K.Flay is an American songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist whose music is an introspective, empowering blend of hip-hop, indie rock, and electronic music. Born Kristine Meredith Flaherty near Chicago in 1985, she first grabbed the mic while a student at Stanford University in California. She dropped her debut mixtape, 2004's laptop-recorded Suburban Rap Queen, and attracted local attention with her performances.
After graduating, she moved to San Francisco and continued to develop her style. Her second mixtape, Mashed Potatoes, appeared in 2009 with backing tracks that were more electro- and indie-oriented. She also collaborated with MC Lars that year, releasing an EP titled Single and Famous. These releases were followed by a self-titled 2010 EP and 2011's I Stopped Caring in '96, a personal breakthrough that inspired her to pursue music as a career. K.Flay signed to RCA Records in 2012, issuing Eyes Shut that year; the EP included two songs co-produced by Liam Howlett of the Prodigy. Following the self-released mixtape West Ghost, the What If It Is EP arrived on RCA in 2013 and included a guest appearance by Danny Brown. After leaving RCA Records in 2013, her crowd-sourced, independently released full-length debut, Life as a Dog charted in Billboard's Top 200 albums. She then became the first artist signed to Night Street and released the Nashville-recorded Crush Me EP in 2016.
In April 2017, K.Flay released her sophomore album, Every Where Is Some Where, which yielded the Grammy-nominated single "Blood in the Cut." Her new single, "Bad Vibes," arrived in early 2019, with her next album, Solutions, set to be released on July 12.

K.Flay was my first Bonnaroo set back in 2012 so even though I didn’t listen to her before and haven’t listened to her since, I think she is the greatest thing to ever grace the farm in Bonnaroo’s history. I thought the show was great and she was super talented and stuff, but I was still in a state of awe and wonderment being at my first festival so take my opinions with a grain of salt. Back in the day, K.Flay mainly did the rap-a-rap-rap-rappin’. I thought she was a decent enough front woman with some technical skill, but I was mainly amazed by the twenty one pilots-type antics that she added to her performance. I mean, adding extra drums or gradually spitting fire faster and faster may seem pretty gimmicky, but 20-year-old me thought it was DOPE! She had a touring drummer with her and one of those Speak & Spell type pads set up to drop her SICK BEATS. These days, it looks like K.Flay has added a full band and does singing pop type things. I’m sure she will be just as SICK to a first time Roovian this year!
That 2012 set was so dope! I can't believe she played at the Silent Disco and now she is a Grammy nominated artist. Honestly her alternative hip hop style feels like a precursor to Twenty One Pilots. This is one of my most anticipated sets.
