What's your thought process on this? I've never heard a good faith opposition to this.
I'm not against it, per se, but I don't think it's the best idea in making elections more accessible. First, I prefer other methods of increasing accessibility - auto registration, no fault absentee ballots, vote by mail, early voting, all the VRA stuff with preclearance. I think those get to the idea of increasing access in a better way. Secondly, making Election Day a federal holiday would ensure that banks, schools, and other white collar places would close, but wouldn't guarantee that retail shops and restaurants would close, which doesn't solve the problem for blue collar workers. It also would lead to people needing to get child care for kids if schools were closed, or taking the day off if their workplace wasn't closed.
Those are all fair points. I definitely support auto registration and expanded access/stronger push for early voting and generally anything that would make sure as many people as possible go vote.
Robert Mueller is going to testify before the House Committee on July 17
Just saw this. Hope it has an impact.
The special counsel Robert Mueller has agreed to testify before Congress next month.
Mueller agreed to testify before the House judiciary committee and House permanent select committee on intelligence in an open session on 17 July, the chairmen of the committees announced on Tuesday, in what is likely to be the most highly anticipated congressional hearing in years.
“Americans have demanded to hear directly from the Special Counsel so they can understand what he and his team examined, uncovered, and determined about Russia’s attack on our democracy, the Trump campaign’s acceptance and use of that help, and President Trump and his associates’ obstruction of the investigation into that attack,” the House judiciary committee chairman, Jerrold Nadler, and House intelligence committee chairman, Adam Schiff, said in a joint statement.
“We look forward to hearing his testimony, as do all Americans,” they added.

It should be a holiday, for sure, but not everyone gets federal holidays off.
They should bring election booths to your place of work.
Or.. New Zealand has booths in grocery stores. If you could vote at your local Wal-Mart, why wouldn't you?
Or.. Vote from your phone. This is completely possible. It should really be that easy. If we're going to hand over as much faith to the tech companies as we already do, we/they should be able to come up with a voting infrastructure that is secure.

We can vote from our phones and laptops here. It's a lot more secure than people think - there's a whole verification process to confirm your identity. Elections are also on a Saturday so that more people can vote. It's 100x more sensible than when I would have to drive home from college, wait in line, and drive back on a random Tuesday.
The nice thing about voting in NY is that polls are open from 6 AM to 9 PM. A lot of people can find the time in that window, IMO. Also, not sure if it's federal or NYS but employers have to allow a certain amount of time for their employees to vote if requested. Three hours, I think.
None of this is to say it shouldn't be easier still to register and vote, of course...
His brain is deteriorating at an accelerated rate. Thread.
LMFAO. I guess he doesn't like that Mueller is testifying. To the supporters: if the whining about spying and most illegal stuff of all times doesn't tell you how full of **** they are, you remain an ignorant moron.

Pretty cool that nobody seems worried about Biden not releasing his taxes. Something makes me think certain members of the Dems and the media arn't on the level.
Speaking of voter registration, Tennessee is trying to suppress registration drive efforts with tedious additional requirements and penalties.
The article isn’t particularly well written, all the controversial parts are at the bottom
Reminds me a lot of GOP talking points in the Georgia Governor's race. One way they to spin things was to question the legitamacy of voter registration drives and imply they were somehow criminal or working to register illigal immigrants. I'm sure that will continue and we might see simular laws to this here.
So,basically, they had legal ways to suppress voters already and spun legit complaints so they fell under the umbrella of those laws. As if it was an example of the system working correctly. Of course that soothed it over with white people... for what little they might have cared.

We've got like 4 hours, we can certainly come up with one:
1. Drink at any mention of Bob Mueller or the Mueller Report. 2. Drink every time Liz Warren says "I have a plan for that". 3. Drink every time Andrew Yang or Marianne Williamson speaks, for the duration of the answer. 4. Drink every time someone proposes to abolish ICE.

A quite fascinating breakdown of how far-right rhetoric proliferates and expresses itself on the internet through sites like 4chan. Goes into a bit of the psychology behind your typical "I drink liberal tears" douchebag as well as the linguistic techniques that are used to "win" arguments online.

We each select 3 candidates.
Each time one of your candidates...
Goes over their allotted time, drink for the amount of extra time they are taking. Interrupts another candidate, drink. Flexs their poor NRA Grade, chug. Completely avoids a question, drink. Attacks a Dem candidate that is not present on the same night, drink. Gets booed or silence after what they thought would be an applause line, chug Doesn't get to speak for an entire break, chug If your candidate doesn't mention more than 2 specific policy proposals that they stand for by the end of the night, shotgun a beer
General Rules that prompt a drink...
Mueller Report Mentions Abolish ICE Moderators attempt to paint Bernie, Warren or Gabbard as extremists Someone is asked how they would pay for something Someone attempts to align with Obama Jokes about how many candidates are present Candidates mention that they voted for Bernie in '16.
Democrats infuriated that Sanders has the gall to run again, yet have nothing to say about Biden's history and the inconsistencies in other campaigns might be the end of a lot of friendships this primary season.
Somehow they believe so strongly that Sanders cost them their anointed ones election, and they can't see that.
They can't see they created an idol that fell, out of hubris, and the perfect storm of events.
And a racist and sexist nation that needs to come to terms with it during it's massive influence on world politics.
There's such a huge disconnect between me and my white Democratic friends here in NY/NJ - and it scares the fucking shit out of me.

This is what republicans want.
A woman whose unborn baby was killed in a 2018 Pleasant Grove shooting has now been indicted in the death.
Marshae Jones, a 27-year-old Birmingham woman, was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on a manslaughter charge. She was taken into custody on Wednesday.
Though Jones didn’t fire the shots that killed her unborn baby girl, authorities say she initiated the dispute that led to the gunfire. Police initially charged 23-year-old Ebony Jemison with manslaughter, but the charge against Jemison was dismissed after the grand jury failed to indict her.
The shooting happened about noon on Dec. 4, 2018, outside Dollar General on Park Road. Officers were dispatched to the scene on a report of someone shot but arrived to find the shooting victim – later identified as Jones - had been picked up and driven to Fairfield. Police and paramedics then found the Jones at a Fairfield convenience store.
From Fairfield Jones was taken to UAB Hospital. She was five months pregnant and was shot in the stomach. The unborn baby did not survive the shooting.
“The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby,’’ Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid said at the time of the shooting. “It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby.”
Police said the fight stemmed over the unborn baby’s father.
Reid said the fight stemmed over the unborn baby’s father. The investigation showed, he said, that it was Jones who initiated and pressed the fight, which ultimately caused Jemison to defend herself and unfortunately caused the death of the baby.
"Let’s not lose sight that the unborn baby is the victim here,’’ Reid said. “She had no choice in being brought unnecessarily into a fight where she was relying on her mother for protection." Jones will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail where she will be held on $50,000 bond.
