Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Ok so it's been established this is CRAZY early for Roo to reach their 80K capacity. What do you think it'll mean moving forward as a festival? Pour some more money into infrastructure so it has the facilities as room necessary to bump capacity to 100k? Use as a draw for more rare artists to come play for a fest 'that sells out super early' next year? Use the early $$$ to land a few big names for the next couple years? Nothing at all changes and the execs just pocket it all?
i think the lessons learned are:
1. you don't need a super massive expensive legend name for tickets to sell well 2. you do need an interesting and varied lineup to differentiate bonnaroo from the competition 3. you do need to nurture your hardcore fans (official roo engagement on reddit and social media) 4. while you certainly don't need to be a jamband festival, you do need to maintain some connection to your roots via bookings 5. you do need to book bass music 6. most importantly, in lieu of #1, you need to book tha hot shit (post malone, lizzo)
it's the formula now: first book for the masses, then book acts that will get the final 10-15k tickets sold. the masses buying the tickets don't care if you replace oysterhead, king gizz, and tenacious d with Tory Lanez, Khalid, and Grouplove, but the music nerds do.
EDIT: reading this back it sounds snobby the way i'm using "the masses", please note that isn't my intention. music is for everyone, some of us just like weirder stuff.
I’d like to see a universe where Bonnaroo booked a halfway decent electronic lineup, does that lineup sell out this fast?
I think it does
define "halfway decent". maybe name 5 electronic artists you think are decent and are bookable at bonnaroo?
i ask because maybe the reason i've given up on The Other stage is i can't even imagine a reality wherein bonnaroo books electronic artists that are exciting to me.

It isn't just sales that have been going well, it's a lot of their infrastructure work too.
Superfly being gone has sucked for some sentimental reasons, but they've been able to bring far more in house as far as planning what was once in their court. Being more hands on with campground activations and other things has put them far ahead of schedule in that area as well.
Since they don't have to worry anymore about ticket sales, they're going to be able to put a lot more resources into planning on the ground stuff for us. This year is going to be a huge benchmark for a long while.
They haven't booked a good electronic lineup since 2015, so we don't really have a good control for this.
good point. also while we are at it, is there a united states-based multi-genre festival (besides coachella) that books electronic music that is worth a shit? i can't think of one.
I do wonder if Bonnaroo going this route has been a contributor to EF shedding the second weekend.
totally possible. seems to be a lot of EF talk on the r/bonnaroo, lot of crossover between the fanbases i imagine.

idk I guess... varied?
Get like five moderate named house acts on there or something?
Some dirty bird, brainfeeder if not flying lotus himself
And I know it wouldn’t fit with the “theme” of the other but I really think the wooks wouldn’t be turned away by more uh, critically acclaimed stuff like Burial, Jon Hopkins, Oneohtrix, Tycho, Four Tet... you know, the type of stuff they used to book

Depends whether iii Points qualifies, I guess?
Osheaga isn’t America but I think should count here.

feels like you are leaning more in the direction of booking a few "good" electronic acts for tent shows. i'm all for that. i think if you put an act like jon hopkins or oneohtrix or four tet on The Other the fans there would be bored to tears.
if i was all powerful and could re-theme The Other, i'd basically copy lineups like the Ultra Resistance lineup. it's instantly accessible dance music and i'd be really interested in seeing how a bonnaroo crowd reacts to a Carl Cox set. but i'm not sure if it's economically feasible. certainly not logistically feasible since all those artists are not in the US during the summer.

I was about to say IIIpoints too. Its a great little festival, and a perfect compliment to Roo
Honestly, I'm about the electronic lineup this year. I wouldn't say it's anything groundbreaking, but if they are going to book bass they picked a decent selection.

Which artists do you like?
Taska black, big wild, ganja white knight, lucii, seven lions, subtronics, yaeji, dr fresch, peekaboo, and lsdream are all pretty decent. Definitely won't be seeing all of them but just went through the lineup and listed the ones I like.

Hey guys looking for who the potential late night jam bands that will be rocking until the sun come up would be? I haven't been to roo in about 8 years and always enjoyed the Moe., Umphrey's, STS9, Disco biscuits like jam sets that last until the sun comes up. Who on the Friday and Saturday lineup would be filling that spot for me?

hate to say it but it is unlikely there will be a band playing until the sun comes up. since you last went to bonnaroo they have gotten a lot stricter about bands not playing past their scheduled time.
However the Other stage, which is now almost exclusively electronic bass artists, will go until sunrise.
Ah that's a bummer. I'm sure there will still be something for me. There always is. And worst case I will be rocking the bass music all night. Not that it's a bad thing just not what I remember doing in years past.

honestly excited for you to see the farm again. when i went in 2012 i hadn't been since 2004 and it was a real joy being back. then when i went last year i hadn't been since 2016, not nearly as big a gap but still it's a lot of fun coming back after a period of absence.

I'm 100% fine with them filling the other with wookbass if it boosts ticket sales and the rest of the lineup benefits from those sales. Plenty of people I talked to last year seemed to stay only at the Other for the entire weekend and venture away for major mainstream names like Post Malone or Gambino. It would be cool if they'd extend the tents to go later with the Other and have one with quality more abstract electronic and the other tent(not the Other tent) housing late night jam/Gizz/Primus type acts

Not a chance. Considering Bassnectar brings along at least 8-12,000 people and Tipper probably 3-5, and considering they are worlds ahead musically of much of the stuff people on Inforoo clamor for, it’s not going to work. Day For Night could barely get 20k even with some badass rappers and bands and they actually had some super avant garde acts. There’s always house and techno bars or festivals like Movement and the Christian one in Miami catering to that.
On the flip side, if Bonnaroo went all pop EDM, they probably would still do better.
Also fuck Kid Cudi. I’ve seen him a few times and he’s fine. But he ought to stick to talking about things he has a clue about.
