIW, it would be perfectly fine with me if say Bonnaroo curated one of the days at The Other as House and/or Techno. But if they're going to be bass-genres heavy, it's probably better that they flow through somewhat similar artists if that's the vibe they want at that stage (at least for a given block of time).
One of these days, my wife and I would like to go to Coachella to just try it once and see for ourselves. I know the vibe of the whole festival wouldn't necessarily be our thing, but their stage production and art installations look downright incredible.

It makes sense. I'm speaking from a place of privilege with my current/past jobs and the flexibility its allowed me for traveling to festivals. It's also helped with festivals like ACL/Leeds where the festival was part of a larger trip and I knew people in those places (not sure if you know anybody in Los Angeles/San Diego that might be able to make it more worth it). If you can wrangle together even one other person to cut down on cost and make logistics easier I'm sure you could find some people on here as well that would be cool with you camping with them (if your down to camp).
You guys think I just simply don’t want to go to Coachella?
Just going to expand here since it probably isn’t obvious to everyone.
Coachella would end up costing me more than double what Bonnaroo does, and Bonnaroo is already a lot.
Bonnaroo is an annual reunion between myself and my brothers who live out of state, friends from highschool, and friends from college.
I can likely pull off coachella financially, but there is a 0% chance to uproot that entire group and get them to pay double when they experience significant financial insecurity in the summer just to make Roo happen.
With all of that said, I’m still trying to make Coachella work by myself to meet up with internet friends while taking off extra days a mere two-three months after receiving a significant promotion at work.
Going to Roo does not eliminate my possibility of going to Coachella, but even if it did, there would be a compelling financial argument to make for choosing Roo in addition to seeing all of my lifelong friends + brothers vs seeing none of them.
TLDR: The existence of Coachellas great lineups does not mean that I can’t wish for Roo’s lineup to be good.

I didn't actually find the vibes to be bad when I went (not that you were for sure saying that, but it's a common complaint). It's different, but like Bonnaroo there's an annoying minority of people, but that's it. The majority are there to have a good time and don't infringe on others that are trying to do the same.
I am trying to go to both this year and I gotta say financially it is a bad idea, but we have a friend who lives nearby (presumably for a short time) so if i was ever going to go it's now. I won't have to rent a vehicle or get a hotel so that helps. Coachella almost always has more artists I'd like to see. Although because of the shorter festival days I already know I am going to miss a lot of stuff.
We tried Hangout a few years ago for our tenth anniversary trip.
I had a great time, she didn't as much. It wasn't really that the general atmosphere and vibe was bad, it's just that it was a lot different. After so many years of the almost anarchic nature of Bonnaroo, it was a learning curve to not see everyone be so quick to join in on weird fun stuff. There were a ton of influencers and such there too, and it just kind of felt like being there was seen as some status symbol or something as opposed to something that you're just waist deep in to purely enjoy.
I've heard that the atmosphere is comparable between them, especially since they're both GV. If Hangout ever had a lineup I liked enough, I'd try it again. I liked the beach experience at a festival, I'm betting I'd like the California vibe and all the art enough to make up for anything I didn't care for at Coachella.

Bonnaroo, each year, is significantly more fun than I had at ACL 2018. That ACL lineup was wayyyy better than any Bonnaroo lineup of the last 4 years. I think much of it does have to do with what you are hitting on here even though some people on this board will just say "vibez bro" and pretend that the camping / late night variables don't matter.
Having said that, I do have a running theory that Roo has become less weird and wild and vibezyyy as the experience has become more comfortable over the course of the last 3 years. As I'm nearing 30, I don't think I would trade that comfort, but I've noticed that I've had less funny and unique stories during the last couple years. And I think this may also cause the crowds to be a little less wild.
I will say that iii Points in Miami was another festival where I felt like I was sucked into a different universe while I was there. They had sets going until 5am. There was no camping. The art throughout the venue and the unique feel of each stage contributed to this world building. I've always imagined that Coachella would achieve this concept that I'm struggling to describe even without late nights, but I'll never know until I go.

I hear you and can understand where you're coming from. I've heard similar thoughts from a few other people, and I still contend that Bonnaroo is what you make of it.
We've pulled off some insane stuff with our projects and so have some other cool groups like Roochute, Roo Tang Clan, Reddaroo, etc. I feel like it's a thing where you get out of it what you put into it, not too different from what a lot of people say about Burning Man. If you have a crazy idea for a project or event, it's not that hard to work with the Bonnaroo community to make it happen and pull it off. I'm not so sure you could say that for many other festivals aside from maybe Electric Forest.
Most of my best stories are always going to be from 2016 because that was such a weird and wacky year, but I still have a lot from the past three years too. I mean, I got to officiate a wedding on top of the bus last year because a lot of us worked to put that together, that was such an honor and a blast!

How insane was that tow bill from cracker barrell after last years bonnaroo ??? Saw it broke down there for a few hours after Roo.
Just $150 after I called in a favor. We had a nagging fuel issue, and I didn't want to take five hours to get home since we had a guest in all the way from Korea. Got it fixed shortly afterwards!
