I have been to every single day of every Firefly since year one, and I am already definitely not going again this year.
It was a fun tradition for 8 years, but I’m older now and the lineups seem too inconsistent and also catered more towards pop than I am willing to pay for anymore (as well as travel and use vacation time).
Last year was the first year I bought pre-sale tickets, and what a mistake. Had I not done that it’s likely I might not have gone in 2019 either.
What about last year has me passing up an 8 year tradition?
For starters, the lineup. While the opinion on here is largely anti-Firefly, I’m not going to lie and say “I think it’s sucked the last few years.” I thought 2018 was an awesome an eclectic mix of artists, and was probably one of my favorite years.
I had been disappointed with 2017’s lineup at first, but after that weekend my opinion was %100 changed and I was blown away by Muse, Andy Frasco and the U.N., Naked and Famous, Franz Ferdinand, The Weeknd was really good, seeing Bob Dylan (regardless of how good it was) was cool, and then Flume, Benny Benassi,Sam Feldt, Dillon Francis and Alan Walker were all a lot of fun.
And every year before 2017 stands up IMO and I don’t need to justify it.
But this year just didn’t move me the way other years did. Right from the get-go the lineup didn’t impress me. There were wayyyy too many repeat acts, and a lot of them hadn’t grown in relevance since any of their previous Firefly performances (a lot of the artists had already been at FF twice before).
The headliners didn’t excite me at all. I’m not a Travis Scott fan but I will say his performance was pretty cool. PATD was exactly what you would expect and I have to say I could have turned on a local radio station playing their music and had about the same experience.
Post Malone had been hyped up to me by people saying “once you see it you will get it” but that didn’t happen. He was just average. Not bad, but not worth the money and time I invested to be there.
I did see a lot of awesome bands. Unknown Mortal Orchestra was amazing (they always are, it was my 3rd time seeing them), Vampire Weekend was great, Car Seat Headrest/Naked Giants we’re awesome, Thumpasaurus became one of my favorite bands and I filmed their whole set. Ripe was really fun, Two Feet was cool. DJ Snake was awesome. Passion Pit was alright (it was nice finally seeing them at Firefly without there being any issues).
In terms of DJ’s I thought Louis the Child was cool, DJ Snake blew my mind, Medasin was good, 4B was cool, and I was rolling during Zedd so I thought he was amazing.
A lot of the DJ’s suffered from not being in the pavilion though. 4B in the blazing sun was not very fun. It seemed kind of stupid in my opinion to add so much lighting and shit to a stage that would really only benefit from the improvements for 3-4 artists a day (if that) and the rest of the time it didn’t make a difference.
Losing the pavilion was a huge blow and whoever decided to do that should seriously be fired. It was just dumb and unnecessary.
The Roost (or whatever the barn was called) had AC which was nice, and we saw Lee Fields put on a great set there, but otherwise it was just sort of like... okay.
The crowd itself was weird. While Firefly has a reputation for being a frat bro fest (which it has definitely earned), this year didn’t seem overly crazy (like the year with the 17-18 year olds in North Camping fucked up on cocaine that destroyed their truck and tried starting shit with people all weekend), but instead was just awkward due to the amount of very young people there with their parents.
This was definitely because of the headliners. My 52 year old mom and 17 year old sister love Post Malone and had seen him up at Six Flags Darien Lake somewhere between 2018-2019. Sunday was like being surrounded by my mom and little sister. It was extremely uncomfortable and awkward (to the point that I was to say it was like high school, painfully awkward which all of these people were) and extremely vanilla. I go to a music festival to “let my hair down” so to speak, smoke weed and get drunk and just chill. It’s hard to do when you’re surrounded by a bunch of housewives and their teenage kids who all look like they looked up a Coachella hashtag on Instagram and tried their best to be that.
The vanilla atmosphere made me feel uncomfortable, and it was the first time I actually felt weird packing a bowl and blazing at Firefly (it was also the first time I didn’t have a single person in the crowd ask me if they could take a hit). In terms of smoking, so many of the teenagers (I’m only 26 btw) had dab pens and e-cigs, and the smell was getting nauseating at points from so many people doing them. I feel like such an old man but my fiancé and I agreed we were longing for the smell of some plain old dank herbs.
Back to what I said about repeat artists, I believe I made a list in the 2019 thread of all of the artists that had played previous Firefly’s, and how many times they had played.
Bands like AWOLNATION and Death Cab for Cutie weren’t BAD imo, but they also hadn’t really changed much up from any of their previous Firefly performances. This goes for a lot of the repeat artists.
The bathroom situation (and honestly the hub itself) in North Camping were honestly pretty lame. The bathroom situation especially sucked. There were so few bathrooms throughout North Camping, having to piss in the middle of the night sucked, and god forbid you had to shit because you couldn’t just do that in the grass (or at least wouldn’t if you had respect for those around you).
TLDR: Firefly just doesn’t offer enough anymore. Some cool bands yeah, but for the same $$ I could travel further and see more shit that gets my dick hard.
When I saw the Shaky Knees lineup for 2020, I immediately sent it to my fiancé and we agreed if we do a festival in 2020 it will be that.
While we’re going to miss the electronic aspect, there are just too many bands we love.
Portugal. The Man is my all time favorite (seen them 6 times now) and the Strokes are my fiancé’s favorite (she’s never seen them) plus we both love Smashing Pumpkins, Black Keys, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, and a bunch of the undercard.
There are also personal bucket list artists that I’ve been wishing Firefly would get (but never will) like Ty Segall, someone I’ve loved for almost a decade and have been dying to see.
Shaky Knees just blows Firefly out of the water in that regard, and I know Firefly will not come anywhere close to topping that lineup (at least in terms of alt-rock) for me personally.
So after 8 years, it’s goodbye Firefly. I’ll be boarding a plane for the first time in my life to make the trip to Atlanta.
So if you’re considering Firefly, be aware that it might have a decent lineup, but could leave a lot to be desired.

Shaky is a great time. I'd go every year if I could. Eventually, I'll probably have to choose between Firefly and other fests. For the time being I can do FF every year and hit a couple others each year.

Shaky is amazing. The crowd is very similar to firefly 2013/14
I get the critiques but I’ve gone for less than 175 for the 4 years I have been. A pretty great deal imo
I’ve gotten free tickets more than once, still wouldn’t really change my mind at this point. I get plenty of vacation days but I wouldn’t want to waste any of them on a trip I’m not really into. If I want to do drugs and drink in the heat and listen to the artists at Firefly I’ll just go to my parents house and take a radio and some mushrooms out into the field behind their house.
And I mean, you must live relatively close to Dover otherwise I call bullshit. Like $175 just for the ticket maybe, but any amount of travel + food at all would probably come close to that.

I’m getting kind of concerned about who they booked. Names are dwindling quickly. Unless they got Rage or something, this fest could be in serious trouble.

You remember this is Firefly you’re talking about, right?

I had a slimmer of hope that they would turn it around. Maybe bring it back to it’s glory days?

Dude, I'm right there with you. I'm from Detroit, and hadn't really seen live music until I went to Firefly, because a girl I liked was going and I got the invite. Outkast, Imagine Dragons, Weezer, Arctic Monkeys, sold me and was basically all I knew going in. But then I discovered so much music there. Young the Giant, Cage the Elephant, Grouplove, Portugal, Twenty One Pilots... it goes on.
I missed 2015, as that same group wanted to try Bonnaroo, we did that. Had fun, but I personally enjoyed the Firefly lineup and atmosphere better. I guess 2015 was a year to miss, if I was going to miss one. Attended back in 2016, 2017, 2018.
In 2019, Red Frog bowing out and AEG taking over had me concerned. I liked Panic back in 2007, but they weren't at the top of my emo bands. Travis Scott does nothing for me, and I unrightfully hate on Post Malone (he's aight). But after attending 4 years of firefly, Roo in 15, Bunbury in 15/16/19, Beale St in 15/17, Wayhome all 3 years, and a couple other fests the amount of acts at Firefly I had already seen or passed on was insane. And I think anyone going to festivals can say the same.
Louis the Child, Awol, X Ambassadors, Death Cab, Young the Giant, Dashboard, Griz, Walk the Moon... etc. The biggest draw for me would've been Vampire Weekend, who were playing my local Detroit Fest for less than $100.
I'm sad to hear that Firefly is taking a different route (even if their poster art was better than 2018 LOL). Hopefully the lineup goes back and holds true to a similar style of what it was in the past, as I'd love to see a lineup that makes me take time off work, skip my current FF weekend plans, spend the gas, the damn Pennsylvania Turnpike Money, Camping and a Ticket... But I just don't see it happening if it's anything like last years lineup. I miss Red Frog already, so much as I thought the 2018 lineup was stellar, especially in comparison to 2019.
Certainly wasn't expecting them but another quality headliner not even in the cards.
Is Tame Impala honestly the best headliner we could anticipate right now? Let's exclude the pipe dream big names like Bruce or Elton John. If Tame Impala isn't there, I honestly shudder at what's to come. I am almost fully anticipating something like Lizzo - Billie Eilish - J Cole - Cage the Elephant.
Little too pessimistic imo. Realistically the headliners will likely be ____ - Tame - Billie/Lizzo, but there’s no reason to be so low on who the top name might be. Roo got Tool, Coachella got Rage, Boston Calling got both Foos and RHCP, I think you have to have some hope that the big name will be some kind of rock name. Maybe roger waters even.

What other rock bands are available though? A repeat of The Black Keys? Would Firefly poney up for say Guns N Roses or Metallica (if they are available)?

IMO, this festival is already in trouble. It worries me when names are being crossed off left and right. I believe this fest needs strong names after these lineups the past few years, especially at #1. In a perfect world, you hope they got Rage or someone else of that nature, but it’s highly unlikely at this point. If the top line is like what you mentioned, the undercard better be strong.

Foo, PJ, and RHCP are all out. I like The Black Keys, but I don’t think they are enough. I believe Metallica is exclusive to those butt-rock festivals. The Cure is an option, as they are supposed to be touring the US next year. My dream scenario would be Rage because they would probably sell this thing out.
