The “what surprise set do you want to see” was a weird question. “I’d really like to see Todd Terje, but only if it’s a surprise.”
That question made me not want to put someone I really wanted to see, because if it's a surprise set there's a decent chance I'll miss it and just be pissed.

Someone like Weezer is the ideal secret set imo. I could miss it and not really care but I could also make a really fun time out of it. Plus they seem like they’d be much better in a smaller, “club” setting.
Ariana Grande/ DMB/ The Cure Tame Impala/ A$AP Rocky/ Skrillex
Neil Young/ Travis Scott/ 21 Pilots Billie Eilish/ The Chemical Brothers/ Wilco
Radiohead/ Foo Fighters/ J Cole Lana/ My Morning Jacket/ Flume
Let’s discuss. Any seem plausible? What are your favorites? What would sell the best?
I would actually poop myself with excitement if the last one we're true. I think most likely is the one with Neil Young, but it would be a lot better for me if they swapped 21 Pilots for Vamp Weekend or something of the sort. I think I'd be happy with any of these
I don't see Panic as a headliner, they aren't a big enough draw anymore. And I don't know if they'd take a slot lower than the top, it's hard to say because the only fests they've played in a while are jammier niche fests where they are clearly a headliner. I'm not super familiar with Sufjan but does he play festivals? feel like i read something about how it's rare.
Ariana Grande/ DMB/ The Cure Tame Impala/ A$AP Rocky/ Skrillex
i know we throw The Cure around a lot as a potential Roo headliner, but I just don't think it will happen. to me they just don't fit the "roo vibe", when is the last time we've had a headliner that gloomy? everything else here seems reasonable though. would prefer a dave and tim or dave and friends set above DMB.
Neil Young/ Travis Scott/ 21 Pilots Billie Eilish/ The Chemical Brothers/ Wilco
other than chemical brothers, who IMO will never play bonnaroo, this seems like a possible lineup. replace chemical brothers with some wookbass and you are on to something. i would not hate a lineup with neil, wilco, and travis scott on it.
Radiohead/ Foo Fighters/ J Cole Lana/ My Morning Jacket/ Flume
seems reasonable and pretty cool. is j cole big enough for the 3rd slot? so hard to understand that guy's place in popular music.

WSP would be a walk back that wouldn't sell Sunday tickets. The Cure would be a Sunday HL that would sell tickets after a boisterous young HL of any sort Sat. -I see Dave Matthews being relegated to Sunday too if they were booked, almost as a gap stop for two big Fri - Sat HL'rs
Radiohead still seems possible, Foo Fighters feels inevitable - the combination would give us 2016 numbers though. It's just a touch higher than LCD Soundsystem / Pearl Jam without decent hip-hop lineup involved. I thought this year proved that, but people be stuck in their ways including booking companies so I will take that in stride. It's also more expensive than 2016 without either with new albums. I would rather put my chips into Radiohead / QoTSA which I think is more interesting but still is.. only good enough.
Which of the major female artists i.e. Ariana Grande or Lana Del Ray in the marketplace is releasing new work soon or is touring next cycle? (real question)
And yes I would take Dolly Parton closing Sunday easily; and it would sell tickets esp. OUTSIDE the TN/south area where she does most of her shows. Which is relevant to the bottom line of the festival. Also would be a shit ton of money.

i agree with the bolded above. if i could identify a pattern for success based on bonnaroo's lineups since 2016, it would be book two headliners for the masses (not a knock, i like popular music) and one headliner that is a bit more niche. and by for the masses i mean hip-hop, hip-hop adjacent, or pop. like i said i don't understand J. Cole that much but it doesn't seem like he is enough to fill the need for big name popular music.
drawing from walaka's lineups, some combination of:
For the masses, two of: Billie Eilish/Travis Scott/Ariana/Kendrick/21p More niche, one of: Neil Young/Radiohead/DMB/The Cure
like radiohead is hugely popular amongst their fanbase, but i'm sure there are plenty of people that would show up for one of the more current popular headliners that have never seen Radiohead but would be interested in seeing them to see what the hype is all about. similar to Phish this year. and of course you get all of the radiohead fans because it is unlikely they'll have any other dates in the south.
throw in plenty of electric forest-esque electronic music and a varied undercard genre-wise and you've got yourself a bonnaroo.
