Sitting in the world’s longest line to get out of a parking garage, so some other thoughts:
-I never listen to hop along but they’re always a lot of fun live. -fiery furnaces were good. Eleanor Friedberger kind of looks a lot like Charlotte Gainsbourg?? -Kelly Lee Owens rules because she can play the dreamiest arpeggiating synth while still head banging like a maniac. I love her. -yaeji was disappointing. There’s more singing, but the songs all suck? There’s special guests, but they come out to rap 4 bars and leave? The dancers are good, but they’re sitting on the floor half the time?? Overall yaeji’s shtick works great with house bangers and not what she’s currently doing. However she did do a new song that was really good. -I have Phoebe fatigue from seeing her twice in six days. Sorry. -my dad was “not particularly impressed by anyone” today but also he saw big thief on his own volition so idk if I would trust him.
In short, today’s true winner was the duck sausage at Maxwell’s.
Think I fucked up skipping Kelly for Animal Collective, but fairly solid first day
Big Thief and black midi were my two highlights, but enjoyed Ela Minus a lot too
Was it boring? Debating skipping AC tonight and just letting Archer of Loaf be the true Hopscotch headliner as they were meant to be.
Purple Bottle as the closer was really fun, but I honestly did find my attention wandering throughout. Probably depends on how excited youd be to hear new songs since that was over half the setlist

Oof. I’ll skip then. I was gonna have to split the set and really just wanna hear the new stuff. Thanks for the heads up.

This was my 4th pitchfork and first in 10 years, which was wild to realize. I really like this little festival, I think it’s done well. They could use about twice as many food option but that’s my only criticism.
After Bonnaroo canceling right as we were pulling out of our driveway and then booking MMJ Alpharetta and that also canceling as we were pulling out of our driveway, this was a really enjoyable day and I’m thankful to be a festival again, and a good one at that
Sets ranked for me:
Black Midi: I’ve seen them before in a small club and fucking loved it but this was something else. The horn player created a huge dynamic and made some of the moments harsh in a way that really worked. The cloud of dust floating up from the pit of people moshing made me really happy to get dirty with strangers and again and I had a fucking blast. As a I walked away I realized how much I needed to see something fucking wild and interesting live and it had been a minute. Even if you know what you’re getting into with Black MIDI, it’s still surprising and it’s still fucking insane. It was a giant show.
Big Thief: I fucked up and didn’t get the closest spot initially, which I knew could be problematic with how intimate Big Thief’s set can be, but it was fucking gorgeous. All the New stuff sounds really good and there was a song in the middle of the set that had a really bright and sunny folky feel (kind of like cattails) that I can’t wait to hear on record. Mary fucked me up and the heavier shit was great.
Animal Collective: knowing that they were going to do mostly new shit ahead of time was valuable for me, I set my expectations low and I was able to enjoy the new stuff. While it was good, hitting people with like 3 really chill new songs in a row is a ballsy move for the main stage of the festival, but they have a history of not really giving a fuck, so I guess I’m not surprised. I will say they really benefitted from their set time. That material did work well with the golden hour sunset slot they got. PURPLE FUCKING BOTTLE was incredible. The show was a bit lopsided with this very pretty and chill set and then purple bottle fucking destroyed. It was probably my favorite single song performance of the day and the crowd loved it, just wished there was more high energy songs throughout the rest of the set
Dehd: Didn’t know what to expect. Started out out kind of slow but man it got really good for the back half. She is a hell of a vocalist. I could see Dehd getting pretty big. The aesthetic works and the songs are fun.
Hop Along: It was descent, was hoping for more, but her voice was on point.
Phoebe Bridgers: Second time in a week seeing Phoebe and it’s just not really for me. I enjoy seeing how many people are into her and how fucking big she’s gotten. She’s very charming and I enjoy her personality (New Dave Grohl?!?) The excitement around her and genuine love from her fans is really cool to witness even if I can’t relate. Seems like she did essentially the same set as last week, same opener and closer and repeated the same bits. That’s always a bummer for me to notice but it’s probably more common than I’d like to know.
Also weather station absolutely ruled last night btw. First of all, their keyboardist got denied entry at the border (!) so they found a last minute replacement in Chicago who gelled with the band really well. But besides that the band is smaller than the one on the record, which I thought could dull the effect of the music especially since it relies on a lot of subtle dynamic changes, but that wasn’t a problem at all: instead the focus shifted a lot more to unique arrangements and solos, which gave the live show a distinctly different vibe from the album and also really livened up a lot of the old Weather Station songs. Not sure if you should skip Caroline for them, but definitely try to catch them on the winter tour.
God the lines for everything were so fucking long. Entrance, long line. Water, long line. Food, long lines. Drinks, longish lines. For some reason the merch lines were long all day too. Hope they get that sorted out for everyone going today.

Merch opened their tent at about 1:30 instead of just being ready when gates opened. So they had a hundred people or so in line by the time they started selling.
