I think for a fast casual chain Torchy's is pretty great, tbh. Most stuff I've had there is good. Brisket taco (Democrat), fried avocado, tempura shrimp are my go-tos. Their queso is just ok.
Taco Cabana isn't bad like Taco Bell or anything, but it still comes off like fast food to me. My thing (and this is more about Torchy's) is that it's good enough. But I've had way better tacos at food trucks. And there are enough cheap places like Taco Express or some of the Mexican or Tex/Mex places to eat at in Austin that I never really look to eat Torchy's though we have over the years.

I stan Taco Cabana and like their brisket tacos, too, but Torchy's are better, as far as a one-to-one comp. Taco Cabana is fast food. Taco C's chipotle ranch or whatever it is is great, and their queso is better than Torchy's. Torchy's Diablo sauce is genuinely spicy and dope though.
And yes, we are all aware that there are better and more authentic Tex-Mex places. Feels like I gotta say that any time this kind of thing comes up.
Props to both for selling booze, but Torchy's has a full bar, because it's closer to being a real restaurant. Another plus.

Oh we always drive-thru Taco Cabana and get the gauc and queso. LOL I had the brisket taco the first time I ever went.

I'm just waiting for a third location of Fat Bao, hopefully on the north side of town this time. I always describe it to people as Torchy's but with bao:

I’d say it’s one thing if you live in Texas and are looking for a quick, familiar type meal, but it’s something else for me as a visitor to seek it out. Hopefully people don’t come here and think, “damn I need to go to Copeland’s.”

Taco C is good because any location worth its salt will be open 24 hours. Some trucks are, too, but TC is mostly just great late night food/road food.
My local truck has some great, extremely thick quesadillas and is open 24 hours. It's like two meals, almost. I get lengua when they have it, barbacoa if they don't. But weirdly, their burritos are too small and I'd honestly rather get one from TC.
Looks like it's me and my 3 kids for Thanksgiving. Their mom has to work but has promised us she would make some sweet potato crunch (basically candied sweet potatoes topped by pecans and brown sugar). None of us really like turkey all that much, so we decided to do a rotisseried roast, gravy, mashed potatoes, shrimp and breadcrumb stuffed bell peppers (or mirlitons), corn/shrimp/crab soup and some pies and pumpkin (pulp) spiced cookies. Thanksgiving enough for me. No one volunteered to make some funky ass green bean casserole - which I will usually get a couple of spoonfuls of just because - and I'm okay with that.

So many people in Louisiana think that is fine dining btw. Especially those in areas like Houma or Lafayette. They don't know any better.
Haha, for sure. Those are mostly necks because there are a few good places to eat in Houma, and certainly Lafayette is a dining paradise in my opinion. I'm not eating some chain shit if I'm there, that's for sure. It's going to be Charlie G's, iMonelli, Cafe Vermillionville, Nash's or whatever.

Pablo,
I got your take on Taco Cabana being (often) 24 hours and a good late night go-to place. But I can't tell you how many times friends in Austin raved about Whataburgers for the same reason. Why people think that's elevated beyond MuckDonalds or Corporate King - except they sometimes have good toppings/fixings - is beyond me. Steak 'n Shake, also not that good, kind of blows them away in my opinion for late night options.
I’ve been sitting here trying to think of some regional chains and all I got was Stewart’s and Friendly’s.
I didn't realise until fairly recently that both The 99 & Bickford's are regional chains. And a quick Google shows me that Bickford's is down to its last two locations (it used to be around 70 or 80).
I forgot to pull out the ham and then realized it would be such a waste since I don't eat it and thejeremy will have to eat the whole fucking thing. So Thanksgiving is now non-traditional (food-wise, nothing is traditional this year). Thanks 2020

The wife and I are doing the responsible thing and staying home for Tgiving, which means that I have to make the turkey (she's a vegetarian), which I have never done. I am panicking. I have a fresh turkey in the fridge, I'm planning on dry brining tomorrow, but I already know that's not long enough. I can't decide whether I'm smoking, grilling, or roasting it. Panic level is a solid 3.5 here.
Very excited for the creamy brussels sprouts and wild mushroom dish that we are making though.
