The members of Pond / Tame Impala are close friends. Currently, Jay Watson is the only full time member of both bands. Cam and Julien have contributed to Pond in the past. Kevin produces their albums and is listed as a past member. The lead singer of Pond played with Tame Impala until 2013.
Early Story from Wiki: The origins of the act can be found in the Perth music scene. Parker played in a number of bands, one being the Dee Dee Dums, a rock duo that consisted of Parker (guitar) and Luke Epstein (drums). Tame Impala emerged in 2007 as a Kevin Parker home-recording project in this period and he posted a number of tracks on Myspace. This brought interest from a number of labels and eventually, he signed a worldwide deal with the independent Modular Recordings in July 2008. To transfer these recordings to a live-stage, Parker enlisted the help of Dominic Simper (bass) and Jay Watson (drums) and began playing at some local gigs.

Innerspeaker 2010 Not featured on Metacritic. My guess is it would be in the 82-85 range. Rolling Stone gave it album of the year in 2010. This one is a very easy and enjoyable listen. Maybe the least inventive but it also seemed to kick off a big wave of psych rock in the 2010s.
Lonerism 2012 88 The best Tame Impala album... easily in my opinion.
Currents 2015 84 Not as big on this full album, but it contains a few of the best Tame Impala bangers.
The Slow Rush 2020 81 Still processing this album but I am enjoying it quite a bit so far. I think the live show will be better for it. Even if the songs are setlist filler to you, you'll be dancing to that filler as opposed to just hearing a boring slow pop song from Currents that derails the show.

Suggested Listening If you haven't listened to Tame Impala, I would listen to all of Lonersim, The Slow Rush and Let It Happen, The Less I Know the Better, and Eventually in preparation for the show. To be honest, watching Tame Impala live shows on Youtube doesn't do much for me. I think they sound great when you are there but not really when watching a video of it.
Physical Reaction/Live Show I've seen Tame Impala three times now. Twice at Bonnaroo. In 2013, they put on one of my favorite shows ever in The Other Tent. I'll always remember Tame Impala and Caribou for late afternoon Sunday tent sets that left me allllll fired up about life. I legitimately thought the tent had a chance of collapsing during Half Glass Full of Wine. That thing fucking banged so hard live and it has now been totally discarded. Pre and Post Currents shows are worlds different from each other. In 2016, I saw Tame on the Which directly after LCD Soundsystem. A lot of us did. I think LCD just crushed so hard that Tame's show felt so insignificant afterwards. I was also pretty far back and it was the Which Stage, so those factors don't help. At the end of the day, Lane 8 in the Silent Disco sticks out more to me when I think about Friday 2016... that's not a great note. I was a little down on Tame after this show and Currents in general. Then I saw them again in St. Augustine in 2019. While the setlist was very similar to Bonnaroo 2016, the show was much better. Feels like the light show and energy all around was much better. The performance of Elephant was straight heat.

I added a personal tone to all of the above. Lonerism >>>. At the end of the day, Tame Impala has like 7-8 monumental songs (ranked below) and one monumental album for me. That's the best way to personally to boil down why the band is significant to me.

Second this hard. First time I saw them was right after Currents came out and that was right when they took it off the setlist. It would be ridiculous with the new stage setup

I’m really liking Tomorrow’s Dust and Lost in Yesterday is growing on me. Lost in Yesterday feels like the “The Less I know the Better” of this album if that makes sense, but Lost in Yesterday has grown on me way more than TLIKTB probably ever will. I really enjoy every song on the new album though.
