Glad 'roo finally got a proper throwdown it sounds like. Not that '12 or '09 sucked or anything, but the farm deserves the A game.
Yeah. I’m going to rewatch both sets since it was free streamed and is up on YouTube now. Set 4 seemed doubly bomb, and before I go knocking something off my all time top 10 list, I’m going to have to re-evaluate it. I wish they wouldn’t have left that 15 minutes (?) or so on the table though I’m being greedy. For me, those sets highlighted and stamped the weekend in such a positive way. And maybe some of that was me on my last leg, loving life and Bonnaroo for those few hours more than I have in the past.
Friday night Phish show was one of the best shows of my life. Still not over that set. Sunday show didn’t let me down but was feeling Friday’s a bit more. Needless to say I am all in on Phish and cannot wait to go one of their shows again. Thanks to everyone who was helpful with gearing me up for this set. Not sure what the song was called but the one that started off like a space launch , that ish was wildd. Jesus y’all , I’m done now.

for halloween a few years back they covered a disney haunted house sound effects album. Martian Monster is from that set.

Thank you , I bet that set was super special ! They had me feeling like I was in outer space , just pure bliss. Any suggestions on delving a bit deeper into them ? I was thinking just picking random live albums from Apple Music.

Where to begin.... Friday took me a song or so to fully immerse myself into what I was seeing. I know that I really wanted to hear “More,” so when they started it I got so excited. By Sunday, I was committed to seeing both sets. Literally danced the entire time they played Sunday. I’m a 350+ pound guy, but my body was not still for a single second while they were on stage. I’ve never felt so high while being completely sober. My entire body, both physical and spiritual, felt like I was in some trance. Almost hypnotized by the music. I hate dancing in crowds, because I get embarrassed easily, but I could not control myself. I danced like the whitest guy on the planet. If you saw me (black sleeveless shirt and green Jeep hat), I’m sure I looked like an idiot, but for the first time in my life I was able to just cut loose and move around like no one was watching.
Phish at Bonnaroo was a magical experience for me, and I feel like I will be chasing the feelings I had this weekend for the rest of my life.

I love this post so much.
Do not worry about looking weird dancing. Ask snowman and stinky how insane I looked during set 2 Sunday.

This is a good 5-minute intro to Phish https://www.reddit.com/r/phish/comments/9ot9ed/welcome_to_phish_a_guide_for_beginners/
Both of those articles can be helpful for learning the language and history of the band.
This list on Phish.net, an incredibly thorough fan-run website that has all the data you'll ever need on the band, is a good starter list on picking out another great show to try. Click on the dates to see the set list for that night as well as notes about the show.
If there was a particular song from this weekend you just HAVE to hear again you can use the Music drop down on Phish.net to look up the song history. Click your song then click Jam Chart and it will list off all the notable versions of that song.
Just like The Dead, Phish has certain eras to their music. If you find a show you particularly like then listen to some other shows from that same tour. Phish fans love to argue about what the best tour was but they're all good. Buuuuuuuut if you really don't know where to start then Summer and Fall 97 can't hurt haha.

That’s awesome. And glad you got it! The best part of phish is you’ll never be judged for your dance moves or lack thereof.
The Tweezer from Friday is glorious. Trey’s melodic runs in that solo are life affirming.

Hi, my name is stinkyfingers and I'm now a Phish Phan. Definitely will be seeing them in the future (might not buy expensive seats, but I'll try to get in at least)
Friday I was supposed to meet up with snowman and 3post1jack1 in the pit, which would have been awesome because I'm a total Phish noob, and I really enjoy being around people who are knowledgeable about a subject and hearing what they think, and also to explain what's happening. I ended up staying in the pit with a new friend that I met that was also a total Phish noob, so it was a cool experience for us both to just be like wtf is happening while everyone else around us was a mega fan and going crazy lol. I only stayed for an hour and fifteen minutes so I could meet up with my crew, but that time just flew by I was loving it so much.
Sunday got into the pit again. Was with my noob friend again at the start, then PJ made it in, then I kept bugging snowman and he made it in for the second half of the set. I loved having one of them come up and be like "this song is going to be a fucking heater" or "this song has potential to go off" and they proceeded to be right. That encore though, my god. I think Wilson may have been my favorite song of the entire weekend, but I also didn't really know what songs were being played because I don't know Phish songs lol. I'm going to watch the Sunday set for sure, hope I can listen to the Friday set if it is available at some point. Great band, definitely my favorite headliner.

Full history of "Wilson" is linked, but the short version is that Wilson is the antagonist of the Gamehendge saga aka "The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday", which is a series of connected songs which form a narrative that Trey used for his senior project in college, and eventually became the backbone of Phish's catalog. Other songs were written later with elements of the Gamehendge story interwoven.
Wilson is played pretty frequently, as are some other Gamehendge songs (AC/DC Bag, Possum, Divided Sky, Llama, Punch You In The Eye) but many Gamehendge songs are rarely played and are considered "bust outs" when they are (The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday, typically played in sandwich format with Avenu Malkenu meat, The Lizards, Tela, Colonel Forbin's Ascent, Fly Famous Mockingbird, The Sloth, McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters, Icculus, and Kung).
The peak lyrical and musical moment of Wilson (I must inquire Wilson, CAN YOU STILL HAVE FUN?!) is a highlight anytime it is played. Glad you connected with it.

So much this! I'm 52 and was singing and dancing and having the best time. I am past caring what people think, and honestly the majority of people at Phish shows are just as happy to be there, and are not judging anyone. Friday night's set got my expectations way too high for Sunday, but Sunday was still great. These were my 24th and 25th shows
Postjack and Snowman it was great to meet you both (I was the one in the yellow dress with Druid).

Didn't see anyone on r/phish post the Bonnaroo poster. I snagged one and really like it! As far as alien landscapes go, its really colorful and serene. Looking forward to hanging it and there were only 650! I'm glad I got my face melted Friday shortly after the purchase.

I keep cracking up at my buddy's simple analysis of the Phish sets. He caught a bit of the Friday show as well as the Sunday set with me. He really enjoyed them, but at the end all he could think to say is "Phish is fuckin' weird, man." Lmao
I didn't make it to the Friday set, but these are my top 5 songs from Sunday's:
1. Cavern 2. Fluffhead 3. Blaze On 4. Fuego 5. No Men in No Man's Land HM to every other song they played.
Yep, I've been converted.
I was trying to figure this out when I was re-watching Sunday last night and couldn't do it. I loved the jam in Mike's Song into Fluffhead > Twist > WG > NMINML > WG > Twist > Fuego > Ghost > Bathtub Gin, but I also loved the Blaze On thru Cavern in Set 1. So I couldn't do it. I just smiled again most of the show.
My only complaint about Sunday is I wanted more Weekapaug. But that entire set is the shit.
there really weren't any long jams, except the "Everything's Right" jam on Friday was very pretty.
but at no point during either show was i concerned about jams getting rip corded, which I have been at other shows. everything flowed so well, it didn't feel like anything was being cut off. band was definitely in the groove, the choices all made sense in the greater context of the sets.
although that was a really short Carini. would've been a hell of a thing for that jam to pass to the 20 minute mark. still i can't think of a more appropriate and absurd way to open a show to a crowd chock full of newbies.
deegleberry when those first notes of Carini hit i immediately thought of you and this thread. sorry we didn't connect this weekend, hopefully we'll both make it to the next roo (or we'll catch up at another Phish show).

Watching Sunday on YouTube last night, and I immediately thought of what you said your boy said in that it was intentional. I came away with "deliberate" in a good way. You could see that Trey knew exactly what they wanted to accomplish with the crowd mixed with first timers, casual fans and even lots of seasoned vets (you can see the "Wilson" calls in the encore, and it's way more than 1/2 the crowd). They were going to show that they knew how to do the shows and what they would mean for both Phish and Bonnaroo taking the chance of giving whomever Phish is and why he got 3 sets the opportunity to make a giant mark on and for Bonnaroo. Obviously this was accomplished. Unfortunately the camerapersons didn't necessarily focus in on the crowd. But there are a few times where you get wide shots where you see people literally going nuts. And when Mike and Trey would pogo, you'd see most of the crowd that you could see doing the same. I was trying to figure out where this ending to a festival stacks up against the 40-50 festivals I've been to. The only thing I could think of that maybe gave it a run for its money was Foo Fighters closing Voodoo in 2014. When you go out with a smile and know you as a fan gave it all you had too, it's just some kind of way satisfying. Phish's Sunday closing set went beyond satisfying and left the opposite taste in my mouth that I had at 6:00am Thursday while setting up camp.
