I think the conflicting headliners really makes a big difference from the artist perspective. It seems very possible that The Cure or Tame wouldn't sign up for an 8 p.m. what stage slot pre-headlining for someone.
Ehh I don't really buy this. Bonnaroo has all the scheduling flexibility in the world. And I'm sure it's much more appealing for a huge bands to play unopposed sets with no curfews. They moved the entire late night schedule around in 2017 to extend U2's set time, so obviously playing unopposed was a big deal to them. I'm sure Macca liked his Bonnaroo set time better than when I saw him at Lolla, where he had to start at 8pm in order to make the show 2hrs and had to deal with soundbleed from Kaskade's set. Gambino doesn't mind playing before Phish this year, Stevie Wonder didn't mind playing before Jay Z in 2010, etc.
This is fair and you're right Bonnaroo could do more if it really wanted these artists, but I think that pointing to these two exceptions kind of proves my point as well. This is not something that happens all that frequently. Whether it is the artist's preference, or their management only wanting to book them so they look like a more traditional headliner closing a stage, I just think that some blame can go to both sides.
Oh my god I just saw the ACL lineup, they blew Bonnaroo out of the water again. Why can C3 book a lineups like that for ACL and not Bonnaroo?
Call me crazy but that lineup seems super top heavy?
Would be stoked to have GNR and the Cure on the farm but after line 3 the ACL lineup is a wasteland... and several of the good acts in those lower lines are also playing Roo
The bottom 9 lines are just kinda there re: ACL. Not confident I’ll find much for me at the bottom even after some digging. The rest of the ones aren’t Coachella-deep, but there’s enough to keep me engaged throughout. Then the top lines are obviously super strong. It’s in my top 3 or so lineups of the year for sure.
I do think (and this has kinda been my argument all along) that if they went a similar route with Bonnaroo, then they might get close to old numbers again.
Less Electric Forest, more C3 city fest. Book The Other like the Perry Stage. Have some solid headliners with strong subs. Throw some cool shit in there to incite excitement amongst vets (more Comet is Coming and Little Simz caliber, buzz acts). Keep the country/folk thing going. Bottle it with community or whatever. More people will show up.

Like, I feel out of touch because i see that ACL has gotten such a positive reception, but if you look outside the top four lines (headliners and top three, 18 acts) and compare to the acts in white at Roo (this excludes 20 acts written in color) I’d take Bonnaroo, very easily
Swap like, two or three of hozier, post, lumineers with three comparable ACL acts and Bonnaroo is the clear winner for me 🤷♂️

After looking over both lineups I may have been overdramatic, but I still like the ACL lineup more. If Phish were replaced by two headliners I liked or if Post Malone wasn't playing unopposed I might be singing a different tune though. Without naming acts that will be at both, I would be excited about the following (bolded artists I've never seen before):
At Bonnaroo: Grand Ole Opry, Saba, All Them Witches, Solange, Brockhampton, Beach House, Courtney Barnett, Parquet Courts, The National, UMO, Little Simz, Mac Demarco, Bombino, Kikagaku Moyo
At ACL: Guns N Roses, The Cure, Tame Impala, Robyn, The Raconteurs, Lizzo, Thom Yorke, James Blake, Tyler Childers, Kali Uchis, Rosalia, Kaytranada, Natalia Lafourcade, Tierra Whack, FIDLAR, IDLES, GoGo Penguin, Megan Thee Stallion, Men I Trust, Weyes Blood.

I've been trying to make an October festival happen for me the last few years and it hasn't panned out yet, but I really love the ACL lineup. Might try to make that work for me this year

But also consider that a decent chunk of those ACL acts are only either week 1 or 2
I know it’s a matter of taste but for me that Roo undercard is much deeper 🤷♂️
Is Roo going to get bands like Tool now that Exit 111 is a thing? (Assuming it's a success)
Well since they got Tool back in ‘07 and they still sell tickets like crazy (fer reasons I will just never understand) I don’t think Exit 111 will have much of any bearin’ on future Bonnaroo’s. Also, since they’ve been talkin’ fer years now ‘bout doin’ more festivals/shows at Great Stage Park I would imagine they may try and diversify further lineups to differentiate between these two fests or others in the future.
I would hope ‘Roo continues to try and have a little bit of everythin’ from across the spectrum. Their (arguably) best and most successful years did this all too well.
Didn’t Vampire Weekend say there were waiting until next summer to hit the “big fests”. I know they bore some people on here and no one wants to put them as a headliner. But I honestly think they have a strong possibility of being a headliner even at Roo next year, just don’t see them being 4th since they were what like 5th in 2014. I’m fine with them being not billed as a headliner, just think it’s still gonna happen and be one of those things that pisses people off and be one of those yearly “they aren’t a headliner” type of acts we see on festival lineups all over.

I think you're being awfully optimistic about what it means for Roo, particularly its headliners, that there's a metal/hard rock festival on the same site a few months later. 2007 was some time ago. Bonnaroo has changed in several ways and made multiple pivots since then. GnR would have made for a mighty fine Bonnaroo headliner in years past, even maybe last year. Instead, they're headlining Louder Than Life Manchester. And Tool is even farther away from what I'd expect from a modern Bonnaroo.

I’m sure we all said we’d never expect modern Bonnaroo to book Phish last year too. Tool would be a sensible booking next to Tame and Kendrick imo. Not fully expecting it though, just a good top 3.

There is a ton of new album hype around VW, we'll have to see how that carries forward into next year.
Fwiw it appears the new live band is bigger and better.

Idk that I wouldn't have expected it. They booked Dead and Co three years ago. But if they had a full-fledged throwback to early-Roo jam festival entirely separate from Bonnaroo in October I would definitely expect that festival to be the one that booked Phish, which is analogous to what we're talking about with Tool and Exit 111.
The Cure - Travis Scott - Vampire Weekend - LSD (Labyrinth, SIA, Diplo) - Billie Eilish - Logic - Greta Van Fleet - Tipper - Counting Crows - Rezz
I'd be surprised if Billie accepts anything less than headliner slots moving forward.
yeah I can see that too. But the only other reference I’m going by is Life Is Beautiful having Billie above VW on that lineup. But both are technically headliners there as well just LIB’s has opposed headliners. So in Roos standard maybe she could be 5th or even 4th or be happy being those and play mostly unopposed like this year with like how Childish and Phish are. Like her on the What when it’s dark right before Travis Scott or something. I dunno, I could totally see her being the stereotypical “she’s not a headliner yet” as well. We’ll just have to wait and see.

She's sixth at ACL behind Cardi B, a lineup that came out like three weeks ago. I can see her as high as #2 in this group, though.
Agreed on the last part. I assume she was booked for ACL before dropping her album, and at time of booking I'm sure Cardi's profile was bigger. Billie has more success and therefore leverage now - courting that same group of artists that ACL has now would require a different strategy/cost. Coach HL Tame Impala is billed below Billie too.
As an aside, resale tickets for her shows are are ridiculous - mostly $250+ for the worst seats in smaller markets. Current low price at Radio City Music Hall is $491 on Stubhub. Someone can probably prove me wrong but of the top of my head I can't think of any artist in recent memory with nosebleeds reselling at a 900% markup.
Any word yet on what the ticket sales are like for this year? I hope they get 70k
I think we’ve still just got the rumors sayin’: “Ticket sales are very good this year.” But with them havin’ now gone to the final tier of ticket sales I would imagine this will be much more popular than 2016.
