PEEKABOO is Matthew Lucas, originally from metro Detroit and now based in Los Angeles. PEEKABOO is an American Dubstep producer specializing in harder styles of freeform and space bass, both terms coined to describe Swedish Producer, Liquid Stranger’s subgenre of focus. The term “freeform bass” is commonly associated with Liquid Stranger’s Wakaan label which Lucas releases music on. Liquid Stranger put on the best EDM show at Bonnaroo last year in my personal opinion. For the uninitiated, Peekaboo falls within the genre of what is currently termed wook bass. I’ve seen him twice in person, and if you want to bang your head and hear some horror sounds with your bass, you could do much worse. It's not happy music by any stretch. Themes are usually dark, and sounds can be grinding and ominous.
Matthew was raised in a musical family as his dad was a trumpeter for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He learned to play guitar and trumpet and got his start as a multi-instrumentalist later moving toward producing harder styles. He was attending Western Michigan University where he was studying sound engineering specifically in the horror film genre. This may have given rise to some of the screams and sounds of panic interspersed throughout many of his songs.
He’s been around for a little over 3 years but came to prominence in late 2018 with the release of his Maniac EP. The EP was debuted by 4 EDM focused sites (Maniac on UKF, Motion by Thissongslaps, Step It Up by Dancing Astronaut and Work of the Devil by Insomniac). Next project was the Babatunde collaboration with G-Rex which I saw them play at the Wakaan Takeover afterparty for Buku 2019. In October 29, Lucas released a 40-minute mix for Halloween called Hide and Seek on SoundCloud. Lucas said he went around and selected some underground tracks from producers who deserved it as well as some of his own stuff. He did a few other remix projects in early 2019 before releasing 4 song EP Wrecking Ball on Zeds Dead’s Deadbeats label. Later in March, Lucas collaborated with Bassnectar for Reflective #4’s “Illusion.”
Peekabook is currently signed on with Wakaan and Deadbeats labels.

Tour Information – Peekaboo is on tour through the end of March. Beyond that, he will play Sunday at Bonnaroo and then September 26 and possibly the 25th at Red Rocks in support of Big Gigantic’s Rowdytown IX.
