We're leaving tomorrow for a few days in New Braunfels. It's either leave at midnight and drive overnight if Person x can make it. If not, we leave in the early afternoon in a way to not catch crazy Baton Rouge or Houston traffic. If it's the second, I'm going to try to hit up one of the El Tiempos close to the I-10 on the way through Houston. I had that when we came to town for Day 4 Night 2017, and I thought it was pretty tasty. I would have liked to try Peli Peli again, but it appears they closed all their locations which kind of sucks since it had some unique South African flavors (Portuguese based). We'll hit up random shit in the southern part of Hill Country, so I'll be looking to grab some Tex Mex and BBQ out that way (hopefully Burn Bean Co. in Seguin again).
If your looking for some awesome mexican/breakfast at a hole in the wall spot Monterrey Cafe is our go-to in New Braunfels... The owners are Salvadoran so they also have great pupusas.
There's nothing inherently wrong with El Tiempo (aside from probably being a little overpriced), but it's funny that with all the game you talk about authentic Mexican food you're going to a chain when you pass through Houston.
My boy Brad who lived in Houston for a couple years recommended I try it when I was over there 12/17. I got Uber Eats and the quality of ingredients and all flavors was good. So that’s what I knew there but had to look up the actual name in the D4N thread to get the name again. After I got it I went online to look at the menu and saw they had all those locations but assumed it was all local (I’m not against local chains that are good). I figured it would be easy enough to swing through on the way to NB since we’d be possibly be running through around dinner time. I did once eat at some super weird outside place off Uvalde in East Houston one Sunday afternoon. I don’t know the name of that place, but it was pretty good besides the local hustlers trying to sell knock off cologne and shit.
I’m not from Houston. If I was going to be spending time there, I’d probably ask for y’all’s recommendation for something ultra authentic from any of their regional cuisines and most likely invite you to come eat. But I figured I’d be 5 1/2 hours on the road at that point and shorts and a T-shirt. By all means if there is somewhere easy near I-10 you think is better and more worth stopping at, that’s more the type of callout I’d appreciate.
Also if your bouncing around Hill Country one of our favorite spots to stop and grab a drink and relax is The Shady Llama north of Wimberly
Greek food fest at the local orthodox church was last weekend. they were out of moussaka (eggplant) so I broke from the vegetarian to get some lamb chops, pastisio, and souvalkia sampler. plus some spanikopita. it's always delicious food and fun to see the youth group do (and teach) traditional greek dances.
just finished off the last of the baclava and kataifi this afternoon. shoulda bought more.

Had Costco sushi for lunch and a little nervous now. Surely it's safer than gas station sushi, right? The flavor was clean (not fishy) but could've used a boost for sure.
I was craving poke and should've gone that route instead.

I didn't die and it tasted okay. Probably wouldn't re-purchase because local spots are much tastier.
Also got a "regular" size poke bowl and couldn't even finish it over two days because it was ENORMOUS.
The tartare was delectable. Strawberries and sesame seeds in some kind of vinaigrette. Delicious. This spot rules. Staff were some of the friendliest people I've ever met.
Good shit. I plan to try to go to Spain at some point. It seems like there are very distinctive cities there and cuisines as well. Lots of different cultural influences from the Basques, Moors, Spanish, Mediterranean Sea, French, Catalans, North African, etc. Between Seville, Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, etc. - makes it a country I want to eat my way through at some point. Hope y'all soak up as much as you can while there.
I went to the cajun/coon-ass crawfish place yesterday to get some boiled sides. They had containers of garlic-ginger-chili butter which I thought was awesome in that Viet-Cajun is intermingling with Cajun in their own (Cajun) places rather than just in the Vietnamese places.

what do you all eat when it's too hot to cook? i'm not a big salad person, so i've been just eating plates of fruit and vegetables with cheese almost every day. not turning on the oven when even the dog doesn't want to go outside to pee.

Me too! I had cheese, hummus, veggie, pickled eggs and nuts the other night, and last night a room temperature soup that I made from Konjac noodles, broth, ginger, garlic, chicken made on the Foreman, veggies and pickled onion garnish. Both kept the house cool and weren't overwhelming. I also like cold kidney bean salad.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Pastas not too bad, just have to boil water real quick.
Sandwiches are always good too.
$5 cheese pizza from the corner spot is always there too.

Hummus wraps. Garbanzo based Mediterranean salads > traditional salads. Gazpacho. Make your own pickles/ ferment anything. Spicy soups help with the heat and can be done with an electric kettle.
Good news, postjack! You are a mere 25 blocks from a great bagel! Let's go!
It's a gorgeous day and a 20 min walk. *shrugs*
Lol, Pablo's post made me laugh but I do appreciate the help. We ended up in a time crunch this morning so hit the closest place (bagel co I think?) and it was solid. Wasn't Russ and Daughters level but we all enjoyed it.

The nice thing about a bagel in NYC is that it’s still better than any other bagel in the country
I tried a new Greek place up the street from work today and down the street from Simple Greek which is more fast casual. It was called Olive. It was solid though not super great or anything. In New Orleans, I'd put it slightly above Mona's (which is Lebanese but pretty similar) and around Cleo's (Egyptian but also similar). I had the chicken kabob (chunks of grilled yellow chicken) that came with a Greek salad and hummus/pita and got a side of basmati rice because I love that shit. Rice was slightly lumpy, but I fork separated those couple lumps, and it was fine. 2.5-3 out of 5. I'd definitely go back again at some point considering it's only a block from the office.
