"A sick and twisted, evil monster. At first, it sounds like the band is content to tinker with the basic song. But at about 8:00, Fish and Mike hook up and develop a high-power, pulsing and driving base. Chaos ensues, as spacey effects, unusual keyboards, and sick Mike create a throbbing, mind-blowing sensory assault."
I figure one year I try it out. I was only at the Roo '12 show for like 20 minutes before wandering off with Scrog and LLL to meet up with other people.
Ive done one Phish show 6 years ago at SPAC. It was actually the last time I was at SPAC. I liked them well enough but the company was lackluster. It’ll be fun to get a different experience.
If we end up doing the Fenway shows, it’ll be both nights so let me know if you decide to go and which night.
Probably the Friday. Less likely to interfere with other plans.
I like the slower ones that don’t use the piano as much in the front, because I think it gives the jam a bouncey feel that I don’t care for.
all studio tracks. let me know if the link is broken, i can't see spotify embeds at work. i interpreted slow as slower tempo, so i tried not to include any frenetic phish tracks. also tried to keep it short because phish fans have a tendency to recommend several hours of listening and that can be overwhelming.
thx for this. I liked most of them (mostly Waiting All Night and The Moma Dance), but I still don't like their goofier ones like Weigh. I feel like they aren't funny enough to be Ween and their more serious ones aren't good enough to be Dead songs. The lyrics are often in this weird area where I don't know how to enjoy it and it just sits weirdly with me. What are some of the better live ones like these? I really enjoy the Waiting All Night from the 12/30/15 MSG album.

no problem, it's fun putting these together. thanks for listening.
you're not alone in having difficulty with the lyrics, which IMO are made even more difficult to digest because nobody in phish is a technically strong vocalist.
i'll put together a playlist of slower and/or prettier live ones like this with some jams and post it here later.
So I’m sitting here on the toilet watching some live phish and I realize a phish show is kinda like pro wrestling. They discuss certain spots they want to hit. They each let each other get their moves/solos in, most of it is improvised and called out on the spot. Realizing this made me like them even more. The nature boy Trey Anastasio
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Anybody ever listen to the Analyze Phish podcast with Harris Wittels and Scott Aukerman? I'm considering checking it out
It's wonderful for fans and non-fans alike.
3 episodes in and I'm enjoying it a good deal! I've been in both Harris' and Scott's position at different times during discussions of different bands, for sure. Plus Harris is a huge sweetie and Scott seems less manic and more willing to share the spotlight than he does nowadays on CBB
hampton comes alive was an early phish album purchase of mine, about six months before i saw phish for the first time. this Divided Sky is still my favorite. i know the early 90s Divided Skys probably rip harder, but i love this one. i'm always so exhausted after i listen to it.
this has nothing to do with bonnaroo but i just started jamming in a garage band with some 20-something dudes from ASU. everyone gets to pick 2 songs for the initial "jam list" and one of the ones I picked was Character Zero. Looking forward to hashing out a jam on that with a couple dudes who grew up on like, late 00's pop punk and the killers. luckily they're both band nerds, so they are talented, but I'm 98% sure that this the first phish song they've heard.

happy ten year anniversary of the beginning of 3.0!
for the newbies, this is a video of the first opening song phish played at their reunion show, 3/6/2009 at Hampton Coliseum. Their first time playing together since August 2004.
the choice of "Fluffhead" to open was significant for two reasons:
1. Before this performance, "Fluffhead" had not been performed live since 9/29/2000. I think it was at the "It" festival that there was a huge push from the audience to play "Fluffhead". On stage Trey appeared to "ask Mike" if he wanted to play Fluffhead, to which Trey told the crowd "Mike said no". We learned much later Mike was totally fine with playing the song, Trey was just being a dick. Furthermore, Fluffhead is an extremely difficult song to play (just listen to it above), and it's possible Trey didn't have the chops at that point to play it.
2. "Fluffhead" is about a fictional character addicted to pills. Trey got busted a few years before this performance with a bunch of pills, after which he got clean, which led to Phish reuniting.
i have never been in a room with that much energy. you can heard the crowd shouting the lyrics in the video, it was insane. and when the song peaks (final build up starts at the 12 minute mark), oh man. shit. ten years later i still get teary-eyed thinking about it.

Phish has an extremely fascinating history to me. From the early Gamehenge stuff to Coventry and the return, its a lot to absorb. But I appreciate the really significant moments. Thanks for sharing 3post1jack1
I’m more excited about phish at Bonnaroo this year than I’ve been about any band at Bonnaroo in a few years. I’m just more excited about Bonnaroo than I’ve been about Bonnaroo in a few years

if we want Icculus at Bonnaroo, all we have to do is hire a plane to fly around with a sign that says "Read The Book" over Great Stage Park, like fans did at Dicks 2013.
Another two years and 82 shows would pass before “Icculus” made a rare appearance in the (distant) shadow of the mountains, at Dick’s. The 2013 Friday night Dick’s performance – the now traditional “spelling” show – was “MOST SHOWS SPELL SOMETHING,” backwards. “It’s Ice” would have been the safe call, “Izabella” would have been bold, but this was a night for “Icculus.” A group of fans had organized to hire a skywriter, but settled on a trailing sign from a small plane that indicated we all should READ THE BOOK. Trey referenced the plane, the youth and upbringing of the band members, and all of our deep and layered love for Dick’s in this stirring and just-rare-enough admonition to READ THE FUCKING BOOK!
PHISH, FRIDAY 08/30/2013 DICK'S SPORTING GOODS PARK Commerce City, CO SET 1: Ghost, NICU, Icculus, Heavy Things, Theme From the Bottom > Esther, The Moma Dance > Ocelot, Stash, Lawn Boy, Limb By Limb, Easy To Slip[1]
SET 2: Punch You in the Eye > Sand, Say Something > Walls of the Cave > The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony > Harry Hood[2] -> Silent in the Morning[2] > Twist > Slave to the Traffic Light
ENCORE: Oh! Sweet Nuthin' > Meatstick
[1] Phish debut. [2] Unfinished. This show was webcast via LivePhish. Prior to Heavy Things, Trey noted that it shared the same chords as Icculus, but had very different lyrics. This show featured the Phish debut of Easy To Slip. Sand included an Also Sprach Zarathustra tease from Fish. Hood and Silent were unfinished. This show featured the first performance of Oh Sweet Nuthin' since August 15, 2010 (120 shows). Continuing a tradition of wordplay at shows performed at Dick's, the first letters of the songs played at this show in reverse order revealed the message "Most Shows Spell Something."
what i love about this video is when Trey walks over to Page you can see him audible "Icculus" and Page laughs then Trey laughs. such a stupid song. i love it.

I cry on the reg at shows. Just going to focus on the times Phish got me teary-eyed. By no means exhaustive, but these are the moments I remember the most vividly:
Phish 3/6/2009 Hampton Coliseum, Hampton VA - Phish's comeback show after being broken up for five years. Opened with "Fluffhead", a major moment in the Phish canon that I won't get into here, but it was a big deal. However I didn't cry during "Fluffhead", it was the next song, those opening notes to "Divided Sky", that got me.
Phish 10/31/2009 Empire Polo Club, Indio CA - Again 2009 was Phish's comeback year, and I saw them 10 times that year. There was the Hampton reunion shows, summer tour, and then they doubled down on Phish tradition by throwing their first festival since the comeback AND they put it on Halloween. The "musical costume" set was the Rolling Stones "Exile on Main Street". Most of those songs were FTP, but "Loving Cup" had been a Phish staple for a long time. A great song, but considered overplayed. But in the context of the musical costume set it was a different animal. I hate to admit glowsticks made me cry, but right when the peak lyric "what a beautiful buzz" was sang, an explosion of glowsticks in the first hundred rows or so show straight into the air. I wasn't ready for it and it was surprisingly beautiful. The bigness of the whole reunion year washed over me at that point, and for the first time I really accepted that this was real and Phish was back. It was a remarkably instantaneous transition from fear that I was going to lose this band and this community again to joy that we weren't going anywhere for a long time.
Phish 1/3/2015 American Airlines Arena, Miami FL - Transition from Maze > Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley. This was less of an emotional cry and more of a manic my whole body was shaking cry. It was just such a stunning and smooth transition that it shocked my whole body, my skin flushed and goosebumps went up everywhere and tears lept into my eyes.
Phish 8/21/2015 Watkins Glen International, Watkins Glen NY - Day one of the Magnaball festival. Opening notes to "The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday" slayed me. I was with my #1 Phish buddy, and we hadn't gotten a TMWSIY since our first show together six years earlier.
Phish 9/4/2016 Dick's Sporting Goods Park, Commerce City CO - Towards the end of an absolutely relentless jam filled "fan" set, they came out of a calm and spacey "Light" jam and started playing "The Lizards". The crowd went insane, I was on the floor close to the stage and ended up hugging some stranger standing next to me and we both cried.
Phish 8/6/2017 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY - Last night of the 13 night Baker's Dozen run. Encore was "On The Road Again" > "Lawn Boy Reprise" > "Tweezer Reprise". Cried during "On The Road Again", laughed during "Lawn Boy Reprise", cried again during "Tweezer Reprise"
self quoting but the cry thread got bumped and it made me think of fluffhead. forgot i started crying at those first notes of Divided Sky following Fluffhead.
Yea I've literally fell in love with Phish since they were announced on this lineup...And do you wanna know the funny thing? I was at Bonnaroo 2009 and I saw Public Enemy instead of seeing them for their latenight Friday set! Oh what could have been if i found out how amazing Phish was 10 years ago. But yea, they're everything I love about music wrapped up into an engaging band.

I watched the first 2/3rds of both 2009 Phish shows. Kicking myself for not staying through the end, especially that Friday with YEM, Wilson, Harry Hood, Highway to Hell and Day in the Life. But I was in no way a phan at that point. I just liked a few songs.
In 2012, I made it almost all the way to the last song, but I partied harder that year and we were literally sitting in the rain exhausted from the weekend. Also, 2012 wasn't as impressive imo.
This year, I do want Phish to fight their festival reputation of not doing extended jams. Give me something long and freaky please.
