On the question of whether co-writing counts as real songwriting, Liam had this to say:

Which is fine, but the homophobia, misogyny and xenophobia is a bad look.
i'm only about halfway through the WTF episode so i haven't gotten to that part yet, just kind of heard rumblings about it. i'll have to keep listening.
but based on the interview so far it's hard to see eliot as someone who is truly homophobic, misogynist, xenophobic, etc.

to expand on the above a bit, like when he's talking about Texas he is absolutely dripping with rage and disgust at Texas politicians. and his regret at not being more of an activist when he was young. it seems clear where Sam is politically and culturally.
just a guess, but I would feel super positive suggesting he probably holds spaghetti westerns in high regard so getting bent out of shape about location or someone not from the US directing westerns make me feel like he really just is pissed about the gay thing

I haven't seen the movie so I shouldn't comment, but it's a bit weird to me that the realism of the masculinity of cowboys is some big personal affront to him yet he was ok acting in Ghost Rider with Nicholas Cage as a CGI demon riding a motorcycle.
Like a repressed cowboy walking around with no shirt is totally unrealistic but Ghost Rider selling his soul to Mephisto is acceptable non-fiction.

It's also weird because 1) it's based on a book from the 60's, so it's not as if she made up the plot and 2) they wanted to shoot in Montana, but with covid they had to shoot it in NZ. I mean, what, is Sam Elliot also going to complain about Thor: Love and Thunder not being in the REAL part of the multiverse because it was filmed in NZ and Australia?

I also think this is one of many cases where the person saying something that's divisive or a hot take doesn't fully realize how far his words will spread when just shooting the shit on a podcast. Like, it's much more informal than a regular interview or press junket and I could see all this backlash being very surprising to him. At least the amount of it.
Haven't seen the movie yet either so can't really comment on that too much. Love Sam Elliot but hopefully it's more of a case of him putting his foot in his mouth and not some deeply held anti-gay feelings. Wouldn't be surprised if there's an apology or clarification coming

I remember a coworker a couple years ago expressing his disdain for CK's "punishment", calling it overblown. I said "he'll be back, the system is in his favor". And here we are, a little over 4 years later. Back to awards.
